Hi, my son James is 8 months old and loves his food. I get comments all the time that "he's in a good paddock" or " He's not fading away" and my dad is always saying he needs to lose some weight and that he is too fat. I get quite upset at these comments and think that he is just a nice chubby baby. He weighs 10.5kg (23.2 lb) and is 75cm long (29.5inches) what do you think is too fat for a baby or is there no such thing as too fat until they are a bit older?

My 2nd son weighed 25 lbs 6 oz @ 8 months old and I was told to back off the cereal because he was too heavy. He had a lot of wheezing due to being too heavy. I remember it made me soo made when people told me he was too heavy.m I thought he was just a little chubby! Looking back now @ his baby pictures its sad because he was too heavy it caused him to be delayed hitting his milestones. Today he is almost 3 and weighs 37 lbs 7 oz and is 40 inches tall. He is about 94% for weight and95% for his height too me and everyone else except the ped dr thinks he looks skinny. Don't worry they thin out as the get older my son is living proof

My baby is almost the exact weight and height as yours. He was only 7 lbs 7 oz at birth but he gained weight rapidly and the doctors stayed on me for a little while but they haven't said anything anymore. He's crawling now so maybe he'll lose some. Either way a chubby baby is a cute baby

Thanks everyone for your comments, James has been quite sick for nearly 7 weeks now, starting with a vomiting bug and then a cold and then ear and throat infection which got complications and he has been on two courses of antibiotics and had fevers up to 40degrees celcius. He just developed a rash two days ago and seems to be on the mend finally! After all that he has lost quite a bit of weight and I am glad he had the extra on him so he is still an ok weight. If he had been slim to start with we would have had trouble as he hasnt been eating well for a while and not sleeping well either. That is why babies need some extra padding, for times like this!

My daughter, who will be 2 in February, only weighs 26lbs. She's not skinny, she's actually above average on the growth chart for her age. Eating habits start early. What you are teaching your child now is how they will want to eat for the rest of their lives. Don't doom your child by feeding him constantly!

Not at all. My twins are 8 months old when they were born they were 5 lbs 10 oz and 4 lbs 11 oz. They are now 22lbs and 21lbs. All my kids have been chunky monkey's as we call them. But no I don't think he's fat by any means!!

Tell your dad he sucks your little guy is the perfect weight for his hight and boys always eat more. Just monitor his food don't give him anything high in fat or empty carbs. He's gonna eat what he wants to eat. I am no doctor and if he is even the slightest bit over weight he will out grow it. Almost all babies are chub ba bubbas. Thats y they call it baby fat haha

My son is 24 lbs and 28 inches long and i dont think he is fat at all.. He takes after my brother inlaw he is 18 and 6'5 and 200 lbs I just think he is going to be just like him. I dont think you need to worry.. at this age all the food is for brain development.

As long as the doctor says he is in a certain percentile that is good for his age, he should be fine. When they start moving around more, they work up an appetite so even though he maybe eating more, he is active and will work it off! It is hard not to listen to peoples comments, especially people that are close to you, but try not to let it get to you. (I know it is easier said than done and I should take my own advice but sometimes people do not know when to stop talking!!)

my wee girl is way off the plunket chart, she turned 8 months old yesterday, weighs nearly 11kg and is 78cm tall - she has no trouble eating, no trouble sleeping and is always a happy, content little girl. As far as i am concerned, there is nothing wrong with her and more than likely, she is just going to be a tall, solid teenager/woman when she is older like my side of the family where there are no females shorter than 5'9"

I think that if your baby was too fat your doctor would tell you so, otherwise he is just fine. I worry that my daughter is too thin, she is 17 lbs 5oz and 28 in long. Besides, when James starts crawling and walking(which he may already be) he will start to lose weight and slim up which is very normal. so just enjoy him and his chubbyness and tell your dad to losen up a bit...

Thanks for the comments, I think my dad is worried because my husband and his family all struggle with weight a bit and he is just concerned that my son dosnt have the same problem. I am happy with my bubs weight and Im not going to hesitate to tell people that he is a happy healthy boy! Thanks mums!

If your pediatrician thinks he is healthy, I would not worry about it. I know some friends' children used to be very big when they were infants, but now they grew up as tall and slender little kids.

How is a baby suppose to lose weight? Come on! Most babies do lose weight once they start walking . I get a lot of comments also and it drives me crazy. But i get them comparing my 2 sons. I have a two and a half year old who is small and only weighs 26 pounds and then my 7 month old weighs 20 pounds. Which just shows how different each child is. My son's doctor is happy with his weight and says he is healthy and that is all that matters. Also if your dads says something about his weight every time you see him, and you get upset I would say something to him. I finally had to tell my mom , that yes Travis is a little chubby but he is healthy and happy and that is all that matters.

Usually a baby will grow into any 'additional' fat they have. It's normal for all babies to be different. My guy is long and lean and everyone thinks he's too skinny, when he is perfectly healthy!

Babies should never be put on diets of any kind. Ask your doctor about it, and tell people that you appreciate their concern, but that you know what is best for YOUR baby. I know if it is family members, it's hard to put boundaries, but you might have to. Better than feeling insecure or upset about the comments.

As he gets older, if he stays really chubby (as in, a few years old) ask the doctor if that is normal, and make sure he eats nutritious foods. :D

Some babies are just big. My older son was the same size as your little guy & they usually slim out when they start crawling and/or walking. As long as he's eating nutritious foods I wouldn't worry about it. Next time you take him to the Dr. ask the Dr. about your concerns. My Dr told me that "chubby babies" are usually healthier. My 8 month old is in the 80% for height & weight & he was 9lbs.2oz. when he was born. My older son was always in the high 90's% & he's 13 now & is still that way. Don't let people make you feel bad about your babies weight, babies are supposed to be chubby!
