Transitioning my toddler from being rocked to sleep to falling asleep on his own?

Hello! I'm new to this community, and a mother of one. I have only recently defined myself as an "AP Mom", although it seems that is what I've been all along. Although my husband and I do not co-sleep with our 2 year old (on most occasions - monsters under the bed notwithstanding), I have rocked him to sleep every day for his nap, and every night at bedtime. We have had him in a wonderful daycare that accommodates us in this as well, at naptime. But he is now approaching 2 1/2 years old, and I've recently become aware that every child at his daycare can go to sleep on their own except him...he still insists on being rocked down. Can any other AP-minded moms can give me any tips on peacefully transitioning him to having the ability to fall asleep on his own? I have no interest in letting him "cry it out" - we've tried this a handful of times in the course of things, and it was misery for all of us. We are also preparing to transition him from his crib to a toddler bed, if that helps. Thanks!
