My son is almost 8 weeks old now, and he's on formula full time. I've been sterilizing all bottles and boiling water before I make his bottles. Just wasn't sure when his immune system will be strong enough that I will be able to stop doing this. Any pointers??

The HV advises not to stop sterilizing bottles and boiling water until baby is 6 months old. My little girl is nearly 7 months old and i stopped sterilizing about 4 weeks ago and she seems fine. I also now give her tap water rather than boiled water. Some people believe that you only need to sterilize bottles the first time you use them so i think its personal preference really. I would however reccomend that you continue to boil the water before preparing the bottle as it will kill any bacteria that forms in the bottle

Thank u all! Yeah, no more bottle sterilization! I will continue to boil water. I've tried to use bottled water (distilled) and he just spit the whole bottle back up! So I'm sticking to good ol' boiled tap water! Thanks again moms!

You're safe. I never sterilized any of my sons bottles, haha. Like...ever. :/

You are definitley safe to stop putting them in boiling water. I only did that the first time I bought new bottles. I've always used warm soapy water. If you constantly sterilize stuff they will never build up their immune system. Immunity is based on exposure. If their not exposed they won't build up that immunity that's exactly what the doctor told my husband and I after our son had surgery.

You're suppose to use sterile water until they are 4 months old. As for the bottles, you can wash them in hot soapy water and rinse well. My daughter is 5 months old and I sterilize her soothers and the bottle nipples once a week in a sterilization bag that goes in the microwave. I use a Brita water filter to make her formula.

I think you are safe to stop boiling them. I just wash my daughter's bottles in warm soapy water now, except if I buy new one's and I always sterilize those first. I do, however, use bottled water still to mix her formula. I do this because it seems like where I live I always find out about boil orders after the fact, so I just buy distilled water and use that. But, no need to keep boiling!
