Scared about my baby choking

Just curious......I was told it was a bad thing to give babies citrus fruits before a year because of the acids. Does anyone know if this is true??

giving baby citrusy foods can give them a urinary tract infection.. ( i said it can give them one, not it will give)

I have kind of the opposite issue. My son is 11 months and he wants nothing to do with the finger foods! He puts fingers, toys, basically anything that is not edible in his mouth, but when I try offering finger foods, he refuses!! I've tried puffs, biter biscuits, short bread biscuits, rolls, pieces of banana. He picks it up, looks at it. He might put it up to his mouth and slightly lick, then he just puts it down or tosses it! I'll try offering it to him again and he pushes it away! He is not a picky eater when it comes to his regular food, so I just don't get it! Any ideas on what I should do?

I give my daughter the Heinz babyfood and one of the fruits she gets is bananas w/ manderine oranges. I would think if Heinze makes a babyfood with oranges in it - it would be pretty safe? I'm not sure - I've heard that you shouldnt give them citrus as well but I give it to her probably once a week.

Thanks, I just remember my pedi saying something about it with my son but I never gave him very much juice that young anyway so I didn't pay much attention to it!! :)

i asked around and u just dont want them to have alot of thecitrus acid because baby could get a diaper rash! like every thing its best in moderation :) hope this helps!

i think its true if ur baby has acid reflux. because it will make it worst, but my boy loves oranges, and evry baby is different :) but i would like to know more if this is true and why they would say not to give them citrus fruits!!

She says on babies being given finger foods to feed themselves 'Many parents worry about babies choking. However, there is good reason to believe that babies are at less risk of choking if they are in control of what goes into their mouth than if they are spoon fed. This is because babies are not capable of intentionally moving food to the back of their throats until after they have developed the ability to chew. And they do not develop the ability to chew until after they have developed the ability to reach out and grab things. The ability to pick up very small things develops later still. Thus, a very young baby cannot easily put himself at risk because he cannot get small pieces of food into his mouth.'

I was really scared of my daughter choking as well. After watching her chew up things like the gerber puffs, MumMums, Farley Cookies, little bits of fruit. I felt much better because I was able to see how well she chews. I am still not giving her too many different finger foods - only because she is not too interested yet.

Another thing that made me feel better is reviewing infant/child choking CPR.
