Should I let him sleep?

My son is 5 weeks old and ive been used to setting an alarm for every 3hrs to wake him to eat. When he was first born he didn't want to wake to eat so i had to wake him. Now that he's 5 weeks and eating plenty, should I let him sleep as long as he wants thru the night? Or do I still need to wake him to eat?

by now your baby should sleep 5 hours or so a night before waking up. I wouldn't get worried about waking him to feed unless he's been asleep 6 1/2 to 7 hours without having eaten. My baby is now 3 months and sleeping through the night - for the most part. Both he and his older brother slept for 5 to 6 hours before waking up to eat when they were around 5 weeks old. your baby will start eating a little more before he falls asleep at night so he can sleep longer. Sleep well! By now you have definantly earned it! :)

i never woke my kids in the night because the way i see it is if they are sleeping and not waking means they are not hungry!

so if he is eaing plenty durring the day and u are having to wake him up to feed him let him sleep and you can get ur sleep aswell. he obviously ha a full belly at nyt so no need to wak him as this may cause problems later with him getting into a routine of waking up in the night!

i never woke any of mine right from day one. if they wanted to sleep 5 hrs i let them. the nurses always told me to wake them but my dr said never wake a sleeping baby. i went with what my dr said and never woke them. when my son was in the childrens hospital they never woke him either. he was 2 wks when he went in and if he slept 5-6 hrs at night they left him. i always figured they'd let me know when their hungry...

He'll let you know when he is hungry. Mine will eat anywhere from 3 to 5 hours. I never woke him to eat, because they are great at letting you now when they are hungry or full!

i had the same thoughts with my daughter... the doctor said every 3 hours but no longer then every 4 hours.... so i was setting my alarm for every 4 hours, and waking her up to feed. I did that religiously for the first month or so, and then I stuck with that routine during the day, but would let her sleep til she woke up at night, and within 2 weeks she was sleeping through the night. I think by making sure you stay on the 'no more then 4 hours' during the day, you can really monitor how many ounces you are feeding throughout the day. This way you can ensure you are feeding him enough every 24 hours, and will help him get on his own schedule faster, making your lives easier. GOOD LUCK!

as long as he's gained his birth weight back then let the little man sleep! Enjoy it while it lasts. with my little one she started to sleep through the night around 6 weeks. after that she had the occasional wake up in the middle of the night. once he gets a bit older then start thinking about getting him on a more regulated feeding schedule, but for now just feed on demand. he's obviously getting what he needs otherwise he'd be letting you know he wants more!! Enjoy your sleep!

He is still very young, dont let him sleep longer than 6 hours at a time because his blood sugar level will drop too much. So wake him up if he has slept for 6 hrs.

If you are concerned that he will sleep for longer than you are comfortable with, set your alarm for something like 5 hours. If your baby wakes up before the alarm goes off, you're most likely needed for a feed. If he doesn't wake up and you're not comfortable with letting him sleep a little longer, give him a feed without totally waking him up (keep it quiet, dark and be very gentle). Over a few nights set the alarm for longer and longer periods until you are comfortable he will wake up when he is hungry. My boy is 6 weeks and I give him a feed before I go to bed and let him wake me if he is hungry overnight. We have been lucky enough to have numerous nights with our son sleeping through.

Hi Stephanie, I had the same problem with my fourth baby girl. I had to set the alarm every 2 to 3 hours to get her to gain back her birth weight after she had problems feeding. As long as he is gaining weight now, I would put him down just before you go to bed and let him sleep until he wakes hungry. You may have to initially give him his daytime feeds a little closer together but its worth it to get more sleep at night. He's bound to let you know if he is hungry. My first baby slept thru at 9 weeks, 2nd at 7 weeks, 3rd at 3 and a half weeks and my last one at 7 weeks. So I found as long as they were getting the recommended feeds per day with a "top up" feed at night (which is give them the last feed of the night, then 30 mins to an hour later give another half feed in a nice quiet way, no nappy changing, just really quiet, soft lights, no talking) this would help them sleep. My CAFHS nurse recommended this to me and it working with all of them. Good luck Stephanie. Terri

After the first week our pedi. told us as long as he's gaining weight it isn't necessary medically for him to eat- although she also said if he wakes and I wanted to nurse him that was fine as well. she also told us never wake a sleeping baby- unless it approached 6 hrs of him sleeping during the day... if you want a definite answer, call the dr- that's what they get paid for!

Everyone is defferent! But i let my little guy sleep, the longer you wait, the more he will be hungry! And the more sleep you get! There is nothing wrong with letting him sleep if he is caught up on his weight!

I remember the first time my son wanted to sleep for a 5 hour stretch, he was a couple weeks old, and I was freaked out wondering if he should sleep that long or if I should wake him up to eat. I was relieved when the doctor said I could let him sleep lol.

I would feed him on demand. as long as he's healthy weight-wise and has a good appetite the rest of the day, let him sleep and enjoy being able to get some rest! we both know you need it. he'll wake you up when he's hungry, believe me! besides, he should be sleeping 4-6 hours continuously at least once a day (that is before the colic starts & then it all goes out of the window with some kids). don't worry about it & get some rest! good luck!

I think as long as he has regained his birthweight (which by 5 weeks he probably has!) and doesn't have trouble gaining weight then yes, let him sleep and get some rest! He'll wake up when he's hungry :)
