Mucous Plug???

I'm 36 weeks and 6 days and at my doctors appointment on Tuesday afternoon I was 2cm dilated and 75% effaced, and then later that night ended up going to the hospital with strong contractions 4-5 minutes apart. When I got there I was 3cm dilated and 80% effaced so they sent me home with a big antihistamine to help me sleep and quiet my uterus to give my little guy a few more days to "cook". However, I've continued to have mild contractions all day yesterday and today and earlier today after using the restroom I noticed a grape sized chunk of what looked like snot....Just curious from an experienced person's point of view might this be me starting to lose my mucous plug??

Ahh but you're getting close right?? When is your due date? I had the most crazy fast and furious labor! Went from 4-10 in 3 hours and 45 minutes! I only had my epidural for 20 minutes before I started pushing!

I'm 36 weeks today. I lost my mucus plug a week and a half ago. My doctor said don't worry about it unless my water breaks. With my first baby, I didn't loose it till a few hours before I delivered her. I also went from under a centimeter dialated to her crowning in under 4 hours. This time I have had braxton hix contractions which I didn't have with my first pregnancy. I wouldn't stress out too much over the mucus plug. And trust me You will definately know when your in real labor. It is just a feeling .... and you know. There will be a real difference in the feeling when it is the real thing. I know you problobly hate hearing that but unfortunately it is so true. My sugestion is have your bag ready.... and when you know your in labor.... take a shower.... double check everything.... then head to the hospital. Take your time because it really sucks when you get there and have a bunch of nurses who deal with women all day acting like your over reacting about  the pain. And considering I did it without any medication the first time... not by choice.... Trust me the pain gets to the point where you will wish you were dead.... so if it dosn't feel like that... then you more than likely have enough time to relax and take your time.

Hello, i had the same thing at 38 weeks. The plug does not always have to be bloody, so could have been Rebekah. How are you now?

I've been losing bit's of mine as well, about every two days or so, for the past week and am about 3 cm dilated. Completely normal...I just wish the old wives tale of "You lose the plug, you're going into labor that night" was true! I'm so ready for this little guy to make his debut...unfortunately I'm not due til the 22nd, so technically I could still have a long time to go...we'll see...my mom voted for April 9th as a convenient time for her, lol...

Quoting Melissa:

It is a sign your cervix is dilating but not of labor. I would tell your OB at your next visit that you lost it. It does not mean imminent labor as women can walk around for a week after losing it I am living proof of that but I don't know about 24 days you would have to ask your doc about that one.

THank You Melissa I really appreciate your reply... I couldnt believe it lol as I was walking into the hospital to go see a friend that just had her baby boy...I was saying to myself geez should I stay :)

It is normal to lose a mucous plug in a big piece or over time.  With my first, I lost it 16 days before she was born.  It came out as a chunk, tinged with blood and then I would lose tiny pieces here and there up to her birth.  With my current pregnancy (38w4d) I lost it in a chunk at 34 weeks, then it regenerated and I have been losing it in pieces over the last few days again.  This time, it is not tinged with blood but gelatenous mucous.  Hope this little one comes out soon though!  Good luck to you!

sounds like a mucus plug to me. I lost mine after having my membranes swept to help me go into labor on my own. it can have blood in it or not. Most of it came out at once but then I have had a discharge of similar looking mucus ever since. I did not end up in labor and still waiting for my induction tomorrow night.

YES! Sounds like your little guy wants to come early. It's OK your far along enough nothing to worry about. It's around this time when things start happening.

Yeah I asked my "doctor" mom hehe and she said it sounds like what it is. I have a doctor's appointment today so we shall see what she says!

With my first, I lost my mucous plug in a bigger chunk and it was twinged wih blood. With this one, I've been experiencing what you've described over the past week. I told my dr at my last appt and she asked if had any odor or itchy going on with it and I said no and she said "That's normal" I'm just now 36 weeks today so we'll see!

Here is what I found....hth...
The mucus plug often looks like a jelly-like chunk of discharge that is clear, slightly pink, or tinged with a small amount of blood. Sometimes, instead of a jelly-like chunk, in some women the mucus plug looks like stringy mucus or a sticky discharge.

While blood in the mucus plug can be normal, the amount of blood is generally a spot -- no more than a teaspoon or two. If you have more blood than that, contact your healthcare provider.

I've actually lost 2 or 3 more small chunks over last night! I"m just confused because none of it has had any pink or brown tinge like everything I read suggests...?

I was actually just going to post on here a similar question. I'm 38 weeks and started losing mine 2 days ago but now EVERYTIME I go to the bathroom i lose a ton of brown/pink really thick snot like mucous. It does sound like you lost your plug, but I wonder if you will continue to lose it or if that was it.
