My Ped. Told me that bcuz my Baby girl is exclusively BFing she needed Vitamin D Drops...so I went to the Parmacy...got Poly-Vi-Sol with Iron...Not sure if I was supposed to get with or without Iron so that is my first question...
2nd...after giving the drops to bg her urine smells 10 times worse!! I feel like i have to change her diaper after every lil pee pee cause i cant stand the smell...and her bowel movements are only once a day now...and they are huge!!!! Ruins her clothes each time...is this normal??
She got her vaccinations at this same apt. so she has been cranky cause of the shots so I am also wondering if maybe the vitamins are making her cranky at all...She isn't bottlefed at all anymore so i give her the drops before her 8 am feed...but she won't keep them down...just spits them back up!

Please moms help!! I am considering dcing the drops are they really necessary...she won't die without them...wouldn't she be fine without them until she gets solids in a few months?? HELP!!!

My doctor had me do the drops as well while I was breast feeding and yes it made his pee smell worse. But the Poly-Vi-Sol made the smell worse then the generic kind and my son actually liked the generic brand alot better. When I told my Ped this she said that her little girl was the same way. So maybe change to the generic and see if it's better for your little girl as well. As far as the Iron, My Ped had me get the one with Iron but I also had to take Iron in the end when I was pregnant so that might have had something to do with it. The Iron is what stains though, so I would ask your doctor if she needs the iron. If not you can get rid of the stains by getting the non iron. Also I always gave him his vitamins in the bath so if it dripped or if he spit some up it wouldn't get on anything . Hopes this helps!

They are not necessary. I am giving them to my baby only because she was a preemie. But I never gave them to my first child, and he was breastfed. Never had a problem.

Easy way to get Vitamin D naturally is to expose your baby to sunlight a few minutes a day.

As for the iron, you can have your baby tested after he's 6 months old to see how his iron level is. That way you can only do the drops if needed. Too much iron can make babies constipated. Most breastfed babies do not have iron deficiencies.

I have used both.. I know with my daughter I started using with out iron around 6 months (with talking it over with her doctor) As for the smell it goes along with the Poly-Vi-Sol's.. I know that my daughter has vert strong urine with the Vitamin's.. I am starting to notice that it is starting to get less of a smell, but she will be a year old on March 30, 2010.. As far as the bowel movements I will not be much help there as my daughter has never had normal ones... She was born with Gastroschisis (insides outside her body) Sorry that i am not much help in that department.. I do know that my son who was also BF did this, but never ruined his clothes.. I know that Iron can cause some babies to have bowel movement problems... Sometime Iron can cause babies Gas.. So talk with your doctor and ask if she need the iron or if she can go with out iron... Hope this is helpful.. If you have any question please feel free to ask.. Take care and best wishes..
