My little one has been battling on and off for about 2 weeks now..........last night was the pits though. He screamed the whole night from pain and I had no clue what to do. I gave him prune purity yesterday thinking it would help but it didn't. I've tried glycerine suppositories but they dont' seem to work with him and now I'm feeling hopeless. I've tried the brown sugar and water remedy, also tried the honey and water remedy but doesn't work with him. It breaks my heart to see him in such pain and I've got no clue what to do. My mother inlaw suggested to use milk of magnesia but I don't have much faith in that. Anyone got some suggestions to what I can do to help with the stomach cramps and the constipation?

Hi everyone........well I wanted to let you all know we seem to have it under control now. Spoke to the doctor about it and we now use a syrup called Lacson which we give him 1tsp daily, it's not a laxative but a stimulant which softens the stool and helps regulate the bowels. Since we've been giving him the Lacson he's been regular and has had no pain or cramps. Hope all your little one's get over their constipation and dont' battle anymore. Thanks for all the tips but Lacson was our solution. All the best with your little one's.

To Andrea Beveloque Krause, glad I could help you. I tried quoting but something went wrong :P

To all the mums who have written in- I hope something has helped to relieve your child's discomfort.

I had also tried Coloxyl drops but it didn't appear to work however I was doing the brown sugar in bottles for him at the same time so I may have buggered that up myself- to many remedies at once.

BTW What happened to Lisl- hope you have seen all our suggestions and tried them with big success. Kylie

It turns out for us that Apple juice was causing the constipation. We now have him on pear jucie, and haven't had a problem since.

my oldest can't handle lots of apple juice either!  too much juice of any kind backs him up something awful, but apple juice is particularly bad.  we just cut him back to only having juice in the mornings (with breakfast and snack) and then water the rest of the day (he's not a milk drinker..).  you can always tell when grandpa breaks rank and gives him juice all day, cos he's on the pot all nite!!

my daughter had this from 2 weeks to 12 months until she got on the pediasure. we used treatments daily which included coloxyl drops, plenty of water between feeds, raw sugar in the bottle, prune, orange or apple juice, and eliminate iron from the diet if hes on cows milk maye its that? cows milk can cause constipation if they are not eating enough or if their body is not ready for it yet. we have parachoc here in australia not sure if you have it there tho, i never resorted to suppositories. vaseline on a cotton tip works well use it every time you change his nappy, warm baths and lower tummy massage in a circular motion to. i heard karo syrupworks well, i dont know what it is because im not from the US

Quoting Kylie & Rodney:

Hi Andrea, after months of wondering what could be causing our sons constipation which was a little on and off too- not just all the time. We put it down to him teething. He would be constipated for a couple of weeks and then be fine for a couple of weeks too. He was getting a tooth every 4-6weeks. Everyone said no it couldn't be teeth as all their babies got the runs- well sorry but that's the pattern we had realised was occurring.

Ya know what, you are probably 100% right! Rowan has been cutting teeth like crazy as well as of last week she now has 12 of 'em! The 4 top, the 4 bottom, then 2 on the top way in the back, & the same 2 on the bottom in the back.. So shes constantly teething as well which would explain the off & on constipation!

Thanks Kyile, much appreciated!

Flaxseed is great also an infants probiotic blend found at any health food store. My doctor suggested it for my daughters gastrointestinal ills and it has worked wonders. Its powder and I mix it with her milk. I hope this helps!

Mine will off & on... it seems one week she'll B TOTALLY constipated then the next week for NO reason, she'll be totally regular&normal.. Haven't been able to figure it out yet what I'm doing or NOT doing thats causing it..

HOWEVER, I DO know that when she was constipated the 1 week, I fed her some babyfood Prunes in with her Reg. baby food (ofcourse she squinted & made the "this is icky face" lol) but it did the trick for the time being!

Just MY suggestion hun! good luck!

My son has battled with constipation problems as well. But what has worked best for us is flax seed oil. You can put one tablespoon in a yogurt or applesauce are even in his juice twice a day and it will soon regulate him. But you have to do it everyday and be consistent. It works great and it is safe. You can buy it at vitamins stores and you want to get the liquid form.

Hi- My son is also having some problems too. I am changing his diet since he is not a huge grain fan! (per nurse advice)I am feeding him lots of blueberries, and putting whole grain flakes in his food or cereal. It takes great and it is natural - I even add it to my oatmeal in the am! I got it from GNC(only 1.59 a bag). I also give him prune/apple juice each morning instead of milk. She also said raisins have good fiber. Seems to be working for him now.....hope this helps!

Hi, I went through this problem for about 6months with no sign of improvement till just recently. I got so fed up with everyone suggesting Prune Juice and Pear etc, etc. I did the brown sugar in water which if I added too much my son did get the trots bad. I changed his diet but nothing worked and I was heartbroken with hearing the screams from our boy and having to help him push it out. I went back to the chemist about 6wks ago and finally because he was over 12months I could try something else. I am very happy to say "Parachoc" for my son has worked and we haven't heard him strain and groan in pain trying to push since. Parachoc is an oral liquid and is available over the counter at your local chemist- We live in QLD so I'm hoping if not a QLDer or Aussie its still available where you live. Good Luck and I hope to hear some happy news from you soon.
