For our first we did a butterfly party. We had a cookout, and now we do everyyear, cupcakes and drinks. It was a focus on her and her first year.
For Samantha, turns one on the 11th of April, we are having a girly girl party. Princess everything. We are having pizza, cupcakes, a small cake for her, and just getting together to celebrate the first year!

We just celebrated Henry's first birthday (April 1st) on Saturday. I kept it pretty simple and went with a spring theme (I can reuse some of the decor. for Easter!). I found the cutest Easter Crackers, overturned a cake plate and had a nest with eggs on the top, and miny cupcakes (a la www.bakerella.blogspot.com) on the plate bottom.
I did sew a homemade Birthday Banner that I'm hoping to reuse every year for all of our Brithdays. For Birthday gifts we bought my son a large (taller then him) parking garage by a quality German toy maker (Wader). Both his grandma's made him the most beautiful quilts! To be honest, my son had a great time - but I definitely enjoyed it all the most :)
You can see a bit of his birthday on my poorly updated blog: www.nestwithaview.blogspot.com

We just had my sons first birthday party last Saturday. I went with the #1 theme for decorations and had a few Elmo things mixed in just for him! We had an Elmo pinata, the kids loved it! Beware though........I bought a pinata stick at the party store.....It broke in half when one of the older kids hit Elmo and went flying across the room almost hitting my mother in law who was holding my 3 month old nephew........Talk about a close call! My son had his own cake which my mother picked out, it had blue and green frosting! His cheeks and lips were green for 2 days, and dont get me started on the other end! It was alot of fun, but also a lot of work! Hey, they only have a first birthday once right!?!

That is a very good idea getting cupcakes. I have seen at walmart and other places where they have a set where the cupcakes look like a cake, but are cupcakes. Does that make sense? Also, Walmart gives away free cakes for birthdays I do believe. Our first birthday party was a success!!!

I would suggest planning it around nap time! So I would definately do it around lunch time. I'm doing an individual cake for my daughter and cupcakes for everyone else. Don't forget to take pictures if you let your little one have a cake:)

Cute theme...maybe suggest your guests come dressed in their favorite superhero t-shirt/outfit. We are doing a circus theme, outside at home, hot dogs, nachos, popcorn, etc. I got a "barrel of monkeys" fun jump, making a bean bag toss game, pin the nose on the clown, pull string pinata, bubble station. I searched online for party ideas then figured out a way to do the party cheaper...as Jenn suggested the Dollar Store is a great outlet for party favors, party supplies. I'm making the cake, it's a clown face decorated using candy, circus peanuts for the ears, gum balls, etc. Cupcakes are a great idea also and you don't have to bother with cutting a cake.
We are going to do a Pirate theme for my son's birthday and pretty much the same thing. Lunch, cake, drinks. Maybe depending on the ages of people do some games and have some gift bags for the older kids. We were going to have gift bags full of pirate stuff from the dollar store.
