severe late term vomiting (Hyperemesis gravidarum) or as people who don't understand call it 'morning sickness'. 6 months and it's just getting worse.

this is my 3rd pregnancy. i had a rare liver disorder called ICP with my first pregnancy, it was awful, and it also has serious still birth risks. 2nd pregnancy no major disorders, but had post partum issues (bled for 9 months post partum). now i've had sever morning sickness since. it went away for a few weeks but then returned. some days i throw up 5 or 6 times by 7am. other days i just feel nauseated all day long. i'm fearful it has something to do with my previous liver problem. the OB ran some tests yesterday, waiting for results. the nurse seemed to be alarmed that i'm still so sick, said it could be my kidneys, or it could be 'stress'. i don't know but it's ruling my life!!!! one day i'm ok, next i'm housebound. i've spoken to a couple other people who said they had it until the day they gave birth. has anyone else had this? I know it's called HG (Hyperemesis gravidarum is a severe type of vomiting of pregnancy which has got deleterious effect on the health of the mother and incapacitates her in day to day activities.) I was prescribed some anti nausea medication, sometimes it helps sometimes i throw up as soon as it's in my mouth. and the medication has risks of stroke! I have gained weight, so that's not an issue right now. i have a high calorie high fiber etc. protein smoothie every morning to make sure i get nutrition.

help! anyone that can relate or know more about it or what is going on? my ob is not helpful (my beloved OB just moved out of state and now i'm stuck with a temporary replacement who seems clueless in general).

thanks for all the advice! two weeks ago i was in the hospital (bleeding) and they said i was so dehydrated they would IV me if i couldn't keep down some water, that day i had been so sick all day i couldn't even keep ONE SIP of water down until 6pm. i was losing my mind and getting severly depressed because of being so dehydrated. yesterday i was ONE POUND over my starting pregnancy weight, but my baby is 'on target' for growth so that's all that really matters. i'm now 32 weeks pregnant, on two different meds, but still throwing up at least 3 days a week, anywhere from once a day to 5 times a day. some days i'm fine. some days a bad thought or a strange odor or even just waking up will set me off, and it's so violent i puke up stomach acid and usually pee my pants. i've tried every single tip and thing i could, and just when i think 'ureka, i've found it!' i end up vomiting again and my 'solution' turns out to have been just 'luck', i guess! i've spoken to two other people who said their's did not end until the day after they gave birth! i'm having some other issues so now this is one of my smaller problems, but annoying nontheless. also taking pepcid ad now and that seems to help, since anything i can keep down gives me heartburn and the heartburn makes me puke. i wanted to be chemical free for my baby but now i'm taking 5 different meds! i sure hope she's healthy when she comes out! i'm also having contractions so i have to keep laying down, which makes me get heartburn. can't wait to have my tubes tied and to have this baby in my arms to smile at and start having this pregnancy as just 'a bad memory'.... my 20 month old son cries everytime he sees me puke so it's also upsetting for him and my 7 year old to see me like this.

oh... boy - i don't have personal experience with this - but a coworker who just went through this did.  It sounds like some of you are taking pill meds for this?  her doctor prescribed and intraveneous medication (not sure what - i know... Helpful right?)  and she carried around a relatively discrete pumping/battery pack that administered the drug through the iv.

And for her there really wasn't any one food that was better or worse.   Although I do believe she because eating everything eventually.

She was ill for over 6 months - it eventually got better-  but never went away until birth.  WIth the iv/PICC line with the meds - she was able to work and eat and gain weight.  Her doc was very happy with the progress.

Good luck and i feel so badly for you that are going through that.  no fun at all

And another thing you can do too is eat peppermints before you even get out of bed. That helped me also when I had the morning sickness going on! before I go out of bed I would put a peppermint in my mouth and suck on it for a minute, then I would get out of bed very slow, because then you won't get the dizzness and the nausea.

I don't know if this will help you or not but I know it helped me in the beginning of this pregnancy!! They are the motion sickness acupuncture wrist band. (I hope I spelled it right) They sell them at the pharmacy or at like walmart or target. They aren't expensive. I have used them for the first 5 months of my pregnancy, the doctors told me that they were fine to use. You can try that to see if they work for you are not!! It won't hurt but to try!!!

Yes!! I had this with my first pregnancy and also this time around. With my first, the DR told me there was nothing I could do and so I threw up every day ALL day up and til the 6th month. Awful. She said it was normal. This time, I got a wonderful doctor who gave me meds. I had to take the max amount and I still felt like crap, but at least I wasnt throwing up all day. Only once a day a few times a week. This one lasted til the 6th month as well. I tried the cracker, lolipop etc thing and nothing helped, it was just pure misery the first time around. This time wasnt so bad and I had my little boy to cheer me. It is nice to know that I wasnt alone in this, Ive never heard of anyone else. But I had a very healthy baby, so at least it didnt affect him. :)

Thanks for the advice! I hope it stops soon too!!! I will definitely look into it. Are the headaches really severe though. Just having a headache makes me nausea's. I just feel like these last months are going to feel like forever! Hell it already does feel like I have been pregnant for an eternity. I just can't wait any more, wish I had a choice! LOL

i should also mention that the anti nausea meds give me a terrible headache, and make you sleepy. so even though the OB said to take it consistently, you can't if you need to drive places and do things, and i also have a handicapped grandmother i need to do things for, so i need to drive. but there are times i take it and not get a headache or sleepy. and unisom, a sleeping aid, is supposed to help, but it kept making me too groogy in the morning. the nurse told me to just take half and it would help the nausea and help me get better sleep, but so far, it hasn't. in fact the last two days have been the worst. but it's probably just my personal reaction, you might not get the side effects i do.

oh, forgot to tell you, my previous OB prescribed me ondansetron, a chemotherapy patient drug to help calm nausea. only thing is, you have to let it melt on your tongue, and the taste would usually make me vomit right there. you also need to take it before you get nauseated, when i take it while i'm nauseated it usually doesn't work. the OB told my yesterday to take it when i go to bed so that i won't throw up in the morning. but, this drug has serious risks like stroke, so i don't want to take it if i don't know that i'll really need to! you might want to ask about this if you want to try.

i hope it stops soon for you, too! every month the doctor would say 'this will end soon' but there's no end in sight! i had much, much worse problems with my first pregnancy. so terrible that it took me 5 years to even consider getting pregnant again. my kids are 7, and 19 months. At least I'm at home with the little one, if I had to work I'd be fired by now because there's days i'm stuck within running distance from the toilet for hours!!! you know! thanks for letting me vent!

thank you alisa for your reply. the nausea isn't as bad as it once was, for months i could only eat yogurt and bread because even the smell of other things would set me off. then it went away for about a month and then 3 weeks ago the vomiting came back. my mom lost twins because her kidneys shut down, she went into a coma, so i am very afraid after yesterday at the OB they started saying that they were really concerned about me and that it is NOT 'normal' to still be so very sick, i wake up at 4am and puke. that 'you're having a healthy baby' wives tale stuff is just that, wives tales. HG is actually very dangerous. so far the smoothies have been a life saver, i put bananas, whey protein powder, almonds, yogurt, wheat germ, ice and other fruit, sometimes peanut butter. so at least i get my nutrition that way, and i keep gaining weight, which they seem to keep wanting to be sure i'm doing. and my other two kids LOVE having their smoothie in the morning with me! it just sucks on the days when i can't even keep the smoothie down. and i'm so tired of people saying 'oh, morning sickness, i had that too' when they have NO IDEA what i'm going through. i thought i had morning sickness with my second pregnancy, now that i've been through this i know that was NOTHING in comparison! i know i should just be happy my baby is ok, and that i don't have the life threatening ICP i did with my first pregnancy, but still, when your life is dominated by 'can i move from here to there without throwing up?' and i have to cancel appointments because i can't leave the house, it's hard not to whine a little. oh, and i'd love to 'get out' but i could not even walk for 10 of 12 months last year, my hip dislocated so i am not able to do exercise other than my weekly Physical therapy and pilates, plus it's really cold where i live. boo hoo. can you tell i'm having a blue day?

I am severely sick as well. Have been since the sixth week. I get sick anywhere from 2 to 8 times a day and more occasionally. I even wake up choking at night because I am getting sick. I figured out in the fifth month that milk was a big cause of the majority of me being sick. Even ice cream will cause me to be severely sick for a couple days. Is there any chance that you could have food allergies? Watch what it is your eating on the days when you are worse... My mother says as long as you try to keep the food down for at least 20 minutes you are getting some of the nutrients out of it. LOL I found that the more I am active and out of the house the less I get sick. Go for a walk, shopping, any thing to get out. My doctors have been no help either. They are actually happy that I am so sick because it means that I am going to have a healthy baby. Some pregnancies you have more HGC than others and I guess that is a good thing. My regular doctor prescribed me Zantac... for the horrible heartburn that has come along with getting sick so much. It works miracles and is safe for the babe. If you have kidney problems I am sure that you know to make sure you are drinking tons of water (which can cause heartburn to due to the chemicals) or cranberry juice. You do not want to get dehydrated for both you and the baby. It can actually reduce the amniotic fluid if you do and cause a kidney infection to get worse. I would just make sure that you check your temperature often to make sure it's not a kidney infection. There are some things that help a bit, pregnancy teas, peppermint (but not a lot), ginger lollipops, or ginger any thing, and of course crackers because of the salt. Watch out that you aren't retaining water weight if you do the salt thing! Best of luck! This is my first and I am hating it! I can't have this child fast enough!!!
