What's a simple eco-friendly habit all families can start?
Taking off your shoes at the door! Shoes track in pesticides, lead, mutagens, allergens, dirt, feces (ew!), and other bacteria. Your key to a cleaner, safer home is to leave the shoes at the door. My trick to get everyone on board at home is to place large decorative "shoe buckets" near each entrance. My kids put their shoes in the shoe bucket when the get home without even thinking about it. Plus, you never hear the question "Mom, where are my sneakers?" ever again.
What would you say to moms who want to be more eco-friendly, but worry it will be more expensive?
Eco-friendly doesn't mean you have to buy a ton of expensive products. It's true safer products and organic food can cost more, but you can find a way to be frugal too. Making your own cleaning products is a HUGE money saver. White vinegar and Baking Soda go a long way. Making your own baby wipes, cloth diapering can ultimately save you money in the long run. Also referencing guides like the Environmental Working Group's Clean 15 list for buying organic produce. Sometimes it's not worth it to buy those organic bananas!
What's one of your favorite eco-friendly brands you've discovered?
There are so many new product lines coming into the market that it's sometimes hard to know what's really safe and what's a load of green-washing and marketing. I have found brands I trust over the years and they include (but are not limited to) Earth Mama Angel Baby, Better Life Cleaning Products, LunchBots, Loving Naturals Sunscreen is a top pick, Bubble & Bee is a long time favorite, Baby Wipe Juice from LuSa Organics, and my new favorite thing are reusable product bags by CareBags. No waste and they keep produce fresh longer. That helps save money when you spend on organic!
