You could give him cooked carrots, peas, pears anything soft in the fruits and vegi category I think. I give my son peas and carrots, green beans, bread, noodles, Gerber Puffs

my son has just gone 7 months, he happily eats fruit and vegetables. he loves banana's, melons, apple, mango, pear, peaches, apricots, pumpkin, sweet potato, zucchini, broccoli, cauliflower. i steam the veges then puree or finely chop/mash and then freeze. I find if he doesn't quite like something (like broccoli for the first time) i will mix in a small amount of something he really likes (banana or apple etc) and decrease the amount each time he has it. I also still add a spoon of organic oat porridge to some foods as he loves it.

My son is shunning smooth foods too.
Just today, my pediatrician recommended tofu.
Hard boiled egg yolks are ok at this age (not egg whites) cut into little bits.
A great book for more ideas is Super Baby Food by Ruth Yaron.

I'm in the total same place as you

Here are the things I feed my daughter who will only feed herself:

Frozen peas (I mean it, don't even bother to thaw them let alone cook them! - They're great for teething too!)

Canned veg (They're already cooked so you don't need to prepare anything)

Udon noodles (Those big chunky Japanese noodles)

Cheerios

Mum Mum biscuits

Sometimes my daughter (rarely but on the occasion..) will let us feed her pureed chicken and veg from the hippy-hypochondriac store (health food junky store) that's frozen but real food.

You may also want to try avocados and bananas (although I've had no PERSONAL success with them, I put it all down to an overly independent child pros-and-cons)

My daughter has never allowed us to feed her cereal or any jarred food.

My son never objected to anything we gave him until he turned 2 ( and he greatfully excepted food at 5 1/2 mths). So my hope is, that my daughter (who BTW is 8 mths) will learn to be less objective as she ages. Of course the juries still out. Any other ideas of foods to feed little miss independent - well I'll keep read your thread....
