My daughter's was goowy too after it fell off and red around it but it was slightly infected. The doctor had me put hydrogenperoxide on it for 2 days and that cleared it up and now it healed nicely.

Yeah same thing happened when our son's chord feel off. Well I think I accidentally knocked it off a bit prematurely (I was holding him in just a diaper and it got caught on my shirt). It bled and looked awfully raw and gooey. The hospital had us come in and they put silver nitrate (is that right?) or something on it and it healed up quickly after that. We kept him out of the bath for another week until it truly healed.

My sons was all gooey when it fell off. It also had weird smell, and bled a little (not a lot). My ped said that it was okay so long as the gooey stuff didn't last more than 2 days.

when my baby finaly lost her cord it wasn't "gooy". but it took her until she was 3 months old for it to fall off.so there wasn't goo or blood

My baby's cord fell off way too soon (after 4 days). It took longer for the area to heal, so, to keep it from getting infected I cleaned the area 2-3 times a day (at diaper changing time) with rubbing alcohol and baby q-tips. She's just fine now!

yeah thats normal sometimes it smell a little bit too but if it gets really smelly it might be infected but it is gooey then it will scab over and eventually fall off to leave a nice belly button!!

just keep putting alcohol on it and that will dry the gooey stuff out. As long as the goo isn't flowing blood, you should be OK, IMO, but if it worries you, of course....call the dr.
what I found strange with both kids is that after they got bigger, like about a year old, I'd be washing them or something and find more cord crud in their belly button. just one final bunch of dried out skin.
