I think mega blocks are a great toy that grows with a child.

my son will be 15 months at christmas and we got him a projector reader so we can lay in bed with the curtains closed and "read" his stories on the wall/ceiling...we also picked him up a toddler guitar because he loves trying to use daddy's guitar and a nylon pop up tunnel.

my daughter is 16 months and loves these toys:
-plush chair
-talking elmo stuffed animal
-toy piano
-blocks
-crayons and paper
-plastic blow up lion that bounces back after being hit
-toy cars
these are all inexpensive and she's getting the most use out of them.

My son will be about 15 1/2 months by Christmas. We bought him the Leapfrog Jr. Tag (he loves to read books so we're going to see how he does with it). We also got him bath toys, a foam kids couch, and color wonder sound studio (it's for 3+ but he only colors supervised anyway and loves to color). His family & friends are getting him a toy vaccum (he loves to clean), legos for toddlers, coloring books, toddler toy cars, things like that. My son loves blocks too. The toys he's getting for Christmas range in age mostly from 18-24 months old on the boxes. With an exception to a few supervised only toys that are for 3 and up.
