How many naps a day does your 17 Month old take?

We have an odd schedule since his father and I work opposite shifts... He wakes up about 9:30 a.m., naps at about 1:00 p.m for about 2 1/2 hours, and then goes to bed at 10 p.m. He used to have 2 naps, but he was really cranky after his second nap, so we eliminated it and it seems to work great. Sometimes if we're driving he'll take a second nap. I think each kid is different though, I'm sure that it's normal. We had to lay down with him to get him to nap for longer than an hour, so maybe try laying down to nap together? It might be worth a shot!

My daughter used to have 2 naps a day as well. she's now decided she only needs one. She goes to bed no later then 8:30pm if It can he helped and she gets up at 9am or sometimes 10am. I put her down for her nap around 1:30pm, 2pm. She'll sleep for a hour or sometimes more. If it's only a hour then bedtime comes at 7:30pm, 8pm.

When my little guy is teething the day time naps seem to be a lot shorter but he sleeps well at night. Now he is just napping once a day. I put him in his crib around 1pm everyday he usually sleeps but if he doesn't sleep right away I still leave him there for some quiet time and usually in about 20 mintues he is sleeping. But I know some kids who just stopped naps all together. Every child is totally different.

My 17 month old refuses to nap as well and it leads to tantrums in the later afternoon. So what I have been trying is just reading him a book and then putting him down in bed. He usually cries for 10 min or so but then he sleeps for an hour to 3 hours his naps are also later in the afternoon like 2:00. I am thinking this is just a phase but I am trying to incorporate night time routines since he goes to bed at night without a fuss. I hope he gets to napping soon.

My baby girl used to take two 1:30 naps, but has now full switched to one nap a day (she goes down right after lunch). But the thing is, she only sleeps for about an hour and a half still... but she seems rested and isnt cranky through the day. I think some kids just need a little less sleep than others? She goes to bed at 7:30pm and gets up around 7am

Sorry to disappoint you, but I think your son is getting into the place where naps will be few and in between. My daughter is 17mths and rarely takes an afternoon nap. When she does is for less than an hour. It is stress full but I suggest you do something that may wear him out. like an early library day or park or even a good play cession. Feed him, Give him a bathe and he would not be able to keep his eyes open. 2 hours will be the least he sleeps for. It works for my daughter.

My son only takes one nap a day because he started only napping a hour twice a day. Now.he naps from 12-330 and he.is fine for the rest of the day n night.

My little one will be 17 mos old next week. She went down to one nap a day when she was just 13 months old. We started figuring that she was fighting her mid-morning nap (used to be around 10:30am) because she simply wasn't tired yet anymore. Instead we initiated a snack at that time, then pushed off her nap to 11:30am...sometimes she'd need a short afternoon nap then but we gradually just pushed her morning nap by about 15 minutes every 3 days or so until her snack time became her lunch at 11:00am and her one per day nap was at 12:15/12:30pm. She has always been a very active girl, walking at 9months, etc., so that may also be part of why she might be ahead of the game on dropping to one nap per day - not sure.
Here's our regular schedule right now - it might help you graduate to something like this as he may just not need two naps anymore:
8am breakfast/11am lunch/12:30pm nap - gets up by around 2:30pm/snack at 2:30 or 3pm/Dinner at 5:45 or 6pm/Bedtime routine around 7:30/7:45 and asleep by 8pm. We also don't get her up immediately in the morning or after her nap. She tends to like to talk and play in her crib for around 20-30 minutes.
I hope this helps! I know how it is having to figure out each new stage, just when you feel you have a good routine going! LOL I guess we all have a long road ahead of such things :)

My 17 month has only been taking 1 nap for about 6 months now. Her 1 nap is about 2 hours long and she is sleeping 12 hours or more at night. My 32 month old stopped taking naps all together around 24 months.

My baby is almost 17 months and has changed to one sleep a day around midday. He will sleep anywhere from an hour to three hours- on a rare day. I have also worked in child care for years and Know that all bubs will change their sleep routine at different times and sleep for different lengths of time. If you think it is teething, give him something cool to chew on. He may just be starting to get older and wanting to be a big boy now.

My daughter went through this too, but it was a phase. I just kept laying her down as usual and eventually she went back to her normal schedule. Also, when she really didn't want to nap, we would have quiet time- I would bring her to lay with me in our bed and we would cuddle with stuffed animals, read a book and I would rub her back. Most of the time, she would end up falling asleep, but even when she didn't, she got a little rest.

My son is also 17 months and has recently started only taking one nap a day. Also, my oldest started taking one nap a day when he was about 17 months. But if you can him to start taking two naps again maybe try laying him down with classical music or something soothing... Good Luck! Hope that helps.

For two or three months now, my LO has been taking only one nap a day. Every once in a while, it's only an hour; but mostly, it will be two to two-and-a-half hours. When he starts to get sleepy mid-morning, I give him his snack then to re-energize him for a couple more hours so he can take this one nap in the afternoon. Otherwise, if he sleeps for an hour in the morning, he will want another nap around 4 or 5:00 and that pushes back his bedtime even later--right now it's about 10:00 every night! Working on moving that up.

my daughter had been going through the same thing recently so i just would keep her up in the mornings and do things like take a walk or go grocery shopping and by the time she'd been awake about 4-5 hours she was definitely ready for a nap....and now her 1 nap a day is 3 and sometimes 4 hours!

My 17 month old only takes one nap a day now too and it is usually in the afternoon anywhere from 1 - 3 2 hour nap I do not let him take a nap any time after 330 cause I found out that it is harder to put him down at night but every baby is different maybe yours has just decided he isn't wanting to take naps or it could be teething I know when Isaac is teething he to doesn't sleep well!!! My 17 month-old daughter ALTOGETHER quit napping during the day about three weeks ago. She just will not sleep.
She goes to bed at 7.30pm and wakes up at around 6.30am. Those 11 hours at night are the sum of her sleeping over 24 hours.
(Prior to this "phase", she used to do just one hourly nap a day)
She considers herself too busy to doze, unfortunately.

Eric sleeps 10-11 hours at night and 2-3 hours for one nap. Nap is from 11ish until 1 or 2ish.
Normal range is 12-14 hours total for 1-2 year olds.

My son is 17 months too and he will either take one or two naps depending on the day and how he slept the night before. One way to get them to take another nap if they are tired is to put them in the car seat. Sam usually falls asleep in the car if he is still tired.

My 17 month old son onlt has one nap a day, lasting an hour. Mind you he never was a big napper, it used to be two naps a day lasting an hour from quite a young age

Hi, my daughter will be 17 months in a few days & she has been having 1 sleep a day for about 6 months now. On the odd occasion she will have 2. she normally sleeps anywhere from 2 to 4 hrs in the middle of the day. then bed time around 7.30/8 & she sleeps right thru til about 7.

my little boy has one nap a day he goes down at about half 11 and usually wakes up about half 1 or 2 o clock, if he sleeps any shorter hes a nightmare lol especially when im tired from seeing to my 10 week old :-( he did start going through a stage where he would only sleep for an hour but has settled back in to his long nap now i guess you just have to go with it and wait to see what routine he will settle into

My son Christian goes to bed around 7.00pm, wakes up at 6.00-7.00am, and goes back to bed around 9.00am for about two hours. That is it for the day. My older son used to have two naps at this age, until he was 2 1/2, but they are all different! Christian does sometime nod off in the buggy on the way to the school to collect Lawrence. I would like him to have another nap, too, but he won't sleep in his cot in the afternoon. Funny, isn't it. They are set to challenge us!

My 16 month old usually takes both naps, but sometimes he doesn't feel like going down for the morning one. So I still give him quiet play time in his room during that nap time. He enjoys that and it gives me some time to get things done.

My son goes to daycare Monday through Friday. During those days he only takes one long nap. On the weekend he takes 2 short naps. He goes to bed at 9pm every night. I would love for him to go to bed earlier, but he won't sleep through he night.

Hi Amanda im Nakita my son Jordan is just about 17moths and he only has 1 nap a day he usualy sleeps for around a couple of hours, he goes to bed around 7 or 8 and wakes up at 9 the next day, it will get easier just hang in there you are doing a great job!!

My son will be 17 months in a few days and he only takes one nap during the day. Sometimes he will sleep for an hour or sometimes he only sleeps for 40 minutes. It varies from day to day really.

My son is 17 month and also takes one nap a day...it seems as if he is transitioning from 2 naps but he normally doesn't get grumpy but isn't as easy to please. He is a easy kid but would be nice to have a longer break with a nap! I would say give it time...Myles sometimes will sit with me and watch a cartoon like Yo Gabba Gabba or something similar for a little bit and just that little rest seems to reboot him.

My 17 month old takes 1 nap. My pediatrician suggested I switch him from 2 naps to 1 afternoon nap at 15 months. It took awhile for both of us to adjust, but now he happily naps every day at 1:00 for about 2 hours.

Thanks everyone I guess my son is not the only one going through this..But it gets really frustrating though as long as he's up I can't get nothing done..When he was taking 2 naps a day he still went to sleep at 8 clock every night now since he does 1 nap I've been putting him to bed earlier about 7:30 cause he gets so tired and destructive

My 17 month old takes 1 nap from 12:30-3pm. Sometimes he gets up and plays a little and then gets back in his bed but I close the door and don't go in until 3 unless he's crying. When I first cut out the morning nap a couple months ago he was used to sleeping about an hour 2 times a day so he would only sleep about an hour but after a few days to a week he started sleeping longer stretches. Once he figures out that he's only going to get 1 nap he should start sleeping longer. Now I have a whole 2 1/2 hours every afternoon which is much better than the 2 hour breaks I had with 2 naps so I'm loving the 1 nap a day for him. He goes to bed about 7:30-8pm and sleeps till about 7-7:30am.

My 17 mth old started taking just one nap at about 11 mths. At first he was really grissly but over time he got used to it. He has one nap at about 12noon for about 1 1/2 - 2 hours. He also sleeps for 12 hours at night. I think they say a child of that ages should on average have about 12-14 hours sleep a day. So i guess it depends on how long he is sleeping at night.

My DD is 17months and has been doing one nap since she was 12-13months old. she goes to sleep at 12ish usually for 2.5 to 3 hours and then back in bed at 7pm to 7am.... if he wakes up after one hour try putting him to bed 15minutes later the next day as he might be in the transition of only doing one sleep. to be honest just go with what works best for you both. Hope he gets better soon

My daughter was only sleeping for 1hr if that during the day, then putting herself to bed by 7pm, but she would wake during the night, she now has 2 days sleeps, each sleep anywhere from 1 -2 hours each and she is still ready for bed at 7pm. Each child is different, as long as you are reading their tired cues, you can't go wrong, there is a reason kids don't come with a manual. Good Luck everyone, I too am pregnant with my 3rd, 4mths along and also have a 30mth old son who no longer naps through the day, so I hear you about being tired. I just love bed time though!

I've been struggling with my daughter who seems to be doing the EXACT same thing. She seems to go back and forth between taking one or two naps a day. But, whenever she takes two naps she has trouble going to sleep at bedtime, 8PM. She started having trouble even taking her nap, so I moved her nap back later by an hour so that she goes to sleep at noon. She sleeps for an hour and 45 minutes. This one nap doesn't always seem like quite enough and she gets cranky, so I've been letting her bounce back and forth between one or two depending on her moods. It makes it tough to make plans, but a cranky baby ruins them, too! lol. It's really just guesswork sometimes. It's really frustrating when you're wrong, but I'm sure you now how to read your son best! Good luck.

at 13 months my son decided he was going to one nap a day. It worked out good and is still that way now (he is 16 months now). He sometimes will take a 30 min nap, or even up to 3 hours in the middle of the day. If he is really grumpy and tired then i do his bed time routine early and then the next day he is back on track with a longer nap in the mid day.

My son takes one nap a day usually. The length depends on how tired he is and if he's sick. He also goes to bed pretty early and wakes up early. By early, I mean in bed by 8 or 8:30 and up by about 7:30, which is early in comparison to my daughter who likes to stay up until past 10 and sleep until 9 or 10. Little things can upset sleep schedules, but they will eventually work themselves out. Good luck.

My son is almost 17 months and used to sleep 2 hours every day. Usually from 11-1. Now he also has decided that he only wants an hour sleep and wakes up sooo grumpy! And stays grumpy all day! I keep trying to put him to bed again throughout the afternoon but he just screams. i just think i can't force him to sleep and i'm very thankful he is in bed and asleep at 6 every night! I am pregnant too and sooo tired in the afternoon i would love it so much if he would let me have a sleep as well!

My son has no problems falling asleep at night..He goes to bed at 8 every night he was on a schedule for his naps to same time every day for Morning & afternoon naps than he quit but he has no problems falling asleep at night he just refuses his naps

My son is almost 17mo. For a few mo now he's been taking one nap during the day. He wakes up around 6:30-7 and naps around 11 for about 1-2 hours. Now, if he naps earlier than that and wakes up from his nap early, hes usually pretty cranky throughtout the day and he takes another nap sometimes in his chair during dinner! lol. But every child is different, there could be different reasons, teething, he's going through a change, you just have to try different things. I know a schedule is good and being consistent. Not saying he should nap every day at 1 p.m but around the time you think he's getting tired. So every day around that time rock him, sing whatever works, he might be fussy but eventually he will know that hey, this is my nap time and i'm tired so I'll give it up and go to sleep:) Then hopefully you'll know his patterens and will be better with trying to know what's going on with him. But I know consistency is the key! For sure! I put my son to bed every night at 8. We change diaper, brush teeth I put his music on and he knows its bed time and theres no fuss. Even if we are at an event or if people are over for visiting. Same time every night. Once in a great while I let him stay up a little bit, but being consistent is the key.

It depends on what time my little girl wakes up, whether I take her swimming, how active she is generally and if she's teething or ill. She may need a 15 - 30 minute power nap / quiet time about 3 hours after waking and then 1 1/2 hours in the afternoon when we go swimming, otherwise it's a single 1-2 hour nap in the middle of the day. She's worse when my mum or husband look after her cos they miss the cues that she's tired and needs a nap :(

If my daughter does wake up obviously tired, I find a little cuddle and quiet time will help recharge her batteries! Good luck.x
