I'm looking for a natural remedy for cradle cap. I know it's harmless and everything, but it's so annoying. I've tried massaging his head with olive oil and jojoba oil, leaving it, and brushing off the scales, but it just came back. Anyone heard of anything that really works?

Amanda--I got mine at the local "health food" store. I would imagine it would be available in most areas. I guess Jojoba oil is one of the most similar to our own body chemistry, which is why it's supposed to work so well.

I used calendula n honey lotion from daisy blue naturals. It worked for me. If you need help finding it, let me know.

I have the same problem as you, Rebecca. I've tried olive oil with no long term success. Is Jojoba oil readily available in most chain stores?

All has been well since we switched to jojoba oil instead of olive oil. Apparently olive oil can actually make it spread like a fungus.

My sisters and I have all had babies with cradle cap, and one of our midwives told us it was a deficiency of Biotin. If it does come back, continue combing it out with oil, but also start a Biotin supplement (it comes in capsules) and also look for a liquid b-vitamin supplement. It worked for 3 babies in my family.

Mine hasn't gotten cradle cap yet, just some patches of dry skin on her scalp. But everytime I give her a bath I comb her hair thoroughly to get the flakes off. I am not sure if this has prevented it or not, but I have done it since she was born.

The most common allergies that can cause a reaction like this would be dairy or wheat .. It could be anything, but I would first see if his cradle cap comes back and then really start thinking about the best way for you to eliminate these things from your diet and see if that works. Its the nature of the beast when it comes to breast feeding..Do keep in mind to watch for any ways an allergy could be manifesting in other ways it could be an iron clad indicator..Either way your doing a great job, let me know if you need more info on how to implement an elimination diet! All the best to you!

Okay, we tried the oil and it all came off. Combs work better than brushes... you'd think I would have thought of that before. Oh well, at any rate, it's off. We'll see if it comes back. I think Lindsey's right, it might be a food allergy.

I recommend any oil w/o mineral oil or petrolatum also ponder the possibility of a food allergy for really persistent cases...You can try an elimination diet yourself and see if your baby's noggin improves! Best of luck.

i was recommended to do the same (olive oil and combing out the flakes/scales) and it worked, but only after trying on two separate occasions. i know, it is harmless but i couldn't stand to leave it either! :)

My midwife told me she would rub olive oil on her son's head and then use a comb and comb it off. My daughter never had cradle cap that badly, but when she had it, I tried the olive oil trick and it came right off and never came back. Hope that helps!
