i held my little boy's first birthday party at home at the end of january ..

we just invited family (there's quite a lot of us so there wasn't any point inviting friends as it would have been overcrowded .. i have 7 brothers and sisters sooo.)

me and his daddy took him out on his actual birthday to a sea life centre though.

We are planning just as we did for our older son's first bday. We are "borrowing" a room at our church and orienting the party for the wide age range of family and friends. We will have "centers" set up using toys we already have and it will be a laid back time of fellowship! We do have a theme so we can coordinate cake and plates etc, but make it generic, our older son's was jungle. We do concentrate on a big first bday bash that everyone one can talk about and remember even if it is just through pictures and video, but that is because after the first bday we have family parties until they enter school and have friends to invite etc. As far as places like bounce houses, party places etc. they do not seem to work as well to accomidate the large age range you are bound to have if you are inviting much family. Parks are nice too, but weather dependant of course!

What Sharon said. I'm planning to have some family and friends at home out in the garden. Themes and big ideas are going to wait until he's old enough to take more notice! I'm going to bake a sugar free cake so he can have a slice.
