What All Moms Should Know About Food Allergies
I would like all moms to understand that food allergies are very serious and can be life-threatening, but we need compassion more than we need pity. Our daughter is very young, having only just turned three, so I hope that day by day people will learn more about food allergies and have more empathy and understanding of our plight. I also want them to understand, though, that she is, overall, a very happy little girl and there's no need to feel so bad for her. We certainly welcome others to look out for her and have some concern for her well-being, of course, but don't be sad! :)
Advice for Moms Who've Just Learned Their Kids Have Food Allergies
Seek out other moms! It's a great thing to do for any situation in which you find yourself feeling alone, or like you're the only one going through something. You are not alone. You may be the only one on your street, block, or even town, if it's a really small town, but there are millions of other mothers all going through similar trials and tribulations. Find them online, if you can't find any to meet in person! Some are further along the learning curve and can help bring you up to speed. Even if they don't have specific answers for your questions, they can provide an "e-shoulder" to cry on and you will know that others are coping and you can, too. I know how overwhelming it can be, and it might not even fully "hit you", in the beginning. Each new life stage presents new challenges, so it's a continuous learning process for all of us. When it gets to be too much, reaching out to other moms can help put things into perspective. We have so much to learn from each other!
