The Best Part of Living in the San Francisco Bay Area

I hate answering this question for fear that I sound like I'm bragging, but here goes: the crisp, clear light. Easy access to hiking and biking trails. Farmers markets, year round. Tons of performance venues that lure world-class musicians of every stripe to play within an hour of my house. The fact that a "stay-cation" here counts as a desirable "vacation" to everyone else. See? Sounds kind of braggy. So let me just add: earthquakes are bad!

My Favorite Kid-friendly Activity in the Bay Area

As a mom of a teen and a tween, we are slowly transitioning away from the abundance of child-friendly museums (Exploratorium, Habitot, Lawrence Hall of Science) and toward exhibits at art museums like the DeYoung, SFMOMA and the Oakland Museum of Art. But if we have a couple of free hours, our favorite activity is a romp with our dog (and 300 other happy, off-leash pups) at Pt. Isabel in Albany. It sates the kids' desire to turn our house into a dog shelter.

Some Say It's Hard to Raise a Child in the Bay Area...

I think the Bay Area is a fabulous place to raise a child. There are so many ways to broaden a child's horizons here — the "Kid Friendly Activity" section of the newspaper runs for pages. It's hard NOT to find something fun to do on any given day. I also appreciate the fact that my kids are growing up in a community renowned for its acceptance of diversity, and on the cutting edge of environmentally friendly living. They're going to be ambassadors of that sort of compassion and stewardship, wherever they choose to live.
