sucking/biting lower lip... why?

My 4 1/2 month old has recently been making some funny/unusual faces and I'm not sure if it's just a quirk or part of her personality or if it means something. Lately she's been sucking her lower lip and making smacking noises. It doesn't APPEAR to be related to food (because she does it in her stroller when she's not even hungry, but I don't know one way or another. She just makes funny faces with her mouth that she never used to make before.

For some background: Although I don't see any teeth yet, she might be teething. I'm considering starting her on solids in a few weeks because she's doubled her birth weight, she's been rolling over both ways very well for over a month and has been holding her head up like a pro since she was 9 weeks old and she's always trying to grab and eat my food. I have to start with mushed veggies because I don't get enough out when I pump to do the rice cereal mix and she's exclusively breast fed. Also we live in Hawaii and spend a lot of time outside exercising, going on walks, swimming in the ocean, looking at nature etc. Could it have something to do with the heat?

What do you all think? Any of your babies do this? What does it mean?

My son is 11 months now and has been doing that on and off for months. It may be teething, but I think it might also simply be something they do because they can. They're exploring their bodies and figuring out how things work, so she may have just discovered she can make a cool sound and she keeps doing it because it's fun. Good luck!

My son did this when he slowly started teething.. It helped sooth him when he didn't have his pacifier to chew on. So I'd say it's just one of the ways your baby copes with possible teething.

If you see this, leave this form field blank.

She most likely made a smacking noise on accident one day and then figured out how to do so. This is normal she just figured out something new to do. I would say the same thing about sucking and biting her bottom lips as well as the funny faces. My son discovered his hands about 2 weeks ago and has been staring at them, talking to them, etc. A lot of babies do this it is very normal.

My son is 5 months. he has been doing it for a little over a month. Nothing to be worried about. I think its a combo between teething and theyre just figuring out their bodies. :)

Hi Mary,

Yes, my son did this too around that same age. I think it was because he was teething like mad. He stopped doing it about a 1 or 2 later though so I wouldn't worry about it too much.
