No way. My baby is 10 months and only 16 lbs and very healthy! The important thing is to look at their overall growth and are they hitting their milestones. As one well-respected pediatrician says "Look at the baby not the scale!" The charts they use are simply averages. Do NOT feed him more than he wants to eat! By 9 months, he knows when he is hungry and when he is full. Listen to your instincts. You are doing a great job. Also, childhood obesity is more of an issue now than ever - I think we need to teach our kids to eat when they are hungry and stop when they are full, not force them to eat to fit a certain standard in an already overweight society.

I just took my girl for her 9 mth check up recently and was told that she's only in the 3rd percentile coz she weighs just under 15 lbs. I'm feeding her 3 solids a day and milk in between but she just doesn't like milk that much and is drinking half of what she should. The doc has asked me to try and fatten her up and start feeding her every 2 hours but bcoz she doesn't have a big appetite, she threw up at least once a day due to overfeeding so I've had to adjust the portions and timing. I think it's just ridiculous. My girl is healthy and even hyperactive! Maybe that's why she's not gaining weight coz she burns off what she consumes so quickly! Anyway, I've got 2 mths to fatten her up or else they're going to do a blood test. Let's see how that goes... Honestly, I feel your pain. It's very stressful as it is to raise a baby and to have people think you're not feeding your baby enough is just disheartening. We are doing the best we can!

My son was pretty much exactly the same weight as yours. My plunket nurse said he was doing fine. He is just under the 50% in the well child book. As long as he is constantly putting weight on then I wouldn't be to concerned with what he actually weighs.

My son was only 16 pounds, 5 ounces at his 9 month checkup (he was 7lbs, 6oz at birth).. The doctor said not to worry as he's super active and doesn't appear any worse for wear. I try to feed him whenever I can but he'll only take so much. If your son is happy then I say continue what you're doing - you know your son the best.

My little girl just turned 9 months this month, and she weighed 17 lbs 13 oz, on her last dr appointment. My little girl is tiny, but she is also 27 inches long. Her Dr. never said anything about her weight being an issue. But she eats like a pig! Sometimes I mix a jar of baby food with her milk, and she's still hungry! I breastfeed her up until 6 months, and surprisingly she wouldn't take the breast anymore. So I've started making her a 4 oz bottle and mix in an entire jar of fruit, and its gone within minutes. If your worried about his weight maybe try mixing in a jar of baby food with his milk if you haven't tried already. Hope this helps! Good luck :D.

My youngest son was 8 lbs 3ozs at birth and at 9 months 24 lbs 11 ozs.

My daughter was 6 lbs 13 ozs at birth and at 9 months only 14 lbs.

My oldest son was 7 lbs 14 ozs at birth and at 9 months 20 lbs.

My boys are 10.5 months and weigh 17 and 18 pounds and our doctor didn't seem that concerned by it... I guess it is on the low end but if they are eating when they are hungry(and they are), there is not much I can do about it and it sounds like the same is happening for you.

I was told by my doctor that it depends on weight vs height. I was concerned that our son was too big because a friend of ours had their baby 10 days before us and he weighed 16lb at 9 months and brody weighed 21.3 pounds at 9 months. when i asked the doctor he told me that weight vs height he is in the 50th percentile for weight which was average and perfect for HIM. he was 29 inches at 9 months. and i find the nurses have different opinions than the doctors sometimes. so i would worry about what your doctor says and not the nurse. i am lucky though, my doctor is very old school which i like.

My 9 month old was 23.5 pounds and he is very heavy. I wouldn't worry too much about your son, children's weight goes up and down throughout their lives. If you are concerned about it then maybe give him more fatty foods. I give my son a lil ones yogurt every day it is good for their age group and have that DHA in it. He eat a bottle of formula in the morning then about 2 hours later he has cereal and a fruit, then 2 hours later more formula, four hours later formula, two hours later he has dinner which is two veggies apple sauce that yogurt and a meat trust me he is full, 2 hours later he has a little cereal then a bath and then his last bottle of formula then off to bed. If you son is not on much of a routine maybe you can trick him into eating more and gradually put him on a routine but if he is on a routine confuse him a bit and set it off then he will eat whatever whenever because he just won;t be sure. Hope this helps. Good Luck and I'm sure your a great mom.

My daughter at her 9 month check up was at 20 lbs and my doctor told me she was over wieght but it was nothing to worry about. some babies will eat when they want and some wont when theyre not hungry. dont let the doctor make you feel like ur a bad mom. you are doing what you can. when i nursed my daughter for the 1st month or 2 she didnt want to eat so i put her on formula and she gained weight like crazy. every baby is different. both of my kids were very chubby and now my son at almost 8 years old and is skinny as a twig and wont eat anything. my daughter is only 10 moths old and is still 20 lbs cuz she never wants to finish her food. one day ur son will just gain the wieght like crazy and then ur doctor will say hes over weight. u should always listen to the doctor when it comes to kids but when they say over or underweight at 9 moths. dont listen to them. they shouldnt say that when theyre that young. hope i helped a little bit.

All babies go through stages for refusing food and this causes them to go up and down in weight. My son was 19 lbs. 13 oz at his checkup and is in the 97th percentile for heighth. He then, for 3 weeks, refused to eat jar food. Like you, I tried and tried to get him to eat. He wouldn't and I didn't force it on him. My ped wasn't concerned about his weight because he is healthy and meets his milestones. He is VERY active and has been crawling since 7 months. You are doing a great job! Don't stress about weight. What did the ped say?

When I took my daughter in for her 9-month appt last month, she weighed 16lb 10oz (she was 7lb 11oz at birth). Did you son drop drastically off of his curve on the growth chart? My DD did that at 4 months (dropped from 30th to 15th percentile). Since then, she has stayed between 13th and 17th. The only time her dr was concerned was when that big drop happened.

What a horrible nurse to make you feel that way. I took my son for his 9 month and he weighted 18 pounds 2 oz. She explained that his weight may have gone down because he is more active. Kids will eat when they are hungry and they will let you know when they are hungry. Don't feel bad. If you son gets plenty to eat already and he is learning new things and active he should be fine.

I think your nurse is overreacting a little bit. Every baby is different and it doesn't mean they are underweight. My son is nearly 11 months and he weighs 21lbs. At 9 months I think he was around 18 or 19 and no one said anything to me about it. I have a girlfriend who's daughter weighed 17lbs at 1 year, and she is just fine. You are doing a great job! If he is happy, and healthy that's all that matters. My son doesn't have a huge appetite either. Sounds like you are doing a great job to me!

Hi amber,

Just to put your mind at ease...my 10 month old boy weighs 17 pounds and is a happy little boy. Our dr. is not worried about his weight as he has been putting on weight at his own rate and because he is doing all the things he is supposed to be doing at his age. My son, Louis, eats three meals a day at set times and some snacks in between. Louis likes his food with some of my friends even commenting on how much he can eat. Yet he is still a "petit" boy. I guess that is just his built.

You are doing the right thing and you can't feed a baby more than what he wants to eat. I read somewhere that if you do force them to eat you might put them of completely. I would check with your peadiatrician and see what he thinks if you are still worried.

my son will be 10 months on the 24th and he weighs almost 25 lbs. I think it is according to the fathers size and if your baby is hungry he will eat more. I wouldn't let it worry you for now unless he is sickly. Sometimes nurses can be a little critical.

my little girl has just gone 10 months and has only just cut her first two teeth. her teething was really hard on her and she barely ate. and since has barely eaten. i weighed her a week ago and she was 8.4kg. and i felt really bad, like she is under weight. like you i try to feed her more then she will eat and i give her her normal amount of bottle feeds and water. but her food intake slowed over her teething and hasn't improved since. so i was a little relieved to see the response posting the average weight of babies at this age. my little girl was born tiny only 2300gm/5lb2oz (due to strong pre eclampsia) and her weight has always worried me, i see babies her age all rolly and cute and she is a almost lanky thing, not skinny but no rolls. but my doctor assures me she is fine. so do take into consideration the size born but don't stress too much unless your baby is very tired or lethargic all the time then its time to go to the doctor and get a few different opinions if needed.

Think it depends on what they were at birth. Ii don't think he sounds underweight at all!!! My daughter is now 10months and weighs 18lbs 15oz and aparantly thats fine. My Health Visitor said they dont want them dropping more than 2 percentiles from that they were born in. It sounds like your baby was born in the 75th so as long as he doesnt drop below the 25th she shouldn't be worrying you! Plus they are soooo active at this age and so fussy, my girl will hardly eat anything at the moment as her teeth are so sore. I really woudn't worry.

I recently took my son for his nine month check up as well and he weighed 20 pounds 3 ounces and my doctor said he was at a really good weight and height maybe the problem isn't that your son is under weight he could just be taller than normal or there is nothing wrong at all he only weighs 2 pounds less then my son and i don't think that is a big enough gap to say that he is on the verge of being under weight i say keep doing what your doing no one knows your kid better than you and if he don't want to eat like you said i wouldn't force him either maybe try the liquid stuff like pedialyte or pediasure just to make your doctor happy and you never know maybe he will gain weight from this too.

I personally wouldn't worry about it at all. With my first son (who has just turned 4) was ready for solids at 3 1/2 months, there was just no other way we could settle him apart from starting the weaning process 'early'. My HV told me that under no circumstances should I start weaning him before the recommended 6 months as he would be obese when he was older. I thought at the time (& now know) that she was trying to scare me into not doing it. After speaking to my Mum & Mother-In-Law they said "go with whatever you feel is right, you are the ones that have to cope with his demands night & day......." if he's hungry & not wanting milk then what else is/was there to do. Happily (& not surprisingly!) my eldest is NOT obese, far from it.

My second is nearly 110 months old & on a 'typical' diet. I haven't had him in for his 9month check up/weighing yet but I listen to the advice that is given to me & do what I feel is right, not what other people try & tell me to do.

Basically at the end of the day, you are the one that is with your son day in, day out & I'm sure you would know/realise if he was underweight or if there was any obvious problems. I say just go by your gut/mothers instinct & you won't go far wrong!! It has always worked for me & my two....!!!!

Good luck!!!
