Hitting Mom at bed time

I am in real need of some guidance here. At bedtime we have our routine and it works really well for us. Recently, my 2 yr old son started slapping my face and chest repeatedly after we finish reading books and turn out the light. I firmly tell him, "No hitting. Hitting hurts." and tell him if he does it again he's going right to bed with no cuddles. EVERY time he does it again. So I put him in bed, skipping the rest of our routine, & leave the room. This does upset him some, but he's not stopping. I don't feel it's a good time to do a time out, since we've just spent all this time getting him to relax & get ready for bed. Any ideas of things I can try?

maybe bedtime/sleep is causing some anxiety for him these days. we never really know what is going on in their little minds. he is learning and processing so much every day. maybe he needs those snuggles more than ever. just let him know that you much prefer his gentle hands .. stroke his face and his hair and let him do the same to you. show him the behaviour you want to see; he'll get it. and he'll still get the cuddly mom time he needs.
