The Best Part of Living in the San Francisco Bay Area

The multiculturalism. A walk down a Bay Area street is like a trip around the world. I'm proud to be raising my son in a place like that, because he will grow up with a natural level of acceptance of other people and other cultures. It is also a politically fascinating place to live. Before I lived here, I had the assumption that everyone was a far left-wing liberal, but that's so far from the truth. The beauty of the Bay Area is that every single part of the political spectrum is represented (and accepted) here.

My Favorite Kid-friendly Activity in the Bay Area

We are huge fans of the California Academy of Sciences. We go a lot, and my son always finds something new to marvel at. The Bay Area Discovery Museum in Sausalito is also great. There's so, so much hands-on stuff for kids to do, and it's a great way to spend a day as a family.

Some Say It's Hard to Raise a Child in the Bay Area...

It definitely presents its own set of challenges. Schooling, for one. Getting your child into a decent school, even a decent public school, is a huge challenge. And it often comes with a hefty price tag. And, there is always the added danger of being in an urban area. It's hard to find a balance between being a helicopter parent, and being an appropriately worried and cautious urban parent. But, that's not unique to the Bay Area. The benefits of living in this area, where you can be downtown and then on a farm after a short drive, and you can meet insanely interesting people every day, far outweigh the difficulties.
