I kept having problems with getting son to sleep at night. It turns out that the problem is that he won`t sleep on his back. I have done all the reading and I know they say that babies shouldn`t be sleeping on their tummy`s but that`s the only way that I can get him to sleep! Has anyone else had this problem?

Hey Crystal, If ur worried about son sleeping on his tummy u should purchase this monitor called angelcare movement and sound monitor, It helps dtect if the baby stops breathing etc. I have a friend who purchased it cus her son was a belly sleeper. Hope that helps and goodluck

My babies have been sleeping peacefully through the night on their tummies for 5 months now. I believe ever baby is different. Once they start rolling over we really can't control how they sleep.

My doctor said that if they roll to there stomach it's fine because if they can roll to there stomach they can roll back. My 4 month old loves sleeping on her belly...given I don't get any sleep when she does, but she's happy so I give up my sleep so she can have some :)

My 14 week old daughter is the EXSACT same way. I would lay her on her back and if it wasnt right away, about 5-10min later she would start going off. I would even make sure i had her fast asleep before I had layed her down and she would wake up and cry. I finally tried putting her on her tummy while I was getting dressed one day & when I went to check on her she was fast asleep. My mom actually tried it at night and I was sooo nervous and scared, I dont even think I slept, but she finally got a good night rest :) Ive gotten used to it now though but she is deffently a tummy sleeper. She rolls over and can hold herself up so im really not worried anymore. I have woken up many times where she has actually rolled over on her side to sleep. But again like everone says, YOU are the mommy, no one else so go with YOUR instincts

I have a thought?.. If it is "SUDDEN INFANT DEATH".. and the autopsys done dont show that the baby suffocated.. why do they say that thats the main cause?!? I dont think it has anything to do with that at all.. In my opinion, if a baby is gonna die, its gonna die.. :( (GOD FORBID!!!)

my daughter rarely will go to sleep on her back. I find I have to let her fall fully asleep on her tummy and then flip her onto her back. At times I just say forget it your staying on your tummy. She is still in her bassinet in my bed room so I am able to check on her easily. She is 3.5 months and has almost total head control and picks her self up when having tummy time roles over and is now trying to sit up. I know she is much happier on her tummy.

I had the same problem. She's been holding her head up steady from 4 weeks on so I let her sleep on her belly. My doctor told me the same thing about SIDS but he said as long as she's able to lift herself up she should be fine.

i never thought to sleep my girl on her tummy until my mum did it at 3 weeks. We have a constint battle of wind and tummy aches so she sleeps on a wheet pack on her tummy. This works well but im still to scared to do night sleeps like this, even with her great head control. So of a night time she sleeps on her side.

Hey, my little girl is now 10 weeks & has slept on her tummy since birth. She would not sleep anyother way.....she also sleeps on a pillow as my son did & will not sleep straight on a mattress or bed. She screams in her car seat & wont sleep as she is on her back!!! have had the doc check her & we cant see any problems, so i can fully understand where you are coming from. Just listen to your baby they will tell you what they want.

My dauhgter is ten weeks old and she ONLY sleeps on her tummy too!!! At first I stayed awake for hours watching her while she slept in that position, because of the S.I.D.S myth - but I can asure you she is fine, and perfectly capable of turning her head from side to side and lifting her head all by herself without the threat of suffocating herself. I was really worried, just as you are, but after confiding in my mom about this 'tummy sleeping phenomina' - she took out my baby album and guess what? I was sleeping on my tummy in all the photos, and hey I'm still here :)

My second baby had reflux so bad, she WOULD NOT sleep on her back after 4weeks. My mother put her on her tummy, and she slept and slept. I was a wreck about it until I got a movement sensor. Sounds an alarm when there is no movement for 20 seconds. For me, best invention EVER! You can purchase them at several places, here is a link to look into for more info if interested.

Yes my daughter is the exact same way she refuses to sleep on her back. She will cry until shes on her stomach. As long as you listen for your son when he starts moving around and crying you should have no problems. Just make sure nothing is covering his face or near it so he doesn't suffocate. I have had her sleeping on her tummy since I brought her home from the hospital.

My son has slept on his tummy since he was 3 weeks old - he has terrible acid reflux and it was the only way he wouldn't scream all night! LOL He has very good head control, so I try not to worry too much...

my son flaps his arms alot while on his back and doesn't sleep long; he prefers his tummy, but for my sanity we compromise on his side. he definitely sleeps longest on his tummy though, but he is a strong lad with stunning neck control for his age.
Do follow your instinct and be comfortable with your decision.

YES! my daughter will not sleep on her back, so her doc gave the ok to put her on her tummy as long as its a hard mattress and nothing soft near her face... she sleeps like a dream now

Yes I had the same problem with both my boys. I know they say they shouldn't sleep on their tummy but as long as he can turn his head it should be okay.My oldest boy is 2 now. The youngest is 11 weeks. I tried swaddling but he can wriggle out (even if I do it tight). He kept hitting himself in the face and would wake up again. Neither me nor him would get enough sleep that way so I turned him on his stomach and now he sleeps 7/8 hours at night. I know sleeping on his back is good for him but so is sleep and I had to make a choice so I choose letting him sleep on his stomach. It was the same with my older son. I spoke to my mum about it and it seems that when I was a baby she was told that babies had to sleep on their stomach and so I slept the same way as my sons.Good to know I'm not the only one who had that problem. Thanks for sharing!

My 8 week old daughter Katie is exactly the same. It takes her ages to settle on her back and will only sleep for about half an hour, but when she's on her tummy she'll sleep for 3-4 hrs!
The Health Visitor tells me that threy strobgly recommend that babies are put to sleep on their backs but I'm goinhg with my instincts. My daughter is able to move her head whilst on her tummy so I don't feel that she's in any danger.
Go with your gut instincts and good luck xxx

Back to sleep is fine, but sometimes like with reflux, ear problems they need to be on their bellies it comforts them. Use a pacifier if he'll take it. I have 5 kids, my 4 older ones all on their bellies and my baby is doing it now. All it took was once falling asleep with tummy time for them to realize it was more comfy! lol I don't use blankets, i make sure the sheets are nice and tight and they had binkies. I had a friend who had a baby die of sids. that baby was on her back all the time, had a pacifier did all the right things and still passed away. If it's going to happen it could happen when you are holding them. So do what is comfortable for you with some safeguards. oh a fan in teh room even on low is good too. keeps the air from getting to hot.

My son sleeps on his side most of the time but my opinion is this - all our mothers had us sleeping on our stomachs as babies. It used to be the way they were told to do it, and here we all are! SIDS is definitely a concern but I think if you are checking on your baby and you make sure there aren't a bunch of blankets or stuffed animals for him to suffocate on, there's not much of a risk.

Yes, my daughter sleeps better on her tummy. And i agree with sabrina, if he can lift his head and turn it side from side, he will be fine. I got four kids and ALL of them slept on their tummy!!

My 7 week old daughter loves to sleep on her tummy. She'll sleep on her back overnight, but she takes better naps on her tummy. I'm always nervouse because of all the talk of SIDS, so I constantly check on her.

My little guy prefers his tummy too, so we do it at naps while I'm up and watching him. But at night I swaddle him and put him on his side. And he does well with that, sleeps all night. But he wouldn't sleep on his back without being swaddled. I'm too afraid to put him on his tummy at night. If something happened, I could never live with myself. Even with great head control.

OH! Girl yes! i know how you feel i have twin girls and i went to pick them up from my moms house and she had them sleep on their tummys i was really upset about this ( i didnt say anything to my mom though) but she said they had been sleep for at least 2 hrs i could never get them to sleep for more than maybe 30 min at any given time so that night my husband and i tried it and they slept all night ( of course i was scared out of my mind and i couldnt sleep but they slept and now we put them on their tummys every night. i still get up to check them like 20x's but they are always sleeping well(snoring even.. (lol) so just give it a try.... hay if your not comfortable you can always go back to what you feel comfortable with. good luck!

I've had this issue with all three kids. With my first two I never slept because I was too afraid to put them on thier stomachs and they wouldn't sleep on thier backs! My daughter now prefers to sleep on her stomach, and if she falls asleep on my chest like that I will let her nap in her playpen with me checking on her constantly on her stomach. At night though I'm still a little too nervous for that, so I place her on her side, and that seems to be a good compromise for us. She sleeps longer at a time that way than totally on her back. Go with your instincts and do what works best for you and your baby!

i had the same problem but since my little guy is such a heavy breather and can move his head, I opted to allow him to sleep on his stomach. I removed the bumper to allow more air flow and keep the ceiling fan on at all times. I must admit, I checked him often but have become comfortable with the approach. He is now 9 weeks and sleeps on both his back and stomach. Trust your instincts and do what is best for both you and your child. Good luck!

they say that it can cause s.i.d.s. Sudden infant death syndrome.but I was talking to my speech therapist for my 2 year old today about sleeping on the tummy and she said if your baby is clearing his air way lifting his head up when on his tummy then it is fine. my 9 year old slept on his tummy and so did both of her kids.So if he can left that head up no problem.
