babies at this age do not self feed completely...it is best to start them off on finger foods..i give my son foods like pieces of cheddar cheese, toast, organic rice cakes for babies, puff corn, banana and things like that. i still feed him his food but by giving ure baby finger foods as the above they will learn to feed themselves. Good luck ;))))

Mine only self feeds crackers and cookies, i give her mum-mum crakers from walmart they just melt in her mouth so i don't have to worry about her choking. she dosen't reach for her spoon when i'm feeding her sometimes she will grab my hand and pull to her mouth but that is as close as it gets to self feeding.

My son would put everything but food in his mouth until about 3 weeks ago. Now he eats finger foods on his own. I was worried, but one day he will try it and like it and do it again.

My daughter refuses to eat pureed baby foods... I started with cherrios, but sometimes they're too small if they haven't gotten the "pinch" yet. But there are like, baby puffs by Gerber and they are easy to pick up, oh and the biter biscuits, my daughter loves those! Thats how she learned, now we're on to toast, pasta, veggies, and meats!

Try giving the baby his own spoon at dinnertime? While he has his spoon to play with and chew on, you can be sneaking bites in with your own spoon.
Keep giving him lots of yummy stuff that he can pick up on his own. Maybe even share his snack with him, let him see YOU picking up the pieces carefully and seeing YOU guide them to YOUR mouth.
Monkey see, monkey do :-p

Its hard to get her to eat anything she doesn't feed herself. She had the puffs and yogurt melts but it wasn't untill I started giving her peas, green beans, peaches in little diced pieces that she started to shove the food in her mouth.

My son started self-feeding at 7 months when we introduced finger foods. He loves the Gerber graduates puffs, lil crunchies, and yogurt bites. Have you introduced finger foods like these to your baby yet? The bite size pieces are perfect for helping baby develop those fine motor skills. My son grabs at the food, picks it up with his little pinchers, and it took him a couple days to learn how to aim for and put it in his mouth. Now he is a pro, and yells when there is no more food left on his tray.
Good luck, it is a fun and exciting age!

My baby doesn't either. I'm not worried about it. Sometimes I let him play with the spoon and such...it's messy but how else will they learn.
