My baby girl is 9 mos and weighed in at 19.1lbs so very close you baby boy. My MD said she was the perfect weight and that now that she is moving around more she is crawling and standing up by herself now that she wont gain weight as much as she had before. Honestly I think that as long as your baby is healthy, eating well then dont listen to your NP.

Amber, sorry to hear the nurse made you feel inadequate. Sounds like you're doing a great job and anything I've ever read or heard is that babies grow at their own rates and as long as they appear healthy, active and are hitting their milestones all is well. I was concerned that my baby wasn't gaining enough because he was born at 9lbs 11oz in the 100% and is now 20lbs 8oz which is around the 50th percentile. Dr assured me he's healthy and strong and showing no signs of malnutrition. You hang in there and keep being the best mom you can be! If you aren't encouraged by your pediatrician, you may want to consider changing to someone that can support and encourage you to be the best mom you can be instead of judging and belittling you in a negative way. I had to and I'm so thankful that I did.

My nine month old little boy also weighed in at 18 lbs 8 oz, I think he was around in the 20th percentile. The doctor said not to worry because he is now crawling and moving around like crazy and is probably just burning a lot of calories. He eats 3 solid meals a day and breast feeds 3-4 times a day as well as eating at least one snack. Besides both myself and my husband are on the smaller side! Tell the nurse prac to screw herself.

Ok. I've been a nurse for 7 yrs. I worked in both pediatrics & Labor/Delivery. As long as a baby doubles their weight by 6 months, there should be no worries. Doctors/NP like to make comments like that for 2 reasons. 1 - They can say "I told you so" when baby continues to "fail to thrive," or 2 - They get to be the hero that warned you of the potential issue & so they were the reason you noticed it & started to feed baby more. As long as he is making wet diapers & stooling every few days, do not worry about it. He sounds fine. And don't bother trying to force feed him. He'll eat what he needs & not a spoonful more.

Take care!!

well I'm so relieved to see that I'm not the only one with an "underweight" baby. My heart almost stopped beating when i saw she hadn't gained but a couple oz since her 6mo check up :( The Dr kind of scolded me and said to feed her more protien and fatty foods. I can't tell you how horrible I felt!!!

My daughter is 9 1/2 months old and we just took her in for her 9 month appointment. She has only gained 1 lb since her 6 month checkup. She eats breastmilk and also solids. She weighs 15 lbs and 4 oz right now and is in the 2nd percentile for weight. The doctors are attributing this to her high activity now that she's crawling and aren't worried at all. She is a petite little thing and the weight charts at the peds office are ONLY for formula-fed babies, there isn't one for breastfed babies yet, so who knows if the percentile thng is even accurate! She was 7 lbs 9 oz at birth. I'm glad to have a healthy baby and am not worried about this at all. That's just that many more weeks/months we'll get out of her car seat, swing, etc!! :)

I just had my daughter in for her 9 month check up (although she will be 10 mos old in one week) and she weighs in at 17 lbs even and measures 28 inches long. Considering she was a preemie (born at 33 wks weighing 4 lbs 8 oz and 17.5 inches) I think it's great she has caught up and is right in the mix with full term babies.

Like most of the other mothers have said, you know your baby best. Feed according to hunger so there is no added chance of unhealthy eating habits later in life. If your baby is happy and active and not losing weight but showing a steady "trend" of weight gain, than it's more than fine and that nurse is a little more "opinionated" than she should be. Always do your research on weight and milestones before an appt so if this situation comes up again, you can pull "your cards" out and fire right back. Don't be rude, but gracefully defend yourself. I think that if the doc said something and you felt it too in your gut that something wasn't right, that would be one thing. But the mommy's are the drs #1 resource for the care of your child. Maybe you could find another pediatrician office? Remember, THEY work for YOU. Keep on keepin' on girl! Best to you and your baby. =)

My daughter was 9lb,5 oz at birth. At her 9 month appt she was 20 lbs even. She is 75th percentile for weight and 25th percentile for height (26.75 inches). She looks so chubby but is short so there is nowhere for the weight to go.

Don't worry about that nurse. You are doing a great job! As long as your son is eating and steadily gaining weight, he is probably just fine. My niece has been in the 5th-10th percentile since she was about 6 months. She will be 2 years old in a few days. She's tiny but healthy, smart and very active.

My daughter is 9 months old too. I had her in for her check-up last week & she is 16lbs 12oz. When my son was 9 months, he was only 16lbs 3oz. Our doc told us that every child grows at his/her own pace & there is nothing to worry about. My son is now 3 & is still quite small for his age, but he is perfectly healthy. We push the calories with both kids, but they eat what they want & when they want. I'm sure you're doing a great job as a mom. Don't get discouraged & keep your chin up!

At my son's 9 month checkup (he's almost 10 months now) he weighed in at only 17 pounds. The doctor is a little concerned because he seems to have plateaued in his height and weight, but she also commented that he seems happy and healthy and isn't overly concerned. She did ask that I come back in to have him checked at about 10 months to see if he's still gaining. She recommended that I add in some more food, but to aim for high fat foods - like yogurt (YoBaby) and cheese. My son loves these new additions, so it was an easy transition for us. I hope everything works out for you - don't be discouraged!

My son went for his 9 month check up 2 weeks ago and I was told the same thing. He weighed in at 17lbs 13ozs, 27 3/4" long. He was only 6lbs 13ozs when he was born. Oddly everybody that stops us in public talks about how big he is, and his cheeks do look like they could fall off his face. Every baby is different. I feed my son 3 meals a day, snacks in between and still has 5 bottles a day. What more can we do?? Don't worry about it.

My daughter was just under 17 lbs at 9 months and 27 inches. We thought she was too small but asked the doctor and she said she was fine. She is very active and talkative and happy and almost walking and we always offer her lots of food but I agree that you cannot force feed your child. The doctor also said she would rather see her a little on the smaller side than overweight. As long as your baby is happy and healthy and eating then I would not worry too much about it. All babies develop at different rates. And I would request not to have that nurse again if she is going to be so rude.

I wouldn't worry too much. My daughter was always "close to underweight", and she is now 5,thriving, active and healthy. My cousins baby is almost 10 months and only 17 lbs. My 10 month old is a chunker, and he's only 23lbs and a few ounces. If your child is starting to lose weight then I would get worried, but I know many babies that are older than your son and weigh less. Hope this puts your mind at rest a bit!

my son was 7lbs 11oz at birth and at his 9 mo checkup he was 23 lbs 5oz and they said his weight was perfect .. they base it on the build of your baby - not necessarily in comparison to other babies .. my son is a big boy - 29.5 inches long at 9 months so thats why his weight of 23lbs is good for him .. they estimate (based on me and my husbands height) that our son will be about 6'2" at 18 y/o .. so it just depends .. i wouldn't worry too much about it .. unless of course your baby is showing signs of being sick which could affect weight. mommy knows best :)

She also eats like a horse but never sits still she is always crawling about or standing up holding us and jogging about or bouncing or jumping up and down so she just burns it all off. My HV said not to worry and just let her extra fats like cream in sauces or olive oil in pasta or puddings so i do that and let her have raisins or organix crisps for snacks. She has 3 meals a day, often with a pudding, 3 bottles a day and a snack somewhere. Some kids just have fast metabolism. They'd moan if your LO was big too

Dawn is absolutely correct! Outdated growth charts are based on formula & breastfed infants. Exclusively breastfed babies are naturally leaner (and healthier). Here is an explaination of the new growth charts from the World Health Orginazation's website:

"The growth of an infant is strongly linked to how he or she is fed. The nutritional, immunological and growth benefits of breastfeeding have been proven, and so the breastfed infant is the natural standard for physiological growth. The adequacy of human milk to support not only healthy growth but cognitive development and long term health provided a clear rationale for basing the new Standards on breastfed infants.

As a departure, then, from previous growth reference charts used to measure babies and children, the new WHO Child Growth Standards are based on the premise that the breastfed baby is the norm for healthy growth among infants. Until now, existing child growth references were based on infants who were breast and/or artificially fed, but this variable was not controlled for in these early studies.

Because breastfed babies are lean babies, the shape of the curve in the new WHO Child Growth Standards differs from these earlier references, particularly during the first six months of life when growth is rapid."

There, do you feel better now? He is right on according to their growth chart! You are a great mommy for all this worry, but sadly it is unnessacerly caused by uninformed health care providers.

This is the link to the growth chart for boys:

Here is the one for girls:

She said active babies will weigh less. We feed her when she is hungary too. She lets us know when she is full. You are doing a great job. I was worried too about my daughter's weight. As long as the babies are healthy then there really isnt anything to worry about. You are doing nothing wrong he eats when he wants to eat and you are doing what you can. Im sure you are a great mom and there are alot of people out there in the health care field that dont have kids but have a very extreme point of view on how kids should be raised. Kids are all different and they grow at different rates if you are truly concerned request to see a pediatrician but follow your instincts. Your mommy instincts take precident over everyone elses. you know your child best.

He is very active and I feed him as much as he will take. Some time back his doc said she thought he was going to be a slender kid, so I do not worry too much. My son went today for his 9 month check up but he is really 9 and a 1/2 months. He weighed in at 17 lbs 6 oz. I am by no means ready to give him table foods. He just got his 2 top teeth last weekend and has had his 2 bottom. I have been giving him gerber snacks but that is as close as it gets. His doctor says he is underweight. And since he wont eat the baby food meats of ANY kind she said to start giving him yogurt, cooked egg yolks, mac and cheese, or mashed potatoes. Im not sure Im ready but if he needs it, thats what I will do. He eats at least 5 jars of baby food a day, most of which mixed with oatmeal. He had gotten RSV and an ear infection earlier this month so I think it slowed his growth during that time. Keep your head up, cause Im sure tryin' to also.

my little beanie was 17lbs even. Our pediatrician wasn't worried, he said that most babies have a dip in their weight around this time because they're so super active crawling (or trying to crawl). I'd say that as long as he's happy and learning new stuff then don't even worry about it. He'll probably have caught up again by his 12month check up.
