I agree with everyone on lots of the suggestions too.  All the really useful stuff--diapers, bath wash, diaper cream, lotion, etc. are good.  Just give a gift receipt in case she gets tons of it. The woman who suggested bringing them meals was also totally right--we've done this in our group of friends and it is so wonderful in those first couple weeks when you're trying to figure out when to sleep, let along cook something.  If you have a group maybe you could all work together to do this--each person can schedule a time to bring a meal so that they don't have a lot at once.  Or people can give frozen meals to be thawed when they're ready.

i agree with a lot of you.  i loved the bumbo.  both of my kids were in at by 2 months.  i also used the fisher price table top aqua swing, (also portable).  i was at a baby shower once a person gave everything you need for a first b-day party (with #1 on it).  plates, napkins, forks, spoons, cups, table cloth.  I thought that was a cute idea, nobody would duplacate that present. i have also seen a subscription to the parents mag. given.  for my shower i got a lot of cloths, though some people didn't take age/season into consideration.  its january with 12" of snow outside in NY and i have a 6-9 month sun dress in the closet.  good luck

I loved all the things I got that were for older babies (6-12 months)-like clothes, toys, blow up tub surround, feeding accessories, etc. Everyone gets stuff for newborns, but within a month or two, they have out grown almost all of it, and you're stuck out shopping!

My favorite was a clear flow bathtub with a built in temp sensor that fit in the kitchen sink. That filled with bath stuff was wonderful!

I recieved the diaper cake and it was so amazing!! It was the cutest idea and was really funny!

I make people a "cake" made out of diapers. I put small gifts on it (spoons, rattles, brush)

I can't think of anything I got that really wowed me. The one thing I would suggest, though, is coupons for meal(s) when the baby is born. I had a c-section and about 10 friends/neighbors brought food for us and we went three weeks not having to cook. Talk about an amazing blessing. That was the best. I've decided that's going to be the thing I "pay forward" for my friends having kids. I did it already with one and I was the only person who brought her food. She and her husband were so surprised and grateful. I'm definitely going to do it again.

The papasan seat was a lifesaver for both our children. My first one loved to sleep in that and it helped soothe our second one when he was having acid pain the first week of his life. They are great for helping the babies stay upright after feeding especially if they have reflux issues. My husband wants one in an adult size.

I have to agree with another poster - the Bumbo seat, but definitely with the tray! We didn't have one for our first and I wish we did! Our second loved it, and it's great to have an extra seat when my friend comes over with her baby! I bought a basket with the necessities - bathing, powder, lotion, etc. for my friend and she said that was pretty much all she got from everyone so she was overloaded! It takes a really long time to go through that stuff with a little baby, anyway, so I'd stick with something like a variety of diapers - maybe size Newborn and 1 or 1-2 since you never know how fast they will grow!

At my shower for my twins, I got a diaper bag full of onsies-different sizes up to 18 months, a couple of outfits, hair bows, etc. I loved this. Also, someone got me some stuff for when the kids started eating-I can't remember what it is called, but you put frozen homemade pears, baby carrots, or any other food inside, shut the lid, and give to the kid. A meshlike bag protects the food and the baby does't choke on any food. I had gotten some sippy cups, spoons, etc. These things you don't think about, but when you need them at 4-6 months, you have some. For me it was a blessing-loading twins is hectic. Socks in different sizes-and you can never have enough blankets or diaper bags.

I like the bumbo seat, it's not something people always register for (I didn't) but end up buying (I did). Someone also gave me one of those little high chairs that strap on to a dining/kitchen chair. That has come in handy at Grandma's house and even restaurants before my baby could sit up for a long time unassisted (the restaurants tend to have low back highchairs and the portable one has a full back. It even folds up and has a should carrying strap. I didn't register for that but am glad I have it. Just a couple ideas...

My aunt and cousin gave me a baset with baby blankets draped over the top. When I pulled them off I found a bunch of clothes inside. they clip them to a clothesline with clothespins and they just went on and on. They also threw in some laundry detergent. Everyone got a huge kick out of it and it was too fun.

Another idea for a basket is a blow up bath tub--they sell them at walmart/target for &10. I fill them up with goodies and it looks too cute. People also seem to like that...something a littel extra. Have fun!

I always give my close friends a basket of all the stuff no one buys you...spoons, bowls, cups, tyelnol, diaper cream, little noses, etc. These things aren't glamourous but you use them all and as a new mom you are clueless at some point you are going to need this stuff and it adds up! All my girlfriends I have done it for have called me later on and thanked me for having a XYZ later on! There is only so much clothes, etc. that you need. I appreciated the little stuff.

I got a musical CD that was personalized with my baby's name in all the songs. EX: "Wake up, Reagan, it's time to wake up"..... I thought it was pretty neat.

A pregnancy journal is such a nice idea I've seen, espcecially if it's her first. Or they have been waiting a long time. They have these bouquet's now that you can choose for a center piece for the shower and inside are rolled up onesie's or socks and stuff like that! I made on and it turned out great!
