How many naps in a day?

Claire isn't ready to shift to no naps yet....she sleeps 9hours through the night and after about 3-4 hours of being awake goes down for a nap and sleeps for 1.5-3 hours. She is then up again for a few hours, and by her behaviour I want to put her down again for another nap....I don't....but she ends up being miserable and I mean miserable until bed time. It seems like she needs another nap in the afternoon, but I am thinking that is too much sleep for a 2 yr old?

My twin girls turned 2 on 22nd April, they have 1 nap a day which is between 1-3 hrs and sleep for at least 12 hrs a night. I have found when they don't get their proper amount of sleep they are significantly more difficult to manage, as well as less likely to be ready for bed at the normal bedtime. They're both recovering from colds at the moment and have been sleeping about 3 hrs in the afternoon (great for me!) but they are not that tired come bed time. They still go to bed at the normal time and usually we hear happy little conversations for half an hour...I guess what I'm trying to say is sometimes, even when they aren't tired going to bed can be a good thing. Good luck :-)

My daughter turned 2 on 24th April and she sleeps from 6.45pm-7am and she goes for a nap from 10-12ish, sometimes longer.
Every child is different the key is to be consistant, put her to sleep at the same time each day and get into a routine for bedtime and naptime.
we do bath at 6.15,get her ready for bed read a book with the blackout blind and curtains closed and then milk and we put her in her cot and leave the room while she is still awake, we don't talk to her after her milk.
I find if my daughter doesn't sleep well in the day (if we are away for the weekend) she wakes up earlier the next morning, she also needs to be in a cot rather than in the car or a pushchair.
A 2 year old should be having at least 14 hours sleep total 11-12 at night and 1-3 hours in the daytime.
Hope this helps

my daughter goes to bed around 7:30 and wokes up at 6 ... She only takes one nap around noon for about 1 1/2. She is 2. Each child is different....Maybe try waiting closer to 5 hr.

Hi... I agree w/ Candice, maybe she isn't sleeping enough at night? She sounds like she needs more sleep. I think at this age they should be sleeping 11.5-12 hrs a night, and one nap in the afternoon. What time is her bedtime? Maybe make it earlier, around 7 or 7:30 if it is now later.

My 2 yr old daughter takes one nap throughout one day. She ususally wakes up around 9:00 am and is ready to nap around 4 or 5 and she goes down for bed around 9pm. It won't hurt to let them nap as long as they sleep during the night.

Hi Jennifer,
My daughter Kara turned 2on April 28th and she gets up at 6am and she goes down for a 3 hour sleep roughly 4-5 hours after being up. She then goes to bed at 7.30pm and up again at 6am.
Kara is going through the terrible twos and she throws tantrums etc. Her routine at night is tea at 6pm, then straight into bath, pj's, cuddles then bed.
You could try putting your daughter down for another nap and see if that helps her or you could try putting her to bed early. I have had 4 kids now (my oldest is 10 and my youngest is 1 month) They all varied in their sleeps. My theory from experience is that kids sleep what they need and I dont think their is a right and wrong when it comes to how much sleep they have or need.
hope that has helped. Good luck
Lisa

My 2 year usually takes 1 or 0 naps a day. When she has a growth spurt it usually goes back to 2 times a day. On the days she doesn't get a nap she ends up going to bed early. Her 1 nap is usually around lunch time, either right before or after. She will sleep anywhere from 1 to 3 hours during nap time.

If your little one wants to sleep let her! i know it seems like she is sleeping all the time, but maybe she is just going through a growth spurt and needs the extra down time. This too shall pass so I say let her sleep and finish that book you have been meaning to or maybe get some housework done. Before you know it she wont want to take naps at all and you will be remembering fondly the days when she took two naps a day and you had free time.

Every child is different. Your little one will tell you when she doesn't want to sleep. If she wants to sleep in the afteronoon then let her. She may not be as miserable. You can try not to let her sleep after 4pm so she sleeps at night. Do what makes you and claire happy.

Matthew has had one nap a day since he was one. At around 12:30 in the afternoon he sleeps for about 2 hours. He goes to bed at 8pm every night & gets up around 7am. I hope this is helpful.

Sid has one nap a day. He's usually up around 830'ish and takes his nap around 2 till 4pm'ish. His bedtime is usually around 8pm. This time frame works well for us! If you think Claire could use a second nap, try it out! I read somewhere that at this age, 14 hours of sleep including naps is the "average"

Bravery just turned one yesterday, and shes been only having one nap a day for a while now. She goes to bed around 8 and wakes up around 8.. then her nap time is from about 12:30-2.
I always say every chid is different, you need to do what works for you and Claire :)
