Our daughter slept in a bassinet until about 3-4 months and then went straight to her crib and has been there since. She is now 13 months and we have never had a problem with her staying in it. There have been, of course, a few bad nights in which she ended up in the bed with us but we have always put her back in her crib the next night.
As far as the cereal in the bottle, every mom is different and has her own style of parenting. Personally, I started putting cereal in my daughter's bottle at 6 weeks. She never had an issue with it. The doctor even asked if we were. It's your own decision - only you know what's best for your child.

Usually when you are ready or when they are too big for the bassinet. Which ever comes first. You can do it from birth though. I was just a little to paranoid to so I kept him close to me lol

my daughter is 11 weeks and I started her in crib at 6 weeks because she was already too big for her bassinet.

My son has been is his crib since we brought him home, so 1 day old... he refused to sleep in our room because daddy snores!!! LOL, i just bought really good monitors and i can hear him breath, so its comforting. he just started cereal, around 3.5 months off a spoon and likes it, he really loves apples and bananas. :D

I moved my daughter to the crib in her own room when she was 2 months. I just started cereal (she's four months old). I've heard of people putting cereal in the bottle but I won't be one to do that. My belief is she needs to learn the mechanism of moving the food to the back of her mouth and swallowing, so until she learns this, she will continue practicing with cereal by spoon and then we can move onto baby foods. Technically, a baby can get all it's nutrients from breast milk until 6 months of age.

My mother gave me some information about me when I was an infant. Apparently, I was eating cereal at two months, fruit and vegetables by 3 and meats by 4 months. I wonder how much of that was actually getting to my stomach. All of this was prescribed by my pediatrician. How things have changed :)

Hi, im a first time mum and was looking for a bit of advice. I would really like a crib in our bedroom instead of a moses basket, i would like to breastfeed if i can so i am not in any rush to move baby to nursery. I want to know if i still need a moses basket to use down stairs in the day time rather than leaving new baby upstairs alone? Hope that makes sense and someone can give some advice. Thanks.x

I wouldn't put cereal in the bottle unless your pediatrician says too.
Our son constantly spit up so I think we started adding cereal to his formula bottles before he was a month old, and only did because our pediatrician said to do so to help him keep it down.
Our daughter is almost 6 weeks old, bf/formula supplemented and we add cereal to her form bottles because she has the same problem but I add less than recommended.

I know people who put like twice the cereal, and baby food to make the baby sleep all night. Not right.

I started cereal at about 3 mnths with my son and I put it in his bottle he did just fine. He also ate really good off a spoon. Hes now almost 5mnths gets rice cereal baby fruit and baby vegetables through out the day and is perfectly fine. As for the bassinet my son was out of it at 2 mnths because he started rolling over in it so he slept in the bassinet part of his playpen till about 3 weeks ago and he is now sleeping in his crib and does really good.

We started our little guy in his crib at 2 months as he outgrew his bassinet. We started cereal at around 4-5 months from a spoon though.

I can't really remember, I put my daughter in when she was too long for her bassinet. This was around 4 months. I had the cot in my room until she started keeping me up at night, which was around 6 months. She had been sleeping through from 8 weeks, which was lucky for me! I tried rice cereal at 4 months from a bowl with a spoon, I never used a bottle coz it just got stuck and its not recommended and she loved it, she was on permanent solids 3 times a day with bottles in between from 6 months.

Yeah, my son is 2 1/2 months old and he is sleeping in the bassinet still. It's too cold for some reason in his room where the crib is so for now he stays in our room. As for the cereal, I tried it but it didn't work for me. But I think I'm going to wait for his 3 month mark so I can try again.

I put my son in his crib right from birth. I tried using the basinet but he didnt like it. I also don't think putting cereal in a botle is good. I started spoon feeding my son cereal at 3 and a half months.

I just started putting my son in his crib this week. He is a little over three months. Unless he doesn't feel good he loves sleeping in his own room in his crib. Sometimes he still sleeps in his swing if he feels real gassy. For his morning nap he co sleeps with me. It is a bit of everything. I let him sleep where he is comfortable and can sleep the longest. Rice cereal I am going to try feeding him from a spoon at 4 months and see how he does.

Baby #1 - in our room in a bassinet for 4 weeks (at which point I was about crazy from sleep deprivation! :)), cereal on a spoon at 4 months per pediatrician instructions. She slept in her crib for naps during the day from day 1. Baby #2 - in her crib in her room from the day we got home from the hospital. Slept SOOO much better!! Same thing with the cereal, we never put it in a bottle, the doctor never recommended it for us.

My son will be 3 months on monday. He still sleeps in his bassinet and i put him in his crib for naps. He did stay one whole night in his crib with a feeding in the night and went back down perfectly, however I haven't been able to do it again just yet. One because he doesnt seem to care for it and two I haven't adjusted with him being in there by himself. So nap times for now.
We put cereal in his bottle and have done so for weeks now. Our pediatrician suggested we do so because he spits up a little more than mommy likes.

I was a fast mover into the crib - I moved my daughter in at 3 months. I was able to get a better night's sleep with her NOT right next to me. I keep the monitor on voice recognition (not that it matters, I still hear her through the wall) and when she is a restless sleeper, I can still get some sleep!

I tried the cereal in the bottle - it didn't work and it is not really recommended. You can give him some solid food mixed with rice cereal before bed along with a bottle.

Good Luck!

You can put your child in a crib at any stage, even as a newborn. According to Consumer Reports, it's the safest place for a baby to sleep because of all the regulations and standards set for cribs. With that said, I had a C-section so I couldn't reach into the crib to retrieve my newborn by myself so we bought a bassinet. I also coslept with him on occasion because I had to breastfeed him so often in the beginning so it was just easier. I started using the crib when my son was about 2 months old because I could finally lean over the rail. It also made me nervous that he kept rolling to his side and pressing his face against the side of the bassinet. Anyway, your bassinet should have a weight limit and/or an age limit guideline in the instruction manual. Good luck with your decision!

i put my son in his crib when he was about three months. I waited until he was sleeping through the night (until about 5 am) so i wouldn't have to get up and go to the nursery in the middle of the night. The first night or two he woke up a couple of times, but after that he adjusted to his crib and did well.
As for cereal in a bottle. my doctor told me just to wait and give it too him on a spoon, and we started that about 4 months.

At my daughter's four month doctor visit, we were told that indications for starting solids are when the baby doubles her birth weight and/or wakes in the middle of the night for a feeding. Currently she is 15lbs 10oz, at birth she was 8lbs 5oz and she sleeps through the night, so I have no intentions of starting cereal until both requirements are met or she is 6 months old.

Also, she is still in the bassinet, in our room. I am ready to move her to her crib, but daddy wants to wait until she can fully roll herself over back and front. So in the mean time, she will take her naps in her crib to get used to it.

Hi,

We have a large family and space is limited here so.. our daughter went into her cot straight from hospital. We did use a moses basket with our oldest and second child but with 5 kids and one on the way we just dont have the space for everything in our home.
As for putting things in the bottle - I personally wouldnt do it as there are other risks involved with that but it is your child and you need to make the call on what is best for your baby.

Gd Luck

my son is almost 3 months and still in a bassinet. when he's too big we'll move to the crib. he has naps in his crib during the day. as for the cereal, it seems that depending on where you are from you get different advice. i am BF so i rarely use bottles of pumped milk unless we have a baby sitter. i am not planning on starting solids until 6 months as this is now the recommended age.

Thanks for posting this Emily as I am also trying to get my lil one onto a cot. She is outgrowing her bassinet very quickly and I don't think I am ready for her to sleep alone in her nursery so I am going to get a port a cot thanks to the recommendations on this thread!

my son is 7 months i put him in his pack in play at the bottom of my bed tried crib for three nights didnt work i guess it was to early for him but im gonna try again soon. i think it depends on the baby and mom. the ceral i feed my baby cereal at 1 month he took to it for awhile till bout 3 months then i started 1st stage baby food once a day at bed time with a bottle they say wait till 6 months for baby food and 4 months for cereal but if its not hurting the baby and they can hold it down give it to the baby milk dont feel them up they need something else and juice give that baby a bottle of juice a day it will keep your baby regulated and your baby will love it mix it half water half juice. im a first time mom too but i look up things on the net and ive had alittle experiance helping out with my bro and sister when they were born but that was like ten years ago...lol but you never loose the touch...lol

Meridith, can I ask why you put cereal in her bottle at 6 weeks? Seems like it's almost standard practise in the US?

I think our son slept in the bassinet next to our bed until 3 months, then in the pack n play until almost 6 months. It was so much easier in the beginning because he was waking up so often at night, but it eventually got to the point where we were just waking each other up. I think because of that he had no problems switching to his crib; he started sleeping longer stretches and soon through the night. As for cereal in bottles, I've read that's not a good idea. We breastfed so no experience there!

I put my Daughter in her crib the night she came home :)
My doctor said its safe to put a little, like a teaspoon of cereal in the bottle at 6 months, but I find that silly because at 6 months just put it on a darn spoon!!

I put my daughter in her crib from 3-4 weeks, when my hubby went back to work and i wanted him to have a decent night sleep, so i didnt really want her in our room. As for the cereal in bottles i agree 100% with Dana, for me its a big no, no. I dont think they should have cereal until they are ready to eat it off a spoon. Good luck :)

[deleted account]

I just wanted to point out that there's a lot of people that co-sleep with their children and don't use a crib! Although I used to bring my daughter in once in a while while I was breastfeeding and still do on occasion I don't think I could ever exclusively co-sleep!

I started putting my son is his crib to sleep at 3 months old...its been 2 weeks now and so far so good...main reason was that he was starting to outgrow his bassinet...but I know some people wait longer or shorter, it depends on your personal comfort level...I have friends that waited untill 5 months and others that put the baby in the crib from day 1.

I found what helped me to get my son used to his crib, is to put him there for naps during the day for a couple of weeks and then I started sleeping him in the crib at night.

[deleted account]

I used a bassinette also until about 4 months I think.....my daughter's now 18 months and LOVES her crib! Thank goodness! I know a lot of mother's that put baby in the crib from day one home from the hospital......

Cereal in bottles is a big NO NO for me! Unless ur specifically instructed by a doctor for a valid medical reason I don't agree with it! That bein said ur entitled to do whatever you think is right for ur child.....

GOOD LUCK!
