Rewarding good behavior

Hi ladies, well I need some help. My 3 year and 4 month old son needs more motivation to do the right thing. I have always told him that he was a good boy and thanked him when he obeyed and/or did what he should. However, I think it's getting to be old hat and not as special.
Lately he has been acting up a lot and I think that if we had something like a reward chart or some type of system that it may help. He is my first child so I am just asking for suggestions on how to do this, what rewards to give for what behaviors and so on. I would love any input. Thank you.

We gave M&M's for going to the potty and did sticker charts for potty and staying in room all night by herself...once got 10 stickers, got a small prize! it worked well.
