Throwing up after rice cereal

My daughter is just about 6 months old and I have started her on Rice Cereal.
She spits most of it out, but does eat a little bit. After she eats and has had a bottle, she throws up the entire bottle of formula. This happens whether or not I give her cereal or formula first.

Does anybody know what this means?

My sons cheeks got a rash on his face after rice cereal, and then started to vomit after squash. It's just a sensitivity. Try something else and then the rice again in a few months. (I switched him straight to veggies and he did fine.) Also what kind of formula are you using? because their was a recall of Similac do to impurities that could cause stomach issues. So I would check that first.

My daughter wanted nothing to do with rice cereal she gagged everytime I fed it to her. I then tried Cream of Wheat and she handled it much better. Have you maybe tried mixing it with a little bit of baby food?

Maybe give her the rice cereal then wait 1 hour before you give her the bottle even though she might eat a little bit, this might be enough for her stomach and giving her a bottle on top might be the reason she throws up. It takes longer for her to digest the food and her stomach is still very small. you can also try mixing a little bit of rice cereal through her formula milk and start that way. That is what seemed to work for both my sons. Good luck and I hope this helps.

Maybe you should give her less formula. I would cut her bottle in half, and then see how she does. If she still spits it up try her on oatmeal.

Everyone has responded well and given you much of the same advice. Lots of moms seem to have this issue with the rice cereal. As they have suggested switch to oatmeal but even better make your own instead of the store bought version that includes so many other things in order to preserve the food. Just take the oatmeal you buy for yourself and either process it in a food processor uncooked or cook then blend. If you do the uncooked version boil some water first add the oat powder to the water and remove from heat. It will have a thicker consistency than the store bought version so you will need a lot less when feeding your baby. Lots of tips and tricks such as these can be found on Urbanma.com.

iv got 2 out of 3 with allergies, both of my girls cant with stand the powders used in foods, id give the vege n the fruit first then eventually try your usual rice when at that bigger chewing stage rather than the baby rice, your instinct i usually right, good luck xx

I would take her off the rice cereal and try something else b/c its obviously not doing well with her. My little guy didnt take to the rice cereal either so I tried the oatmeal and that sat better. Obviously a little at a time until they get used to the texture (I made it more liquidy at first). I did that for about 2 weeks-- Now I add a bit of fruit to it to give it more flavor and introduce new things. He has been doing well. Every new thing seems to take a few days for him to actually like and eat comfortably.

I would try a little bit of oatmeal and see how she takes to it, if shes reacting well...then after a few days, increase quantity and possibly add a fruit (my guy went to apple 1st) to interest her more. Now its a daily routine and I think he looks forward to it. Hope this helps :)

My daughter can't handle rice cereal either. I give it to her with breastmilk and she spend the rest of the night throwing up...like bad scary gagging to get it all out. It's happened twice so I've just tried giving her tastes of sweet potatoes to get her used to the spoon instead. She's gained so well that I'm waiting to really start with food until after her next checkup.

I am thinking that she isn't ready. She was 5 lbs 9 oz at birth and weights 13 lbs now.. I am wondering if her weight has anything to do with it. She is a teeny tiny little thing. Eats her formula like a champ. Now it all comes back up. Going to take her off of solids and go on in to see the doctor! Thank you for all your info!

She is probably sensitive to it. try another food first. My 2 year old was the same way. Every time I gave her anything with rice in it she spat up. She did well with sweet potatoes and eventually got over the rice issue.

Maybe the Rice with the formula is to heavy for her stomach. Try just giving her the rice by itself. Also my niece and nephew didn't digest the rice well, they needed oatmeal cereal. But my daughter uses rice and not oatmeal. So maybe you can try another cereal and it will set with her better. Hope this helps!
