They are exercising their facial muscles. I used to love watching my son and would stay awake all night staring at him making different faces. I was absolutely shattered but i'm so glad i did it because i was able to see his first ever smile. Babies do dream too, maybe not like you and i but they do dream. They take in everything that has happened during the day (or since their last nap) and mull over it in their tiny little brains. They learn so much when they are asleep just by going over everything that has happened during the day. I don't think it is wind. I put Thomas to bed once with wind and he did smile but it was a different one to the one's he had before and it was also accompanied with a little whimpering. Watching babies sleep is the most beautiful and precious thing (next to breastfeeding) and it's a wonder any of us Mummies get any sleep with such a gorgeous little bundle to stare at all night lol xx

I've heard it's gas, but I don't think so. I think they're dreaming. My 3 week old daughter smiles, frowns, and makes scared and disgusted looking faces in her sleep. I think she's either dreaming or practicing, like more reflexes to get her face ready. I think it's more of dreaming though. Me and my fiance had a disagreement because i said i think she's dreaming and he said she doesn't have anything to dream about that she doesnt think. It might sound crazy, but i believe in reincarnation and i wonder if babies dream about past lives.

i know! it's so cute to watch them sleeping. of course it's because they're dreaming. mine smiled only in his sleep at first. then slowly most of the time when he was awake. and the same thing with laughing. my baby used to only laugh in his sleep, now he does it all the time both awake and sleep, it's so sweet!

I use to think it was gas as thats what all the books will tell you, but now Im not so sure. Sometimes my son coos when he does it too so I think he is dreaming. Either way its adorable. And when you have a little boy with colic, even it it is gas, its awesome! I just dont like when he is sleeping and suddenly gasps for air then goes back to sleeping happily. My heart skips a beat!
