My little girl isn't much of a talker. In fact, she doesn't say many words at all, just a handful, and some not clearly. She mostly just babbles. Does anyone else have have late talkers?

Oh this is so comforting! My son says up, light and hot. The doctor told me to call her if he hasn't made much improvent by 20 months but I think she will just send the early intervention out which doesn't sound like a bad idea. Also I have a friend that keeps telling me that he didn't talk until he was three and they thought he was going to have problems but he is quite fine, a genius actually!

Wow, thanks for the feedback! The Dr. says we can go have her hearing tested, and later if we really are concerned, we can also have someone from Early Intervention come and evaluate her. My husband thinks I am overreacting because she listens well and responds to commands. She is also very happy and social, so I think we'll wait it out a little more.

My son is the same way. We have a running joke that he is actually speaking Norwegian because we can only understand a handful of things that he says. He does seem to have decent comprehension of words, though.

I've noticed that with my son...he does say hi but if someone other than my husband, my parents or me says hi to him he shy's away. Which to me I think is normal only because he doesn't know the other person.

Very glad I checked in here! My son was born April 10th and will also babble up a storm complete with proper intonation! I was always worried when I would check the "milestones" charts as they would say he should be saying X-amount of words by now. I can't figure out what constitutes an actual word though. He says "kah" for "car," "I" for "hi," "tra-tra" for tractor etc... If we weren't with him all of the time, we'd have no idea what he was talking about! What bothers me is that he seems really shy to say words when asked...is this normal, even with his own parents?

Tillie only has a few words that she will say.. and they are mostly sound effects "ding!" "Boom" etc. However she has a ton of signs that she has developed on her own. Has your girl done this also?

My son Michael born April 5th 2007 is now 19 months and grunts, he has been saying dad since about 14 months and just about 3 weeks ago started to say mom. We have seen a speech therapist and she said to use simpler terms. We have a daughter Kendra who is 3 and she was talking at 9 months, sounds crazy but true. I know every child develops at their own pace but the doctor seems realy worried. We even see a ears nose and throat specialist he is not worried and hearing came back fine. he listens and does what he is asked and has a great memory but just i find has no need to talk. His sister doesn't talk for him, but he is so scheduled. he hates change likes everything done the same. very particular. when he is ready he will talk.

I also have a son who was born April 26th. He is 18months and only says ball, ma-ma, da-da, and uh-oh. He babbles like crazy and can knows what many objects are. Our pediatrician says as long as he understands we can just re-evaluate him at two years. We are worried, but also think he will talk when he is ready.

I have 3 kids, my oldest who is 6 now, didn't talk much at all till the age of 3, I had her in speech therapy for only about 3 months because she all of a sudden started talking in full clear sentences...I guess she was just taking it all in...

My second daughter talked really early, probably to keep up with her sister. Now my son who is 18 months doesn't say anything, he points and grunts to tell us what he wants...I'm not worried, I know he'll talk when he's ready.

Mine, lil boy, is a late talker he's 18 months and doesn't talk very much but he had some major complications at birth. Um, have you taken her to an ENT( ear nose throat) specialist to check for fluid on the eardrum from an ear infection? Thats what they said made him a late talker

My little guy is the same. I recently had a free speech screening by my state's First Steps program (early intervention for birth through third birthday). I wasn't sure if my concerns were legit or not, but he ended up qualifying. The co-pay is based on your income level - we pay $3 a week for a speech therapist to come to our house to show us some activities we can try with him to get him talking/communicating more. :)

My son is the same. Noah says Mommy, Daddy and Puppy really clear ther than that he only says maybe a dozen words. I try to read to him every night and we watch childrens programming when we get the chance, Elmo's World, Curious George, etc. Noah babbles tons and he is right on the verge of saying tons more. He pretends to talk on the phone, whether it is a phone or not. As long as she is trying I don't think it's anything to worry about yet.

I am so thankful I joined this thread. My little girl was born on April 3rd, 2007 and she is still not saying too many words yet. I asked the doctor if there was a problem and she stated there wasn't because she is babbling and will say a few words.

My son only says a couple of words so the pediatrician had us have some people come to the house and evaluate him and they come every other week and we are having a speech therapist come every other week and he just started a playgroup about 3 weeks ago and it seems to be working some what.

my daughter is very much the same. She says what she knows but is able to sign and act out so we know what her needs are. Shes healthy and happy and i think thats all that matters. if you are concerned there are alot of citys that offer speech therapy (that is covered by the goverment in Canada) that you can get your daughter into. But i dont think you should be to concerned yet every child is differnt and i dont believe they consider them to be behind in speech until there 2 if there not saying much. Hope you have a great day. God Bless

My daughter Cadence isn't much of a talker either. She will babble a whole conversation with you...she acts like she's really saying something but I don't have a clue what she says!

I'm having the same problem with my 19month old. I took him to his 18 mo check up and asked the doctor about it and of course since then he has started to say this and that. I don't know where he picked that up. I am in a playgroup with kids born in the same month and they are so much more verbal. I guess they will talk when they are ready
