I have tattoos from the elbow up, some of which are stick-and-pokes (yeah, I'm an old punk). I walk around in band t-shirts with my preggy-belly sticking out, and get plenty of dirty looks. It doesn't bother me much, though.
I don't think you have to clean up and start shopping at the Gap just because you have a kid.

I have nineteen tattoos, although some have morphed into each other, on my shoulder blades, lower back, full sleeve on my right arm, thighs, calves , ankles and feet. Four piercings in each ear, plus tragus, eyebrow, monroe on my left upper lip, two nose rings, left nipple and belly button...you can imagine the 'looks' I get out shopping and picking up my son from school, and by the way Im a barefoot mummy so I never have any shoes on my feet, that really gets the tongues wagging! I dont give a shit!

I got the looks cause I live in a small town. Now they're all used to it and asking me what's next lol. I have my nose, belly button, and ears (5 in one, 3 in the other) pierced. I have a daisy chain on my left wrist, a pentagram with filligree on my right inner arm, daisy on right ankle, kids names rip mom with flowers and ivy on left leg, and greek words on my left shoulder. :)

I get plenty of funny looks, and some really inapropriate comments of other moms and health professionals. When I was in hospital having my son the staff all referef to me as 'the tattood lady'.
Can't say it really bothers me, I get enough positive attention to balance it out. The only down side to being a heavily tattood mom is not being able to find others like me!

i have red and pink hair, 1 tattoo, and 19 piercings. 14 in my ears, belly button, my toungue and other unmentionables hehe:D. My son normally is 6, and sports a mohawk, sometimes even coloured.
Sometimes people look at me funny because his hair is green, or mine is red, or the 00g earnings.
I say let them stare, or make funny comments, its not my care that they lead sheltered lives. all you can do is to stand tall and be proud of who you are.

I have several tattoos and piercings and I when I first started volunteering at my daughter's school I got no respect from anyone. But after volunteering as room mom being there for every school event I can, I feel I have proven to most of those ignorant women that just because I look different than them makes me no less of a mother than they are. Now they treat me like anyone else, it feels good.

I get different responses where ever I go. My 2 yr old loves all my tats but doesnt understand since I'm the only one he sees with them. my spouse has none although he has thought about getting one but has mixed feelings on it. More so does he now since I am working on my sixth which will be the largest. Its a garland of roses extending from my left shoulder across my back and down my right side back to my left ending on my thigh with a lilac for my dad. Im very excited about getting out of the army soon so I can do what I want which also scares my spouse bc he knows I will probably go crazy since the first thing I want is my nose pierced and to dye my hair. I dont care what others think as long as i can live with my choices and it doesnt hurt my family. we all need to be ourselves and if pink hair does it for you then why not.

When people get tattoos it is something that resembles part of their personalities and things in their lives that they want to remember. Well, that is my opinion.

I only have a few tattoos and some facial piercings but what I have gets the most attention. Especially the stars tattooed on my neck and my Marilyn which I have a little larger piece of jewelry in. I've had to explain why I get tattoos and piercings more than once and get looked at like I have 3 eyes by others when I'm out with my kids. I just had a daughter in August and I have a 14 year old son but when I was pregnant with both even with the age difference I noticed people still giving me very condescending looks. I do look younger than what I am but I am an experienced and outgoing mom and have made the choice to look like I do but to also teach both of my kids that no matter what it is you do to yourself it's perfectly fine to look different than anybody else. Too many people have a preconceived notion that anyone that has any kind of mods isn't the type of person that is fit to be a parent and that you are trash if you do decide to look different. I just go about my business when I see people looking or should I say gawking and am just as proud as I can be that my son & daughter will know that their mom isn't one to worry about what anybody else thinks!

I have 5 tattoos and one of them has a penis on it. lol I'm pagan and I have the greek god Pan tattooed on my left arm with his penis out(in my opinion goats don't wear pants :P). He's a start of a sleeve that I was going to get with Selene(the moon goddess). The other arm is dedicated to the zodiac of people that mean a lot to me in my life. So far I have my daughters zodiac with her name and birth date. I have on my back below the neck line a tat that says "Perfectly Imperfect". After that I have a full back piece of faery wings and on the lower back I have the "OM" symbol.
I do cover up Pan's lower part just to be courteous of the other parents. I also have a mohawk and a 10g septum. What also didn't help for the first year was that my daughter has ADHD and ODD. So the looks that I would get were beyond ridiculous. Especially from teachers when my daughter would wear my pentacle necklace. She wanted to wear it when she was going through her separation anxiety to feel closer to get mom. ♥ I would do anything for my little fire faery. Just because we're different, doesn't mean that we don't bend over backwards for our kids. Alternative parents love they're kids just as much as any other "normal" parent would for they're kids.

Its funny that you mention this because I was just complaining about being judged at in my neighborhood. I live in a white bread upper/middle class neighborhood. The majority of the people that live here look the part but here I am with my crappy pink car, a single young mom with full sleves. I wasn't getting looks when I had to borrow my dads SUV and it was cold so my arms were covered but as soon as I drove up in my car and it was warm enough to show my arms the people who use to talk to me started ignoring me. Its really frustrating. I've learned that I just need to stay true to who I am and not get caught up in there judgement even if I didn't look "alternitive" I'm sure those same women would find something else about me they didn't like who in the long run WHO CARES:)

I help with the 7 year olds at my sons school and the kids love my tattoos and ask when I am getting more, they give them names, I have Fawkes the phoenix (from Harry Potter) and Draco the Dragon. These kids are not going to grow up prejudiced.
My in laws hate them and have threatened to report me to social services for child abuse if my kids get any. I said they can have what they like as long as they are legally adults and are sure about what they want.

It was like because of the way i looked out there I had to be a bad mother. I get more looks though for my hair than for my tattoos as they are seen less and the teal hair tends to draw attention.

....One of our ideals as parents was to raise a little human being who was color blind and lacked harsh unfair judgment of strangers based on their appearance. How we plan on accomplishing this was by raising and surrounding him with a colorful variety of people, tattooed and not.
Open minds. Open hearts. Open arms. That's out policy.
Jinni! I love your quote! Can I steal it for my scrapbook? ;o) I am a white woman with one mixed child (B&W), one white child, and a spanish boyfriend to boot. I have 4 tats, one on my upper arm, and one on each shoulder in the back, which can all be seen if I wear a tank top. The fourth is a tribal on my lower back. No piercings other than "normal" earrings - I have 6 of them. My boys both play elite level soccer, so I always get the looks from the "real soccer moms," but when they get past that, I'm just like the rest of them, as we all are. I too teach my children that love has no color and no judgment.
Good for you and for all of us who are comfortable with being ourselves, and raising our children to be as well!

Wow. I'm glad I'm not the only one... I have about 13 tattoos, I think. Gotten work done so many times, it's getting had to keep track, plus they sort of blend together once you start to concentrate on one area. The one's I'm most proud of are my October scene and full moon, I got done for my Oct. born son, I still love my skull and cross bones with a bow, (my rebellion against turning 22, haha!), I have a black widow and web, a rose on my elbow, (Ouch!) and my most infamous tattoo is my penis monster. I accepted that I was becoming a "heavily tattooed" person, so I bite the bullet and got a really crazy one. It is the best party trick ever, but most women think I am complete trash for getting it. I love it so much that I got the words "high class white trash" tattooed above it. I have 5 other tattoos that are smaller as well. Can't wait to give birth so I can go get some more! I have a second sleeve to finish!

Hear Hear!! :) I have a Kanji on the back of my neck that means grace /blessings of God and a black sun on my back. I want to get more, but finances prevent that for the time being. I have a regular ol' nose ring and the front of my hair around my face is purple. My hair is long in front and boy cut in the back. I get some strange looks, especially when I'm with the kids.... but for the most part, I have had countless people come up to me to tell me they love my hair and what's funny is that a LOT of them are mid 50's and older men and women! I have never hidden my tattoos except from my parents when I first got them, lol. But the kids are totally cool with them and my hair and my daughter likes to try to put my nose ring in for me, LOL.

Hi all,
I'm new here and already disgusted by the way all of you have been treated.
Being treated in such a manner that would cause outrage and huge lawsuits due to the colour of someones skin, but seeing as it is colour by tattoo and not by race it gets over looked and people are free to judge and discriminate with out any right or reason.
I only have my ears pierced, nothing special there, but I have 5 tattoos on my back (phantom of the opera mask and rose on left shoulder, 3 tribal starsigns top of my back, one of which is for my little boy, and a gothic looking fairy in the middle) I have 1 on the inside of my right wrist (symbol for love life and loyalty which I got 4 days ago with my sis) and soon I will have a triquerta on the inside of my left wrist and pentagram on the back of my neck.
All my tattoos have meaning to me, and my son loves to look at them, and trace their outlline with his fingers. Although he is only 3 (almost 4), I still like his input to my ink, and I asked him before the last one if he likes mummy's tattoos and if he thought that I should get another, and with a big cheesy grin on his face he said yes!! But he doesn't want one just yet, when he gets "big and strong".
I have friends who are fellow mums tattooed and not, we are all open minded and love eachother for WHO we are NOT what we LOOK like. And our children and are not the ones pointing and whispering to each other when they see someone with different colour, tattoos or piercings, in fact our children are the ones going to talk to these people (with mummy holding hands) to say that they like their hair and they think that mummy/daddy should do the same.
People need to open there eyes and see that we are no different to anyone else, we like to use our bodies as canvases and a way of expression.
Instead of trying to keep up with the "jones'", we live for who we are and what we believe in.
And fast cars, big houses and flashing all your cash is not what living is about.
I live for my son and to make him happy and if anyone thinks I can't do that due to my tattoos then they can come and say it to my face and ask my boy what he thinks.
To all the inked, pierced, branded, dread-locked and fantastic alternative mummys and daddys out there, no matter where you are from.......................... rock on and give your kids the best out look in life, an open one!!

WOW Kat, that is horrible!
My mother and I have just taken to telling the people who shake their heads at us (us being me, my brother and my partner) not to be so judgmental. It's just hair (we all had dreads until recently), or skin (abit like colour, really!) or jewellery.
I do remember though, before I had my daughter, I worked in a fruit shop with my dreads and visible tattoos and piercings and I often got told by customers that they would prefer to be served by someone who was 'abit cleaner'. I had to laugh then. It was like, you obviously have NO idea about having dreads/tattoos/piercings!
I think, if someone had of told me that MY KIND wasnt welcome in there store, I would have said 'And WHAT KIND am I?? Please enlighten me.' and then I probably would have proceeded to give them a lecture on how the scum of the earth are judgmental and narrowminded people like themselves.

My S/O and I get looks all the time, though I am the pierced tattoo'd one he's got incredibly long hair. Down here in the south we get lots of looks, people shaking their heads, or people just being outright rude. Now ask me if I care?!
I took our son to Gymboree for a few months and I have never felt more out of place. The other Mama's there were driving big shiny cars, wearing diamonds the size of golf balls, and were all very prim and proper. Then there's me. Bright red hair, piercings, tattoos all in plain sight. I was often alone with my kiddo during playgroups and parents actually worked to keep their children away from us. Which to me is a despicable thing to do, especially to a child and one who is as friendly and inquisitive as my son. I had people go so far as to tell me when I was pregnant that "my KIND wasn't welcome" in their store. No, I am sad to say I am not kidding.
All this experience does serve to help me keep a more open mind and to teach my son the same core values.

I used to have dreads to my bum too, I found it was worse then! But I teach at a couple of kindy's a few days a week and they are very accepting of all my tattoos (and the dreads when I had them!), thankfully!!
It kinda sucks actually because I dont have any inked Mama friends... so I definitly stand out in a crowd!!

My husband has a full sleeve, while I pieces here and there on my arms. When we're out with our son, my husband is the one pushing the stroller...and I stand back with a camera. I can almost ALWAYS catch a handful of people staring at him curiously. Having tattoos on your body is obviously going to catch a strangers attention, even if they too are covered. It's a natural curiosity. It is however very sweet when little old women come up to him and comment on how cute it is to see someone who has such "hard" appearance be so sweet to a baby.
One of our ideals as parents was to raise a little human being who was color blind and lacked harsh unfair judgment of strangers based on their appearance. How we plan on accomplishing this was by raising and surrounding him with a colorful variety of people, tattooed and not.

My 8yo son is, I think, a budding accountant - very 'square'. He's a conservative little dude. He recently told me he'd really rather I covered up my (admittedly large) upper arm tattoo and wrist tattoos when visiting his school. He thinks it's embarrasing to have a mom who looks different and doesn't want anyone to think he's 'weird' too. I do indeed cover up the arm tattoo at his school though, per his cringing request. I think he's working on how I dress next lol...

Hi all, I'm fairly new here too. I'm quite heavily inked (feet tattoo's, lower half of right leg blacked out, chest piece, sleeve just started, brandings on left leg and large back piece) and I also have various visable pierings, 30 mm lobes etc. I find I get a lot of "double takes" in the summer if my legs are on show and pretty much ignore it now. My daughter is 21 months and to her they dont make the slightest bit of difference and thats all that counts. I've had a lot of mothers openly stare at baby groups and such but I just smile and wave, they either turn and shudder or will smile back and maybe ask a few questions. I do worry about when my child goes to school as it will be a Catholic school and children can be cruel but we will face that when it happens.
Hope all you other rockin mummies are well!
