Some babies walk at nine months, other at 18 months. He might be focusing on something else at the moment. You can't really speed up the process. Is he standing up? Cruising around furniture? You encourage him by holding on to his hands and walk with him if he is interested.

My little girl started walking holding onto furniture when she was just over six months old and started walking a week before her birthday, she's a drastically independent child. but i have a friend who had twins. She thinks its weird that her baby girl is excited to walk around and yet her baby boy doesn't have the inclination to stand around the furniture yet. some babies just dont feel the 'rush' to get up and do things that other babies do. They all learn at their own pace and before you know it your baby will be running around

Brenda, I wouldnt worry about now. My oldest son was on time but he didnt start walking til he was 18 months. He was diagonised with Cerbal Palsy at the age of 21 months. My second son started walking when he was about 10 months and my youngest son started walking when he was 13 months. Every kid is different. But I have noticed that when you have older siblings the younger ones seem to start hitting the milestones earlier then the previous kid that you had.

I wouldn't worry, my little girl is 12 months and still is walking, went to the doctor told me not to worry about it. I have 2 nephews one started walking at 14 months and the other at 16 months, and they both 2 happy and healthy boys.

My son was born on the 15th and takes a few steps here and there. I'm not too worried because I know each baby is an individual and will eventually start walking on his own. We should enjoy these last moments before they do start walking. lol

My son Kevryck, born on the 13th, was like a freak of nature. He was walking by December. Now, he climbs on everything including onto a chair to get food off the table as we speak. They'll get there, enjoy the immobility, once they're up, they're gone.

I wish that my little girl would sit still. She is not only walking but running now and driving me nuts getting ino everything. I don't think that you have anything to worry about. If you are really worried and it gets any later than 18 months I would talk to the doctor. Each kid is different, my son walked later than my daughter but he was the first born and she was second and trying to keep up with him. Enjoy the peace for a bit till he learns to walk.

Hi, my LO turned 1 on 19th and has been walking since the end of January, so is now able to run, My LO is my 2nd and my 1st, myself and my husband also all walked at 9 months.
However his cousin (my brother's son) is 4 months older so is now 16 months and still not walking yet so it varies a great deal. His other boys also didn't walk before 1 either. I don't think you need to worry before they get to about 2.

I wouldn't worry. I'm on my third daughter and they have all walked at different times. My first didn't walk until she was 15 months, my 2nd daughter walked at 10 months and now my 13 month old is just beginning to take steps on her own. All kids do things at their own pace. I would only begin to worry if he seems to be in pain or discomfort when trying to walk.

My son turned one on the 8th (of April) and still isn't walking either. He has started to take a couple of steps the past few days but that only happens once or twice s day.
I get abit orried too especially when people make comments that "oh, he's still not walking". But I think they will walk when they are good and ready.
I have heard of babies who walk at 16 months so son't stress. He will walk when he is ready.

Some kids don't even walk until they are 16 months! That was my friends child, but after 16 months he is now walking. He was just scared I think. He could walk fine holding onto our hands, or by himself on furniture but when it came to himself all alone he whimpered and would sit down lol. My son is 13 months and is walking on his hands and feet, who knows when he will actually walk :)

my son turned 1 on the 22nd and has been crawling since 6 months. I thought he'd walk early as he's been cruising since 10 months and standing on his own since 11 months. He can take 5 or 6 steps together but not often, he'd prefer to crawl. It's diiferent for me as my 1st son went from cruising to walking in about 1.5 weeks at 13 months but this one is taking his time. right now, I'm glad his not walking as trying to keep up with a new walker and a 3.5 yr old on a scooter sounds hard to me :)

My son was 1 on the 22nd. Never mind walking he's not even able to stand yet! He can get onto his knees and thats it. He was 2 weeks early and I was induced. I put a lot of it down to the fact that he's a big child (wearing 2-3 tshirts and 18 - 24 pants) and therefore has more weight to haul up so takes longer to build the muscles!

Also don't know if its relevent in this case or not but children that have walkers tend to learn to walk on their own later! The walker teaches them to walk on the tips of their toes and the weight is normally tipped forward which out of the bouncer would have them flat on their faces so they have to readjust when on their own.

According to "What to Expect the First Year," many babies don't walk till well after their 1st birthday and the average is 15 or 16 months (I can't remember which.)

My boys are 13mths (corrcted age 10mths 13 weeks early they were) They are still holding on to things. They cant walk by themselves yet. Caleb can walk along furnishings while holding on. Jacob is just learning to move on his feet. I have been told by a number of docs if my boys dont start walking by 18mths then start to worry. Children pick things up at their own pace. Your little man will start walking when he is ready =)

My son was 3 weeks early, and sick for about the first 5 months of his life. Then he had colic. Now teething issues. He couldn't even roll over until he was 8 month. My doctor thought he was a little delayed, and sent him to a physical therapist. After a month and a half he is now walking on his own. Within that time he began army crawling, crawling on his hands and knees, cruising the furniture, and now walking. It went so fast! Even though we all know that all babies are different, and develop at their own rate; it's still alot to worry about. Especially when you see other kids the same age, or younger flying right by your kid. Your baby will get there when the time is right for him.

My son was also early, 7 weeks early, but started walking a month ago. I'm sure that your son is just taking his time to do it. They do things at their own pace not ours. I know my other two were complete opposite of each other. Michael was born late, and walked at 9 months. James walked at 14 months. Yours will be walking in no time.

Don't worry :) My daughter was almost 15 months old before she started walking & the doctor said he doesn't worry until they get past 18 months if they're not walking. My son on the other hand, who turned 1 on April 19th, has been walking for almost 2 months. All kids are different. :)

I totally agree. All children are different and all 3 of mine certainly are. My son (nearly 5) walked just under 11 months but wasn't properly steady till 15 months, my elder daughter didn't crawl till she was 11 months or walk till nearly 15m but took off straight away. Whereas my younger daughter walked 3 days before her first birthday (and crawled on Christmas Day so I think she likes momentous occasions for her milestones!).

You only need to worry if they're not even thinking about it at 17/18m - remember, the numbers in the books/magazines are average. There have to be extremes at either end to give the average!

Enjoy the fact that you can put him down and he's still there when you turn round! Certainly by the time you've had 3, you want them to stay still as long as possible!

My baby turned 1 on the 11th April and she's not walking yet either. I wouldn't worry, all babies develop at different stages. I can confidently say that I can wait. She's getting into everything as it is. lol My daughter can pull herself up into a standing position and can take a few steps whilst holding on, around the furniture. Am sure it wont be long before she begins to walk. My mother-in-law told me that she put her son in shorts because he kept putting holes in his trousers from crawling. She said that it wasn't long after that he started to walk. Not sure if it's an old wives tale!

My son turned one on April 24th. He was 11 weeks early. I saw that there are a few mom's on this post with early babies. Don't worry. Your baby will walk in due time. My son doesn't walk either. He pulls himself up some, but hasn't started cruising. He'll walk when we hold his hands up or in his walker(walks backwards mostly in it.) or when he plays with his ride on/stand up car. His doctor says he is wonderfully healthy and on track for a preemie baby. The one thing he refuses to do is crawl. He will try, then gets frustrated and cries out to get picked up.

She doesn't crawl either but just scoots around on her bum and drags her knees along so she can get to where she wants to go lol...We had the one year health check recently and the health visitor said as long as they are up on their feet by 18 months there is nothing to worry about...so hopefully they'll do it in theor own time when they want to......just enjoy the last few weeks of them staying and sitting where you put them lol

Hi my little boy was one on 14th April and he started to walk at the end of February @ 10and a half months . He was a really lazy baby not crawling or sitting until 9 months and then he just decided it wasnt quick enough. BUY A DOOR BOUNCER. My little boy was very underweight and struggled to gain weight, and was very weak, but after buying a door bouncer in January after 6 weeks in it about 30 mins per day he was walking. Try a door bouncer as it helps them strengthen their legs and balance. It worked for me. Rather than do the full 30 mins at once break it up during the day to 2 or 3 sessions. Please let me know if this helps.

My younger daughter turned 1 on the 10th and she has been walking (quite wobbly) for a while. My other daughter though did not walk until she was 17 months and now at 5 she is incredibly athletic and coordinated, more than any of her peers. Everybody is different and walking early or late is no sign of anything.

my daughter was one on the 10th April, and she only started crawling at 11 months, she's pulling herself up on things like the lounge and the side of her cot but no walking yet, she wants to though you can see her try. She was 4 weeks early, and she is actually quite a smart baby. She understands alot of things and she will talk to me, as if i'm understanding what she's saying, she has full conversations with me n baby talk. and when she wakes up you hear her on the side of her cot yelling out MUUUUUUMMMM!!! I wouldn't be too worried either, i started getting a bit worried after 10 months of not crawling but you could tell she was trying, she's been sitting up since 4 months and scooting around on her bum but there was no crawling what so ever until 11 months. Every baby developes differently. I didn't start walking til i was 16 months, and there is nothing wrong with my motor skills. :)

My little girl was one on the 11th April, she isn't walking unaided yet or cruising around the furniture. She walks well holding on to two fingers but when I tried just holding one hand she really panicked and couldn't do it. She is no where near stable enough on her feet to walk yet so I just have to be patient and wait until she's ready. I do find it a little frustrating as everyone in my family walked at 10/11 months so presumed she'd be the same but hubby didn't walk until 18mths so guess she's taking after him. She will do it when she's ready and I appreciate her other skills like talking and singing nursery rhymes while doing the actions!

No worries, my daughter was on time and doesn't walk yet. She just turned one on the fifteenth, even though I started walking around 9 months. I think she just figures that there are other ways she can get around, lol. She'll cruise on furniture and take a few steps if we hold both her hands, but that's it.

Also, since he was six weeks early, he will seem to develop slower than others his age. When a baby is born notably early, more than a week or two, usually, then they take about that much longer for things to happen developmentally. ^.^

The average age for a baby to start walking is 14 months, but every baby is different and will develop at their own pace.
As you've noticed from the other mother's comments, most of their babies aren't walking yet either.

My son was born on the 22nd of April and he started walking at 11 months, talking at 8 months.
Some babies just start early. All you can do is encourage him, but don't worry about it. He will walk when he is ready :)

All babies develop differently. When it comes to walking it's hereditary. If you or your spouse was a late walker your child will be too. My friend's children didn't start til almost 18 months. My husband and I both started walking at 11 months so our son ended up walking at 11 months.

It is normal for kids to wait until as long as 18M so that would be 6weeks from his due date. Just because the average kid walks around one does not mean he is not normal because he is not walking.

My daughter started walking a week before she turned 9months but her little friend who is one month exactly younger than her still is not walking and he turns one on saturday. It is different for every kid.
