What does an umbilical hernia look like?

My daughter's belly button sticks out sometimes, especially when she is fussing or playing. It is purplish in color and sounds squishy when I push on it. It does not bother her at all but I was wondering if this is what one is supposed to look like?

My son had a Hernia which was picked up at his 8 wk check. His belly button stuck out (although we was told he had an innie - but as first child we did not know it shouldn't look like that). It was slightly red but I would not say discoloured. We could feel the Hernia which felt like a hard lump under his belly button. He still has it but dr has said it is small enough now not to worry about.

I would go to your Drs who can diagnose it properly as it may be something totally different.

My son had this when he was 2 months old. What happens is the umbilical cord fills back up with blood and thats why its turning purple and squishy. Don't play with it, treat it like she's a newborn again; turn the diaper down like a cuff in the front, watch for lots of blood/puss oozzing out of it, don't let it stay too wet. My doctor had me applying rubbing alchohol to dry it out 4 times a day. And that made the blood dry up and the cord went back in. I would talk to your doctor. My friends daughter who is 4 now needs surgery because of hers protruding so much. It is nothing to worry about but something to keep an eye on.

I actually have one myself from my pregnancy and my does the same thing. It doesnt look the way you describe your childs but dont mess with it and dont try to push it back in if it is sticking out and dont put a quarter on it with tape lol....I know it sounds weird but I had like 50 old women tell me to do it to mine and it doesnt heal it lol.

actually alot of toddlers resolves without medical intervention:)

Google it, you will find lots of pictures.

I would suggest if you believe it is a hernia to take her into the doctor for him/her to check right away. Hernia's can become dangerous if they erupt.

My hubby had 2 inguinal hernias before. They look like small golf balls when they would come out, they never were discolored though. He was in A LOT of pain when they would come out. He had surgery to fix them though, so no longer has the problem.
