I'll be introducing cereal to my almost 5 month old, on Monday. Tomorrow :p My mother suggests that I start it off really watery, or formulay, because that's what I'll be using. I was just wondering what to expect. Like, how will she react to it? And how long before I start introducing new kinds of cereal? I'm starting with Rice cereal, I believe.

I just started my 4 month old on cereal about a week ago. We started it really soupy but he didn't like it. It was to hard to feed it to him - I didn't want it to come out of a bottle. So I use about 1tsp cereal to about 1oz formula. He eats it all. Then I give him 3-5 more oz. of just formula. I do this twice a day. I was told that he shouldn't start a new food within 5-7 days of another. So one new food per week. I think that's too much. I'll probably wait until he is taking more cereal than formula for those two feedings before I introduce any other foods.

Hey, I have a 3 year old and she was a hungry baby so I was told to start her on solids at 4 months. I tried the baby rice, cereals, meals, everything. Everytime I put some in her mouth she gagged on it, she hated it, but I was determined, I was the only one that fed my daughter because I wanted to succeed by myself. Anyway, it took her about 3 weeks to get used to it. My 8 month old son started solids at six months and absolutely LOVED it from the very beginning, no problems at all. Trying to get him to eat the lumpier stuff is a different story. lol. Good luck. :)

My health visitor said it's best to start with either baby rice or baby porridge. She also said that at first they will probably pull funny faces and may only eat two spoons but you can build that up over the week. It's best to mix it with breast/formula milk as the main flavour will be milk which they are already used to. I was told it's best to try one food for 3 days then go onto something else such as mashed carrot etc. This way you can see if anything causes an allergic reaction.
