Will this economy ever get better? I'm a single mom and I can't find a job anywhere!

Hey moms,

I’m wondering if any moms have advice on employment. I’m from Chicago and I just feel like things have been so bad recently. Before I gave birth to my daughter in May I was working part time doing administrative work. I’m now going to be graduating this December with a Bachelor in criminal justice and I just can’t seem to find work anywhere. Here in Chicago I believe the unemployment rate is a little under 10%. This economy is really starting to scare me as I just gave birth to my daughter and her father doesn’t help me at all. It’s beginning to get to the point where I’m going to file for support in court but the money to hire a lawyer is so tight and not worth what he will even be paying me based on his income.

I’m just starting to get so down about this job situation. I know I’m not unemployable because I’ve been hired and worked for a few decent companies in the past. I left most of my other jobs because of school and school is not paying off! Any moms in Chicago have any advice about jobs or finding employment. I feel like even after having my degree in a few months, like so many other recent college grads I won’t find any job. I’m starting to think I should go back to school for nursing once I graduate, but I don’t want to spend any more time away from my baby as it is and also hear the nursing shortage is untrue and jobs prospects are very bleak in that area as well. My savings are dwindling and will not last forever. I would like to send my child to a catholic school one day but I’m not just getting so down thinking about everything I can’t provide for her if things don’t get better. Help!

I'm not in Chicago, but the unemployment rate in my area is about the same.

I highly suggest going to worksource. You should even be able to find help from them online.

This time of year is actually ideal for finding work in lower positions. While you search for a career in your chosen field and degree look for retail in the mean time. You won't get paid well, but it is better than no job. With so many people leaving their summer jobs for school, now is the time to look.

If you see this, leave this form field blank.
