Had my postpartum follow up yesterday, I am exclusively bfing...and the doc wrote a prescription for the mini pill for birth control. How effective is it? Will it affect my milk supply? Our family doc already feels my milk supply is low, bc my ds is not gaining enough weight. I don't want to do anything to jeopardize my supply. Any feedback on this would be greatly appreciated... Thank you.

I considered the mini-pill but decided against it bc my life is too crazy to guarantee I would remember to take it at exactly the same time every day. I opted for the IUD instead and have been very pleased with how simple it was and is. I had a problem with low milk supply in the beginning and have to agree with Brooke... make sure YOU are getting the proper nutrition and drinking LOTS of water. If that does not help, consider taking the herbal supplement Fenugreek. It has lots of research data showing it both safe (it is used as a food flavoring additive) and effective. I have been taking it for the last couple months (my son is now 4 months old) and have been pleased. Mainly - don't give up. The more milk is removed from your breasts the more your body makes.

i guess it has the lowest amount of hormones or whatever it is...which is why if your on it you have to make sure to take it around the same time everyday... and wait at least 12 days for it to become affective i was told...just to be safe. This is the only i believe that is ok while bfing

I went on the mini pill with my first 2 kids and no problems, but with my 3rd, not so good. I had breakthrough bleeding, thrush and I become a bitch - hormones I guess. Anyway, I took myself off it straight away and treated the thrush and good as gold.

I did it before with my daughter that is now 2. The mini pill is the only pill that a breastfeeding mom can take. Just remember to take it around the same time every day!

I was on the mini pill for a month and although i didn't have any problems with supply etc I just couldn't remember to take it within the 1 hour window so decided to have the contraceptive injection!

The mimi pill is prescribed to mums for this reason.. it does not affect your milk supply. It does change the taste of the milk but does not harm your baby.. Make sure you eat a lot of healthy meals during the day and keep hydrated as this could be a reason for low milk supply..

I was never told this and being so young (19) I didn't realise that I was risking losing my milk supply which in the long run did happen.. I truely wish I could have breastfed a lot longer but at 10 weeks it vanished. Mine was also due to my daughter having reflux and having a bottle of formula before bed.

Thank you so much everyone for your feedback...the headache thing worries me...I had awful hormonal headaches with this pregnancy. I hope they aren't that bad.

I have reservations with an IUD. It's a foreign object in your body, your body isn't designed for that.

I do keep track of his feedings and diapers...he wasn't gaining enough weight...he was gaining just not as much as the doc wanted him to. So we are working on ways to produce more milk, that is why I am asking about the pill having an affect.

Someone please explain to me the mini pill. At my follow up I was told that I couldn't be on any kind of birth control while breastfeeding.

After reading all this im wondering if thats why ive been getting headaches, ive always gotten really bad migraines that last for days. But this past month ive been getting like minor headaches every other day. they dont last for days but they are always kinda there...

I went on the mini pill and my bf was not affected at all. I still used condoms though b/c we are paranoid but I had to go off of it after 3 months b/c I kept getting brutal migraines. After #2 I now have an IUD (the one with no hormones). Are you tracking how often your baby is feeding? How many wet and soiled diapers? My daughter lost a lot of weight in the hospital and I tracked these things so we could determine if my milk supply was sufficient.

I was on the minipill and it didn't affect my supply, and it was effective for the 2 months that I took it, I stopped because I was getting daily headaches with it.

I had my doctors appointment on July 3rd, he prescribed me the mini pill as well...it is the only pillyou can take while breast feeding i think. It has no affected my supply so far and ive been using it for over a month. I am exclusively breast feeding as well.
