One Of The Funniest Experiences I've Had Traveling With Kids

I have been very fortunate in that both of my daughters were good airplane travelers from the time that they were infants, however, both have been bothered from time to time by ear pain when the plane is descending. On one occasion when my older daughter was about 3 years old we were flying to Prince Edward Island and after an uneventful flight the plane started to descend and Katie's ears started to hurt. My husband and I were both trying to soothe her but she became distraught and, oblivious to the fact that we were still several thousand feet above the ground, started to yell repeatedly "I want off this plane right now"!!! At the time, I was mortified by the disturbance that she was creating but we still have a good laugh about it 11 years later.

A Piece Of Travel Advice For Moms

My one piece of travel advice would be that you should never listen to the naysayers who tell you that it's too hard to travel with kids, that they won't remember it anyway or any other words of wisdom designed to keep you at home. I believe that you can travel just about anywhere with kids provided that you keep the interests and limitations of the children in mind while planning the trip, recognize that flexibility is key because nothing goes according to plan when kids are involved, and realize that you will have to slow down and accept that you won't be able to see or do everything. Travel is a very enriching experience for families and there is a whole world out there to explore. Once you have taken the first step it will just get easier and you will never regret it.

Where I'd Go If I Could Take My Kids Anywhere In The World

That is a very difficult question because the answer is really — "Where wouldn't I take my kids?" We have a long family wish list of places that includes all the big bucket list trips like an African lion safari, a Galapagos Islands cruise and a trip to the pyramids in Egypt. I think if I had to pick just one place, however, that it would be China for my younger daughter. Emma has just turned 8 and I'm not sure where the idea originated but she has been asking to go to China since she was about 3 years old. She wants to see the Great Wall of China, pandas and the Terracotta Warriors. We have been telling her for five years that she isn't old enough yet but she's still hoping that we will go soon so if I could take my kids anywhere in the world then I would pick China just to see the delight on her face knowing that her dream was coming true.
