Our son was always on the low end of the charts for weight. He was in the 10% at three months. I upped the amount I fed him in a bottle and the frequency and he has gained steadily since. At his 9 month appointment he was 22.2 lbs which made him much higher on the charts. As long as your child is eating a well balanced diet I would not worry. Is he on solid foods or just formula/breast milk? That could make him on the lighter side as breast fed babies do weigh less most often. There is a separate growth chart for them.

My Zak, is 16 lbs. He was born preemie, yet, has caught up on most everything. I, too, worry that he doesnt weigh enough. He, too, eats ALL the time. I am blessed that he is healthy and happy and VERY active.

Hi Amber - I wouldn't worry too much, my daughter just had her check-up yesterday and weighs 16lbs 2oz, and is in the 7th percentile for weight. The doctors says she needs to get her weight up, but I am not worried, she eats, is healthy and developing just fine. Don't stress it.

My little girl is 10 months and she weights 16 LBS. She was only 5lbs 8 oz. when she was born 2 days past due. So she has been under weight but is still growing well. My dr. is not concerned. But all of my children are under the norm weight. But all are very healthy. Every child is different, dont stress as long as your baby is eating well and is healthy your doing a great job. Good luck to you and your lil boy!

I think maybe she wants to be sure there is nothing wrong with you son, I don't beleive that you are not doing your job for one minute. I went through failure to thrive with my DD, it is of no fault, he may jsut need a higher calorie diet.Def. keep the lines of communication open with the Dr. to work toward a solution..My DD is now 21lbs at 10 months and is a little prok chop!

Well I don't know what 18 pounds 6 ounces is in kgs, but my 10 month old is just over 9 kg and definitely does not look nor act like she is being starved. My advice is to go with your instinct and if u feel your bub needs more food then give it to him otherwise keep doing what you are doing. Most of thes nurses are great and give alot of good advice and support but there are also a small minority that are just bitches and make u feel veryincompetent as a mum. When all is said and done the best judge is your baby and if he is happy and healthy than u have nothing to worry about. Keep up the good work!!

Hi Amber - Emma just had her 9 month checkup about a week ago and she weighs the same, 18 lbs, 6 oz. Only when I asked how much solids I should be feeding her did they doc say, 'as much as she wants'. They didn't make me feel like she wasn't getting enough - just that I could feed her more if I/she wanted. I'm sorry your doc's office made you feel bad - they should be there to help, not judge.

I can understand you being upset but try to brush it off. My daughter is in a similar situation, she is leveling off a bit. Children all grow/ develop at different rates. The lady may have come off a bit brash, people in the heathcare industry see so much they sometimes lose the human element. I am still nursing, when she will sit still, but have very little fat in my milk so I been feeding her various foods. She loves avocados and they are high in healthy fats.

We just took our son for his 9 month check up and he was 17 pounds but our doctor said it was fine because he is in 75th percentile in length and 5th percentile in weight but he said he was healthy and that all babies are different it was nothing to worry about, my son eats all day long but his build is long and slender so dont worry you are doing your job some babies just are not as heavy as others if he is eating and gets full then thats all he wants and our pediatrician assures us that ALL BABIES are different so dont worry you are doing a great job

Boo to that nurse for making you feel that way!!

My little one has always been a little skinny but she decided at about 8 months that she no longer wanted jarred food and only feeds herself so she is eating a little less than before.

She only weighed 16lbs, 9 oz at her 9mo apt and she is 29 3/4 inches tall!!

She is 10 to 15% but even so my pediatrician said not to worry as her kids were the same...

I have twin girls and at their 9 month checkup they only weighed 15.4 lbs. and 16.8 lbs. Even though they are very petite, my doctor said that they look healthy and they are on a healthy growth curve (the doctor plots their growth on their own chart.) I wouldn't worry about it.

I'd find a new doctor/nurse practitioner if I were you! MY daughter is oh so petite - born April 27th at 7 lbs. 9 oz. she's now only 14 lbs. 4 oz.! SO TEENY! However, she eats well, she poops well, she sleeps well and she's always on the move. Even my doc said that she's really small but as long as all other signs are positive then there's nothing to worry about. Babies come in all shapes and sizes just like us adults.

Well if your son is borderline, then mine is definitely underweight! Except maybe cause she's a girl.... My baby just turned 10 months and seriously, she's under 17 pounds. She's petite and cute and eats like a lion. Don't feel badly about it. Do what you can, they even out, and if they don't by the 12 month visit, you'll know a LOT more! Keep doing your best. It sounds like you are!!! :)

She drinks breast milk, and any/all organic foods that we do. She eats/snacks every two hours, but since she's running around the house, she's just burning it off. Plus, I think she has my husbands Amazing metabolism. Her doctor say's she's in perfect health and has never been sick!

Forget what that nurse said. Everyone's different!

Every baby in my family has always been on the thinner side and still we have grown completely normal size (of course some are also fat) adults so whats the problem...

I can't see that as being underweight. My little boy is 9 months old & when I got him weighed, etc on 30 January, he was 8.1kg but he is 74cm in length, which is quite tall/long (hubbys side of the family) You can't force your baby to eat more than he wants to, every baby is different. I also only give my baby food when he is hungry. Just stay positive. Considering that my baby had a bit of a rough start when he was born, he's doing excellently.

i just recently took my daughter to the doctors and decided to see how much she weighed. turns out she was only 16 pounds 1 ounce and has only gained 2 ounces in three months! i also do the same, feed her when she is hungry, and try to give her more but she will not take it. and she does eat alot. my only advice would be to give snacks in between meals. thats what the doctor suggested to me, he also suggested that she is just small. plain and simple, since it does run in our family...dont know if this helped just thought i would share my experience with you. you are NOT the only one :)

I would consider another health care provider if this one is too pushy or makes you feel uncomfortable. In most cases Mom & Dad know best. After all they see our children a matter of minutes every few months. My son was three weeks early and he weighed in at 18lb 4oz at his 9 month appointment. I always feel nervous when I am told he is only at 20% for weight but his doc, in addition to my MIL (who was a NIC nurse for 30 years, plus mother of 3 herself), tell me not to worry he has a good appetite, is making enough wet/dirty diapers, is meeting all his other developmental milestones, and looks/acts healthy. My son is breastfed and I am told breastfed babies have a tendency to not be "overweight" babies.

All babies are different and grow at thier own rate, chin up momma, your not a bad parent, just wait...someday he wil be bigger than you!

dont worry about it, if you are feeding when hungry then theres nothing more you can do. my daughter's spent most of her time under the second centile and not been able to put much weight on an my health visitor was the same, making me feel c@@p about it but nothing i could do made her put weight on so i just put up with it and did what i could but still having problems with the HV even tho she's in proportion, as they say every baby is different and you can only do your best and go by how your child is not how others act.

good luck and dont let your HV make you feel worthless (tho i know how u feel) parenting is one of the hardest jobs arround lol

I was told the same thing. My son is an eating machine and was 17.2 at his 9 month appointment. People also always commented about him being "skinny", it got me worrying, I ended up looking up my husband and my baby stats.. I was 18lbs even and he was 16.2 at that age, we were always scrawny growing up. So I have a peace now that my son IS getting all he needs and you cant change genetics. I encourage you to look yours up! It will probably set your mind at rest :)

My son was 7lb 8oz at birth. At his 9 month checkup he was 17lb 3oz, the 10% range. His ped is not worried because he has always been in the 10% to 25% for weight. He is 29 in long, 75%. He is active and reaching all of his milestones. The ped also said that he might stop eating as much now as his growth is slowing down. He is not concered and said to offer him meals 3 times a day and pletty of nursing. He will let me know when he is hungry and will not starve himself.

I get the same thing, not from the doctor, but from the nutrionist at wic. She makes me feel like a bad mother. My daughter is 16 lbs 3 oz and in the 15th percentile. She is healthy and active and developmentally advanced. I don't think you should force your children to eat. Is your son breastfed? A lot of times they compare your childs wait to all children that age. That isn't fair because breastfed babies are generally smaller than formula fed. As long as you are offering your child solids at least 3 times a day, they are steadily gaining weight, and generally healthy, don't let it bother you. My daughter has actually starting putting on weight a little faster now that I am letting her self feed. Try that if you haven't yet.

We went in for our daughters 9 month check up and she is 28-1/2" long and weighs 17lb 1oz. She is in the 75% for her height and 45% for her weight which the Dr said is fine because she is eating every 3 hours (5 times a day) and gaining weight and very active.

All children are different and as long as you are feeding him when he is hungry he should be fine.

My son is on the other end of the spectrum- he weighs 29.5 pounds at 9 months old. But also very long. I was worried about him being overweight, but dr. says as long as their eating well, moving, staying active and have proportional weight/height- no worries! I am 6ft. 1in. and my husband is over 6ft.4in. so we knew we'd have a big/long baby...... I wouldn't worry if I were you.

My daughter was not quite 22lbs at her check up. The dr said she's on the high side of growing but according to her birth weight i feel she is correct. Don't let any nurse say anything to hurt your feelings. According to what you're saying you are a good mother so don't worry. Some babies are more active then others. Don't fret

Crystal - posted on 02/06/2010

The big problem is that they have found that when parents try to force their babies to eat, even when they don't want any more, the babies don't learn to stop when they are full later in life. They naturally have a sensor in their brain that says to stop when they are full. But if you try to keep feeding then they learn to ignore that sensor. That is a big reason why we as adults don't know when to stop (not the only reason). If you feel that your baby is too small then take them to a dietician and they can help you make meals that are the right size but have more of what the baby needs for growth. If you feel they are fine and they gain weight at a slower pace and don't stop gaining then don't worry about the nurse or doctor. Maybe even get a second opinion, remeber this person is someone you will rely on for other things and if you don't trust what they say then the realtionship is no good.

Good Luck.

my 9 month old daughter weighs 22.5lbs. the daughter suggested diet but i told her it was against my culture. african babies a suppose to be healthy and it is frowned upon if we have a tiny baby. my child is a happy healthy baby who eats maybe 8oz during the day and 16oz during the night. she is not overfed, she's just naturally healthy. u're not doing anything wrong, it's wonderful not to starve ur child. keep up the good job.

i wouldn't worry about it at all, my little girl is 10 months old and is only 15lb 10 but her health visitor is not in the least worried because she is very tall for her age so she says that balances it out plus she is very active and moves around a lot too so burns off energy, these are the ones who won't have to worry about weight when older, take what they say with pinch of salt as long a sweight goes on and he isn't hungry then its obviously working,if he under weight whats my little girl.
