This is my third pregnancy, with my first two I had little to no heartburn but with this one I've had heartburn everyday for the last week. It usually begins in the afternoon and lasts through bedtime. I've tried everything - dietary adjustments, tums, rolaids, very small portions, eating every two hrs, mylanta, papya enzymes, not laying down after eating, milk, teas, almonds, you name it, I've tried it. And most of them all at the same time (besides the medications, I gave up on them early on). Nothing has worked and I'd prefer not to get a prescription but I may need to. Any advice?

Cinnamon gum???  Interesting, I'll have to give it a try.

My sister swore by cinnamon gum. She said it worked better than anything.

I've had horrible heartburn, and acid reflux, but this is mainly my fault, I eat spicy  foods unfortunately I can't get enough of it. Always been a hot sauce fan. but I've used tums, and it's lead to eating handfuls at a time. I've tried rolaids which are horrible, and are pretty much useless, and I've also had Pepcid AC which has seemed to be the best solution and fast acting. I've heard with pepcid not to take it while breastfeeding, I'm really not sure of the reason's I kind of heard it wasn't good during the pregnancy but then looked it up online, and it said that it is perfectly fine to take during pregnancy just not while breastfeeding and really I don't understand what the difference is. but! I am now using Zantac 75, which works so well I can actually lay down without feeling like I swallowed a ball of fire and trying to spit it up!

So pretty much the best ones in my opinion, are Pepcid and Zantac.
Pepcid is so quick and works well, with Zantac you have to make sure you take it before you try eating your meals or if you try and take it after, it may take a little longer to stop.

Hope that helps! :)

I've had horrible heartburn as well...since about the 4-5 month...I also get wicked acid reflux, where the front of my chest burns and it shoots right through to my back between my shoulder blades.  I use the liquid gaviscon AS SOON AS THE BURNING STARTS, if not, I'm screwed and nothing takes it away.  I was told to drink 1/2 hour to an hour after eating dinner, since I usually get it in the evening.  But I don't like to take it EVERYDAY so I just wait and see if I get the burning then take it right away.  Providing I'm home.  I take 3 teaspoons of it.  Yep the taste and texture isn't that great but it sure beats the awful burning.  That really ficken hurts.  Here's hoping that you find your cure :)

You don't have to get a prescription. I use Zantac 150 and that helps me a lot. I have hearburn even when I haven't eaten anything! lol It's so annoying, but it had gotten so bad that I was waking up at night and practically vomitting heartburn fluids -yuck! I had called the Dr. and believe it or not, no one was in the office that day, so i went online and found that zantac was safe. When I finally went for my visit, the midwife said it was ok, too.

i'm SO with u on this!!! u know, i even get heart burn when i drink water!!! how that happens, i really cant explain... lol

Zantac was helping with mine. I took it about an our before bed. Now I have to pair it with 4 tums before bed and that seems to be working for now.

I had really bad heartburn with my first....I couldn't eat anything that had any flavor...it sucked...I had to eat very bland food....mostly baked potatoes with nothing (not even butter) on them...I took pepcid complete with her and sometimes it helped but most the time it didn't....I drank lots of milk to make it more bearable for a few minutes but nothing made it go away completely....

Heartburn is my only complaint. My Dr. said i can take zantac and for the most part it has helped.(although the heartburn has been so bad i have gotten sick.) if u have to get a prescription, do it. i think as long as it makes the pain go away and it wont hurt the baby it's ok.

I've had really horrible heartburn with my last two pregnancies, and I took the pill form of Pepcid. It seems to help at least for 8-12 hours...it got me through!

have to agree with kriste abt the head of hair! lol my girl was born with a full head but it could have been coincidental. :) this is my second pregnancy and it wasnt as bad as the first. for the first, i had heartburn from the start to the end, this time, it started abt 6 months or so. and the same thing as it is a whole day affair. i've reached a point where i have managed to 'tune it out' and just ignore it. i used to practically live on quick-eze which is the same as maalox i think but now i just dont bother n stick it out. another remedy is ginger...perhaps candied ginger might help as well. hang in there, just a few more weeks. :)

I too have horrible heart burn.  I'm taking Zantac 150 mg twice a day, it helps me sleep anyway.  I still have break through heart burn, but I have a hital hernia and take some pretty strong stuff when I'm not preggo.   I took it throughout my first pregnancy and my daugther was fine.  Don't suffer if  you don't have too.

I"ve had heartburn through the whole pregnancy it seems.  OTC Pepcid, milk, small easy to digest meals, and not eating late are the only things that have helped some.  It still flairs up from time to time.  The good news is we're in the final stretch & things will get better.  With your heartburn just now starting it may just be pressure on your stomach from the baby.  There's nothing you can really do for that other than go into labor...

I had heartburn with my first pregnancy and I think I lived on Tums, but they didn't work that well. At the hospital when my daughter was born, the nurses gave me Maalox and it worked great. So I was waiting on the heartburn to start with my pregnancy this time and it just did a week ago. This time I drink a glass of milk when it starts in the afternoon and then take Maalox and it works great! Sometimes I have to take Maalox again before bed, but it works immediately!

Hey Bobbi-Jo...I am on my 2nd pregnacy and have had horrible heartburn!!! I just chalked it up to the pregnancy until my mother in law saw just how many Tums I was throwing down!! She insisted I talk to my ob and sure enough she did give me a prescription...Pepcid. Let me tell you....it has TOTALLY helped!!!!!!! On Valentine's Day my hubby and I ate at a Mexican resturant and had no problems even at bed time. I know what you mean about not wanting a prescription, but it really helped and it's safe. I take it first thing in the am and have no problems all day and night! Hope that helped!

I sympathise. Particularly horrible when everything you read says not to eat spicy food, etc and you haven't been!

My medicinal remedy of choice is ice-cream! :)

Wish I had some advice for you, I feel your pain though. I've got horrible indigestion every night that makes me nauscious. Just try to eat as healthy as you can. At least with heartburn they say your baby will have a full head of hair, lol.
