I went out to my car,tonight,to get my husbands b-day gift and he started crying and shaking at the door?? I was not far and Yan was in the kitchen with him-I thought the separation issues were suppose to stop by 18 months?

I'm so glad I'm not the only one having this problem. My 21 month old son freaks out if I'm not right there all time anymore. Before he go in his room and play and watch Barney. But, he follows me around all day. I really hope it is just stage he is going through because it is very hard!

This is my third child and she is just now starting separation anxiety. Each child goes through it and out grows it. Try little steps like getting away for 5 minutes at a time (close the door when you go to the bathroom or go upstairs alone). Engage him in an activity and then step out of the room. He just needs to know that you will always come back. It helped my first if I didn't make a big fuss when I returned to the same room or when I came back from getting the mail. If he was upset, I just said HI, gave him a hug and redirected him to playing or something else. I tried not to perpetuate his anxiety or make it a big deal. This too shall pass.

I totally sympathise with you - my boy will shake, bang his head hard and get in a worrying state if either me or granny leaves the room. I think it's one of those things they do eventually grow out of. Hopefully someone will put some hints for us.
