Return of the Monthly Present

Its been 6 months and I breastfeed exclusively so I figured it'd be about time for me to be getting my period again as that's what the pamphlet I got from the hospital told me. Yet it still hasn't returned. I've taken multiple pregnancy tests, generally a couple weeks apart, in the morning all of which have said negative. Has anyone else had this problem, without of course being pregnant, or when did you start back on a cycle?

Usually if you go for 5 hours at a time without breastfeeding your period should return, but if not it's probably just hormones from breastfeeding are a little stronger for you then some other people. I would just be glad for not having to deal with it. I don't think you are pregnant if the tests keep coming back negative. Consult your doctor if you are worried about it.

I got mine back very early but it was irregular for a long time. Some months I had it some months not some months really early or kind of late.

I am soo envious of all the moms who don't get theirs until they are done breastfeeding!

I had my baby girl 6months ago and had my 1st 'present' after 1 month of her being born -but I was told it's different for all women sum cum back straight away others can be present free for over a year ... Ask your doctor for contraception pills if it worries you as thy will make you regular again but then it's th hassle of pills gd luck :) x

Bad pamphlet. Every woman is different... and the average is about 14 or 15 months... I remember because I hit that after my first pg and laughed at me being exactly normal. I'm hoping for the same this time... if it starts before I'll deal with it.. if its later then extra time w/out isn't going to upset me lol. Some women don't get it until they wean!

My baby is 6.5 months and I breastfeed and no period! Thank the Lord! My sister has three children all breastfed too and she said that she didn't get her period until she was done breastfeeding

My grandmother knows from personal experience that you CAN get pregnant while breast-feeding...

My lactation consultant told me that periods are likely to not return if your baby eats every two to three hours-especially from the beginning. If your baby goes four or five hours without eating tho, it's likely to return soon. I exclusively breast fed and I got my first period when my son was five months old.

just relax and be glad ;) nothings wrong, you just haven't got your period yet. if you are b/feeding & dont want to be pregnant yet and are having unprotected sex, perhaps try the mini-pill. my baby is seven months and i jst got my period again grr, was really enjoying not having it haha

I've been on birth control for 4 months, stopped breast-feeding 3 months ago (I never really had any milk), and I haven't had a period yet. I know I'm not pregnant. I'm calling the doctor on Monday because I am worried about it! I had one period 6 months after my 1st was born, but then I got pregnant again right after that. I did have a difficult pregnancy this time, so I wonder if that has anything to do with it.

I got mine back this week! :( So wasn't looking forward to it! My daughter is 6 1/2 mo old and I'm still breast feeding. My friend on the other hand has a son the same age and has already started weening him but still hasn't gotten hers. My doctor says everyone is different and not to worry.

the majority of women breastfeeding dont get their periods back until they start weaning... of course there are those women who break the rule, n get them back early and they are the ones who would fall pregnant whilst breastfeeding, but for most its an effective contraception...officially known as lactation amenorrhoea method - or LAM... utilised alot in 3rd world and developing countries,,, its not fool proof... u have to be breastfeeding every 4-6hrs and not skipping feeds... but in general most women dont menstrate til weaning...

Mine can back while I was nursing my son, he was around 14mths. I was still nursing my daughter when I got pregnanat - she was 17mths, I had a very light period when she was 16mths. My 3rd son is 6 1/2mths and it has not come back, I expect to have at least another 6 + mths free (hopefully)

I also have the same "problem" -- over six months and no period -- breastfeeding too -- glad to know it's not abnormal! A few times I have had menstrual-like cramping, very mild, but no period.

My first was 8 months when I got mine back. It was when I dropped from 4 feeds a day to 3. I still haven't had mine back from my 6 and a half month old now.
I have heard of women not getting their period back until they drop feeding altogether at over a year.
Don't stress, doesn't mean your pregnant, just enjoy! I'd be happy not to get mine back for a while :)

I have not yet had mine return yet either. My daughter just turned 6 months today (on the 27th). With my son who is now 2 1/2 It came back right away and I exclusively bf both of them. I guess your body just responds differently to each kids.

My baby is almost 6 1/2 months old and no period yet, but she still breastfeeds almost exclusively- just started eating solids a few weeks ago, and doesn't eat much yet.

I nursed my son (now 3yo) for almost 16 months (though we gave bedtime - and occassional daytime - formula bottles as well) and my period didn't come back for 10 months (from his birth date, of course)! It was SO much fun not having to worry about pads etc while trying to get used to being a new mom that first time around for so long :)

I'm now nursing my daughter (6-1/2 mo) and still haven't gotten my period back either.

I'm looking down the barrel of 7 months and still no return....for us lucky ones, sometimes the monthly present doesn't return until you start to wean and your hormones change. Don't stress - enjoy it!! :)

It is typical to not have a period while nursing. I wouldn't worry about it at all.

My daughter is 6 months today, Sunday and have been breastfeeding exclusively but I got mine back when she was 2 months. I was quite depressed coz I'd been hoping it wouldnt come for awhile.
Maybe I would have been worried like you are if it still hadn't shown by now but dont worry, it will show up for sure(as long as you dont get pregnant again). But if you are really worried, you can talk to your dr.
Now, my flow is very little little.....of course I'm worried. :) We women must worry about every little thing.

my son was 6 months thursday and i havent gotten my period either so i guess we are in the same predicament and i have too taken several pregnancy tests in the morning and im not pregnant i guess it might be the breastfeeding and the birth control cause i think thats why i havent gotten mine.

I breastfeed my DD and she was sleeping through the night at 3 weeks, started solids at 4 1/2 months, so I figured it would have come back by now, but she's now 6 1/2 months and still yet to start. Some women don't get it back until they completely wean, and some not long after they give birth. It's different with every person. My mom didn't get a period between my brother and I, and we're 22 1/2 months apart, so that means she would have gotten pregnant with me around when my brother was 12 months.
