Hi, I just joined. Been an Army mom for 17 years now, *13 active He is currently on his 2nd deployment, First was Iraq in 2002 and now he is in Kuwait or at least stationed there but drives trucks into Iraq. He joined in high school in 1992 and was 82nd Airborne. The war was in Saudi at the time and he was still considered a vet of that war as he was delayed entery enlistment but could be called up at any time. He did not however have to serve overseas at that time. After 2yrs in he returned home and for 4yrs worked and went to college. He then returned to Army Reserve to fulfill his 8yr agreement with Uncle Sam. He has reinlisted twice since then.

When his daughter was 6 mos old, he went to Iraq and drove semi's on "the road"

Although he does not discuss what happened over there, every now and then, things are mentioned that in time add up. He was there for only 3 mos when his wife took ill and he came home. He did not speak to family for 6 mos. The hardest time of my life.

He was later divorced and he and his wife tried to work things out by going for counseling. He was diagnosed as Mild Post War Syndrome. He was helped by this and I felt he was getting along better and seem fairly happy again. He was then redeployed in Mar of this year. He and his ex did not make it but he found a new person in his life and when he came home this Sept they got married. He seems very happy now but I worry because most of their relationship is via telephone, facebook, etc. I believe this deployment is much better on him as the war in Iraq is not as bad as it was the first time. He felt lonely and deserted then. Now, technology has caught up with our boys and girls over there and they have cell phones, internet, skype etc to keep in close contact with loved ones at home. IT IS WONDERFUL to hear our phone ring and IT S HIM. AND......we both use Alltel with no roaming charges and we both have local numbers in which we are family/friends no charges. SOOOOOO I talk to him in Kuwait for free! When he was at Fort Bragg in 1992 for 2 years I did not see a phone bill under $250 a month. Keep the faith Moms, most of our boys are coming home safe. I am not delusional so I will not say ALL. I just put his safety in God's hands. That is the best any mother can do.

Hello All! Poud and Fearful that is how I answer the question that is asked of me daily! My oldest son is in Iraq for his second tour on the same day that he left for Iraq my middle son went to basic training in Ft. Jackson. My youngest son will leave for basic training next June 23rd. Proud but fearful is all that I feel. I read a few of the posts and I realized that I am not the only mom out there who is proud and fearful. I will keep each of your sons and or daughters in my prayers!

Good morning Military Moms! I haven't written on here since May when we were doing our countdown for my sons 15 day R&R leave. He came home the middle of July and believe me, he didn't have a moment to breathe...lol. As soon as he stepped off that plane, his only request was for Hooter's wings and a beer...GO FIGURE...lol. There was a group of about 50 people (family, friends, bystanders) at the airport awaiting his arrival and nobody could imagine how Proud I was when absolute strangers walked up to him and shook his hand, thanked him, Mom's who hugged him and little children who just wanted to touch his uniform. I have experienced this before but I get a bigger lump in my throat with each time. As much as Matt was happy to be home for those 15 days, he was also happy to get back to his unit in Afghanistan and complete their mission. My only piece of advice when they come home for R&R is to not have something planned for everyday. Most of the plans my daughter-in-law had made, fell through and as I told her for the next time he comes home, "the best made plans are no plans at all". He was actually exausted when he left here to go back...lol. I'm thinking and praying for all your sons and daughters who are serving.

Hi, Lisa. My name is Sharon and I just joined this community. Saw your post and thought I would respond as a "been there, done that, got the tee shirt" mom! My son is a US Army Captain currently stationed at Ft Hood, TX but was in Iraq for 15 months with the 3d ID out of Benning from Mar 07 until May 08. I am happy to report that he returned safe and sound, in body and mind, and I survived! Also have to tell you that it was the longest 15 months of my life. Being an Army (military) mom is not easy, but he has been military-bound since he could walk, and has my 100% support. He is already tentatively scheduled to go back in Nov '10, so am dreading that, but he loves what he does, so he continues to have my support. I pray that your son will have a safe deployment. I don't have any sage wisdom to share with you to help you get through this time, but I know prayer helped me. May God bless you and your family during this difficult time, and please pass on my thanks to your son for his service. The majority of Americans appreciate and support what he does for us, and I am just one of them!

My son is @ Fort Bliss, TX now, deploying to Afghanistan in August. He's with USAR 447th MP Co. I know I'll worry the entire time until he's back at home safe.

All of our troops, including quite a few of his friends from school, are in my thoughts always. He joined the Army Reserve in March '08 @ 17, graduated in June, and has been in "officially" since Aug. '08. 8/31 is his birthday and this is the 2nd year he won't been home :(

Be very proud of your soldiers. They give up everything and ask nothing in return for their country. They are my heroes.

Yes it is hard. This is the 2nd time my son has been over there. I think it was harder for his wife this time because of her being pregnant. They have tried so long to have this baby but she finally got here last Thursday all pink and healthy.

My son enlisted in June '07 with 100% of my support...even knowing we were in a war that has raged on for 8 years now, and knowing he would be deployed at some point. Well, that day came Janauary 29,2009. He is in Khowst, Afghanistan for one year but does get a 2 week leave this July and then will report back the rest of the deployment. He reports that he loves his job so much that he has gone ahead and re-enlisted and already has another deployment date for next April. The hardest thing is that he just got married last July and all he truly wants right now is to hold his wife, and give his Momma a big hug and kiss...lol. The easiest way for us to communicate with him is through Yahoo Messenger. He reports that is is safer to talk that way. He is actually 10 hours ahead of us so when I get on the computer at 8 in the morning, it is already 6 at night there. He has been putting the most amazing pictures up on his MySpace page and they are so incredible, it's like you are actually standing right there with him. He shoots all the cannons and big guns...and a Paratrooper as well...he always like that stuff growing up. One thing we have all had to promise him is that when we do talk to him on the computer that we do not do a countdown to when he will be home for those 2 weeks in July. He says that is the worst thing in the world for all of them over there. Their days are long and hard enough....his shifts are 24 on and 24 off but he has decided to volunteer on some shifts just to get 36 hours in and keep his mind off of being home. I just know that once I see him and touch him for those 2 weeks in July, it will make the rest of the 4 months after that alot easier until he comes home in January. My daughter-in-law sends him 2 care packages A DAY! AND, she has him growing a garden right outside his barracks...lol. They both take weekly pics to see who's garden is growing faster. If I can be of any help to the newly deployed Mom's, please let me know. I am always here, always bragging about ALL our Military and ALWAYS praying for each and every one of them...until they ALL come home!
