Transitioning from breastmilk to formula

My son has been strictly breastfed up until now. We've just started weaning him with one formula bottle a day last week (Enfamil Lipil). At first we thought he was doing well, he takes the bottle very well, but we've noticed that he has been VERY gassy lately. The gas is making him fussy and even Mylicon doesn't always help. Also, his farts have gotten WAY stinkier and he went from pooping about 2-4 times a day to going only every other day. Is this typical? Do you think I should try a different formula?

My sister in law mixed the formula with water then filled the rest of the bottle with breast milk. So for his first bottles switching to formula she would take one ounce of water with half a scoop of formula and mix it together. Then fill up the other 3 ounces of the bottle with breast milk

Thanks ladies, your advice is helpful. Just a quick question about mixing the formula w/ my breastmilk... Do you use breastmilk in place of water or mix the formula with water then add my milk to that?

When I transitioned my oldest from breastmilk to formula, I would mix the breastmilk and formula. For instance, if I was giving her a 6 oz bottle, at first I'd do 2/3 breastmilk, 1/3 formula for a while. Then I'd switch it to 1/3 breastmilk, 2/3 formula. It seemed to work better than just giving her a bottle of just formula. She could still taste the breastmilk, so we was more likely to drink it all.



Your son's body is just getting used to the switch. Breastmilk is much easier on a baby's digestive tract than formula, so the gas and BM's are just a result of his body digesting something different. From what I've read, a formula-fed baby should poop about once every 2-4 days.

My nephew is strictly breastfed and they are also trying to switch him to formula now. What they do is take about an ounce of formula mixed in with the breastmilk and gradually add more and more formula to his bottles as the days go by to get him used to it. Also, my son has always been on formula and he only has a poopy diaper every two or three days so I think that is pretty typical for formula babies... nothing to worry about there :] Him being gassy could just be his body trying to get used to the formula. I just started my son on rice cereal and he has been much more gassy because of it. I think it just takes a little adjusting! Hope this was helpful!

I started to supplement with formula, but still nurse my daughter. She will get @ 2-3 bottles a day otherwise i still nurse her. One thing is that with a bottle, there is more air, so the gas is inevitable. Not to mention the stinker diapers!! Are you feeding him solids now too? That will get his lil poops down. As far as switching you could try one that is gentle for his lil tummy like Enfamil Gentlease. But try not to switch up formulas too much that will upset his tummy too. Hope something works for you and your lil man, he is a cutie!!!
