How many naps does your 1 year old take during the day? And how long are the naps? My little guy still takes 2 naps, should he only be taking 1?

Our daughter also seems to be in transition. One day she's happy till after lunch, then wants an early afternoon nap, and the next day she's rubbing eyes at 11:00 and then needs a pick-me-up nap again at 4:00. It's tough to plan anything because we don't know what kind of nap-day she'll have on any given day anymore.

My daughter just turned a year old on the 14th. She has been down to 1 nap for a while but, recently has been wanting two again. I think you should let them sleep when they want as long as it doesnt mess up bedtime.

Abby usually naps twice a day, but will sometimes have a third nap still, depending on how long her naps are. She's never been a good day napper, was always 3 times 30 minute naps. And she doesn't sleep throughout the night yet either. Although she is randomly giving me a longer afternoon nap, today was almost 2 1/2 hours!! So unheard of! I never know what project or clean up I can start though if it's something I need to start and finish in the same go! Her morning nap is almost always within 2 2/12 hours from the time she gets up. I'm just letting her nap when she wants to.

From experience with my oldest child whose 5 and reading books, usu. a child will drop down to one nap sometime between 12 months and 18 months. Every child is different though. My daughter didn't drop one of her naps till almost 19 months, while my one year old son now seems to be leaning toward the one nap already. Just follow your little guys cues and if he needs the naps and goes down nicely for them, by all means go with it. Who doesn't love two naps:) You'll know when he's ready when he starts staying up longer, not crabby and he starts shortening one of the naps. Then he's probably ready for one long afternoon nap after lunch. Hope he keeps sleeping!

My bub turned one in April and has gone down to 1 nap of about 3 hours after lunch. There was about a 1 month transition period. This has happened sooner than I thought. She has finally learnt to sleep through the night (YAYE!) and in total will have between 13-15 hours sleep a day. The only day that she has less day sleep is when she is in daycare - i think she is too much of a busy-body to sleep. Let your baby guide you.

Hi Sonya, sleep is detrimental to their growth and development. My 12 month old still has a morning and afternoon sleep lasting from an hour - two hours depending on how tired she is. She has also slept 12hrs a night since she was 2months old. Every baby's sleep needs are unique. The more stimulated they are the more exhausted they will be.

A trip, illness or new baby are some examples that could cause temporary setbacks.

My 14yr old would still love to have two naps a day, lol.

My son is 1 and he still needs his 2 naps per day. He usually goes down in the morning after being awake for only 2 hrs, then he takes his afternoon nap around 3. He is just now starting to fight his naps though, even though he is obviously tired. But we are working through it & I have had to learn not to give in so easily.

now I am a stay home mom so we have a routine that works for us. my little boy usually goes to bed at 8ish at night and wakes up around at 8 in the morning. He normally takes 2 naps a day, the first one in the late morning btwn 11 -12 and the second one in btwn 4:30 to 530. it seems like he still needs two naps a day to play and enjoy the day with me :) however I don't know when the transition will come to us yet.

Mine either takes one big nap in the middle of the day (for about an hour) or two short naps (about 20 mins) one in the morning, one in the afternoon.
One year-olds are very active, and they're still growing quickly, so don't worry if your little guy needs two naps instead of one. Two naps isn't an excessive amount of sleep, all his exploring is just tiring him out. :)

My 13 month old takes 1 or 2 naps per day, depending on the day, each are anywhere form 30 minutes to 2 hrs. Its normal, they still need 13-16 hrs of sleep so I wouldn't worry. There will be a day when you wish he would take a nap at all! :)

The first nap is around 10:#0 am and the second nap is later afternoon around 2 pm. ON days that he goes to daycare he only takes his morning nap, he is too distracted at daycare to nap.

He goest o bed for the night around 7:30-8pm and sleeps till about 7 am the next day, this has been like this for at least 6 months... :)

It's nice to hear my one year ols daughter (on April 26th) is in limbo as well between one or two naps a day. Glad it's normal and my (sometimes) frustration at planning anything during the day. I have learned (just have to accept) that my days really do revolve around her and her moods. It's much easier, less stressful and she certainly seems to prefer it that way. Good luck!

My son just turned 1 on 4/25 and on most days he still has two naps. One is usually in the mid morning and the other one early-mid afternoon. The length of each varies but he almost always has a total of 3 hours of nap time a day. If by chance, for one reason or another, he only has one nap he'll go to bed early at night and sleep for an extra hour or two. It's almost like his body knows that it HAS to have a total of 13 hours a day and makes sure that it gets it in one way or another.

My baby girl turned 1 on the 8th. She is still having two naps but they are getting shorter. She usually has about 45mins in the morning (2 hours after she gets up) and then about 1 1/2 hours at about 1.30ish. But like so many others have said each day is different at the moment. I did worry for a while that she should only be having 1 sleep and tried to encourage that but have decided I will let her determine how much she needs - not me :)

My son turned one on the 8th of April, and he is still on two naps a day. He has two 1 1/2 hour naps. I thought we had to go down to one nap by now, but he clearly needs the second one too so I'm just going with what he wants/needs. But in saying that, all kids are different. Just have to see what they want and go with that.
I do agree with Jenny though, when they shorten one nap I think it's probably time to drop down to one nap a day.

Mine turned one on April 15th, She wakes up every day between 6-7am takes a 1 hour or so nap mid morning, then a 1-1.5 hour nap mid afternoon. If she wakes up later in the am around 8ish then she will usually take one nap from like noon to 2pm, which is pretty sufficient till bed time 7-8pm. I think she is getting ready to go to one nap a day.

My son turned 1 on 4-18 and still takes two naps a day. Morning one is always 1 1/2- 2 hrs. and the second is around 3 or 4 in the afternoon, and I make sure he doesn't sleep passed 5:30 otherwise it messes his bedtime up. I tried dropping his second nap, but he couldn't seem to take one long nap. It works for us. Do what works for you, you'll know when he's ready for one nap.

We are in the transition at our house. My son takes a long nap from 10-12:00 and he gets tired and cranky again at 3:00. Some days he will nap another 45 minutes other days he throws a huge fit for as long as he is in his crib.

My first took 2 naps up until she was about 17-18 months, My 2nd cut out that 2nd nap at like 10 onths and I hate it! She was napping really bad, like 1hr a day, she's getting better, I can usually get at least 1.5 hrs. out of her now, but the last few days 2 hrs so maybe she's starting a trend (i hope) if he is still taking 2 let him, you'll notice when they are ready. When Adriana went from 2-1 she would still take the 1 st but would really fight the 2nd one so I eventually started making her first one later and later that nap wasn't always real long but eventually she got used to just one and she is still sleeping 2+ hrs.

we are having a tough time too - Betha is just over 1 and is still taking 2 naps most days, but they vary quite wildly in time and duration. She used to be like clockwork, 45 mins at 9 and 1-2 hours at 1. But in the last 4 or 5 weeks she has us guessing like mad! Some days she is down at 9.45 or so for 2 hours, others at 9 for just 30 mins. The afternoon is the same, an hour at 1 or 2 hours at 3 - who knows! Bedtime has also changed from 6pm to about 7 or 7.30 - and dont even get me started on what time she will get up! anything from 5 :( . iam hoping she settles back into a routine soon as we are shattered!

if your child is tired and needs a nap then let them nap .

My daughter turned 1 on April 18. She USUALLY takes 2 naps: the 1st sometime between 9 & 10 and then after lunch between 1:30-2:30. Although, she is fine if we have errands or appts and she misses her morning nap, she'll eat lunch then take a little bit longer of an afternoon nap. Right now she is cutting 4 1st year molars and is having a rough time sleeping at night, a whole other story.

I know some babies who only take 1 nap now and they are around a year.. I think it all depends on the baby.. mine seems happy with two and I'll just watch him to see when he's fed up with 2 and just wants 1....

We are currently in limbo -- which is exhausting. My daughter typically takes 2 naps, but recently acts like she's ready for just 1 -- but then she totally changes her mind and goes back to 3! The guessing game isn't so fun.
I figure that I'll let her sleep when she wants to sleep. Having an overtired baby is the worst thing on the planet (in my opinion) and I'd rather let my plans for the day get put on hold so she can take a nap. She's also not much of a day time sleeper as far as length -- a max of an hour. I wish she'd sleep for longer, but oh well. Thankfully, she sleeps between 11-12 hrs at night so I guess she makes up for it.
