I have been breastfeeding my son for 3 months now. I have stopped taking the prenatal vitamins because the make me have nausea. I recently purchased vitamins but did not realize they were not regular vitamin, but were for active metabolisms. Is this safe to take? And what about aspirin, headache meds? I don't want to take anything that may be harmful to my son.

I take a low dose aspirin daily and my doctors say that I can nurse my baby 12 hours after I take my aspirin. The aspirin is at it's peak 1-2 hours after taking. Seven hours after taking aspirin, the medication is half out of your system. My doctors told me not to nurse if my baby has any symptom of being sick. It's when a baby/ child has a viral infection and takes aspirin or ingest's aspirin through mothers milk that there presents a problem. Hope this helps.

The vitamin is probably fine. Aspirin is generally a no-no, but in small sporadic doses can be okay. These are my two favorite websites for checking medications:

Definitely check with a lactation consultant or LLL leader. Most doctors unfortunately don't have all the correct information about medications and breastfeeding, and will just tell you to not take anything.

Angel,

I agree with Sara, always ask your doctor about any medications. Make sure you tell him/her you are concerned, sometimes they can give you an easier medication that won't affect your baby as much.

For vitamins, try to pick something that's gentle (to avoid nausea). I just took regular prenatals, but my sister had a sensitive stomach so she took an all-natural vitamin shake (it had way more vital nutrients than my little prenatals & the chocolate one was really easy on her stomach). It's marketed as a "weight-loss" shake, but really it just is a all-natrual vitamin shake. (Weight-loss happens when you eat natural, healthy, foods)

Always check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking medications. Here's a list of AAP approved meds to take while breastfeeding. A lactation consultant will also have access to information on medicines that are safe while breastfeeding. I don't know about the vitamin. I'm still taking my prenatal vitamin. I wouldn't take aspirin, but tylenol and ibuprofen are ok while breastfeeding. Here's the list:
