What All Moms Should Know About Food Allergies
Food allergies have more than just a physical effect on kids. It is so important for parents to maintain, exemplify, and instill a healthy, calm attitude about food and food allergies for their children. This takes patience, preparation, and a lot of discussion. Don't get me wrong, life-threatening food allergies require vigilance. But it also requires an acknowledgement that food allergies don't define your family. And they certainly won't limit you either!
Advice for Moms Who've Just Learned Their Kids Have Food Allergies
First I would say, don't panic. Transitioning to a food allergy-free lifestyle feels like it may be daunting, but with a good system in place it can be easier than you think. And, amazingly, keeping your child safe can be a cinch once you're in practice. Keeping things simple and sane for yourself is essential. It will help you and your child maintain a positive, easy-going attitude about food allergies and the world around them!
First, sign up for food allergy notices/recalls with FAAN. Next, familiarize yourself with labeling regulations and learn how to read labels. This also involves getting to know other names by which your child's allergen may be listed (like, "whey" or "cream" for milk, and "gluten" or "flour" for wheat). Finally, speak to other parents of kids with food allergies. Trade recipes, share tips. We're a talkative, powerful community that want to support and help each other!
