Road trip w/ a toddler

In April we will be traveling to TX for our vacation. I'm starting to try to plan activities for my 3 year old son to do in the car for the 18 hr drive. We will be breaking it up into a couple of days, but still, even 10-12 hrs in the car will be a long time for him at a time. I plan to get a lap table that attaches to the car seat so he can drive his cars, or color, or just have a place for a snack. Does anyone have any suggestions for things that we can do in the car to help pass the time for him?

Back in Janurary my husband, 2-year-old and myself drove all the way to Montana from Illinois. (24 hours drive 1500 miles one way!) We basically drove straight through stopping to use the rest room and eat. We took lots of things for my daughter to do like coloring books and crayons, books, her leapfrog gaming system, her camera, snacks, jucie. We just made her as comfortable as possible for her. We also put some of the songs that she likes on our mp3 player and let her listen to her songs over and over and over again! She did a really great job driving such a long distance! We also will be planning a road trip to TX after the summer so I was kinda wondering the same thing. We do have a portable DVD player that helps. Make sure you make road side stops at play-grounds even if it's just for 10 minutes. Bring games and maybe play I Spy with things in the car. I let my son help with packing his little back pack when we go on trips with things that he wants. Hope this helps a little.
